Virus scam appearing only when on Mumsnet

Just wondering if anyone else has had this?
As in the title I'm getting frequent "warnings", supposedly from McAfee, claiming I've got various viruses and inviting me to click a link (not done of course)

I don't use McAfee anyway and they're not from them - their site has images of a common scam which matches these - but it only happens when I'm clicked onto Mumsnet

Anyone know what's happening by any chance?

Just had the same one after a few days 'off'. Edge on Windows 10. Scrolliing through Last Hour.

IwantToRetire · 18/01/2025 22:04

Just had the fake virus scam page again.

Not sure if it is the same web link, as I cant find the list I started.

Today's was 63btvlfe.mom - and I suspect like the others can be traced back through the whois system to the same company.

Just scrolling through notifiactions.

As before Windows 11, Firefox, McAfee.

Seriously MN - this is now ridiculous.

I spend (to much) time on the internet every day, looking a range of web sites, some of which rely on advertising.

This NEVER happens anywhere else but here.

If an outside company is sending the ads to MN then you need to fire and / or sue them. If it is an internal to MN IT department then they should be asked why they are unable to do what millions of other web support workers do.

ie protect users of a web site from being hijacked by spammers or worse.

I've tried using different browsers @JoMumsnet and the site is virtually unusable as it has happened multiple times this morning. My anti virus blocked a Trojan.

Allergictoironing · 19/01/2025 11:53

Just happened to me too, on the thread about "Devastated DD - awful reference.

I've also noticed a LOT of lagging lately, sometimes freezing Chrome then it shuts down, only when I'm on MN and usually when I'm doing something like trying to post or refresh the screen.

IwantToRetire · 19/01/2025 17:13

This is maybe another glitch, but not sure about starting a new thread.

So I click on a link to a new thread or comment, and the page I am on disappears, but the page the link is to just never appears. And screen refressh doesn't help.

This on top of notification not working properly any more, the whole hijacking by scams, and now this, makes using MN almost an act of endurance.

Try doing a "back", then click back on to the page you want. e.g. I opened a thread at my previous post then clicked on the latest page in the thread. After reading a couple of posts got the blank screen, hit the browser back button then clicked on the relevant page again. Read a few more posts & it went blank again though 🙄

Thank you, @DogInATent - I've just had it again and came back to post the link but you've saved me the bother

And yes, mine's exactly like that too

snap, its driving me bonkers, then the mumsnet page just goes blank....

Thanks - yes, but was really mentioning as it is another everyday web function you wouldn't normally think about.

Its just wearing me down.

Just as the notifications aren't working.

notthe1Parrot · 19/01/2025 20:27

Twice in the last 10 minutes, the second time just a blank page.

pandora206 · 19/01/2025 20:56

McAfee virus scam and blank pages off and on here today too. Using Chrome on PC. Here is the latest image.

Forgot to mention, last time was on Gardening thread Why isn't my Amaryllis flowering?

LavaBum · 19/01/2025 21:26

Happening repeatedly tonight (on multiple pages). Presumably a dodgy add with embedded code is redirecting users to a fake spammy webpage with the 'virus warning' thing. Most recent redirect was blocked by google Chrome automatically. Maybe check the ads (not try to pass the blame to users and their browsers / cookies) as it is coming from the MN site.

it's been months. Do you still not know why this is happening?

Getting this again today.

GCAcademic · 20/01/2025 12:29

I had it again today, but the main issue has been the page going blank on virtually every thread, within a minute of it loading. I've reluctantly turned the ad blocker on and it seems to be doing the trick.

This is happening to me also. I don't want to use an adblocker but, here we are.

FeegleFrenzy · 20/01/2025 15:45

Just had something pop up saying unusual activity detected and I needed to click on “I am not a robot” to proceed. I stupidly clicked on it, then loads of pop ups saying I was infected with a virus and the macafee screen popped up. Really hope I haven’t infected my computer.

On another thread about the freezing that’s what mnhq say to do 🤷‍♀️. I’m sure their advertisers would be delighted

I had this over the weekend and it has just happened again - using Edge on an HP laptop. I can get rid of it by going into my notifications and switching off permissions for those most recently granted (always the spam site/link).

I also use NORD VPN and it has been blocking MN on and off for a week or so now, presumably because it is detecting these threats. It really is getting annoying and is obviously a known issue judging by the number of comments on here.

It's not a real virus, it's a scam trying to trick you into thinking you have one. By clicking on the "I'm not a robot" you inadvertently give the scammer permission to send pop up notifications to your computer.

If you go into your browser settings you can switch the notifications off - this is what I've just had to do as I clicked on the "I'm not a robot" screen too.

IwantToRetire · 20/01/2025 17:43

Have only been on MN for about half an hour and already had too many blank pages after clicking on a link in list of notifications.

And then when trying to start a new thread, so no links to clink on, the page I was typing title into just disappeared and couldn't use back arrow!!

As before Windows 11, Firefox, McAfee

JenniferBooth · 20/01/2025 17:58

Had this last night and today

pointythings · 20/01/2025 19:11

OK, so last night the site was unusable for me. Constant blank screens and virus spam. Today it's fine. The difference? I turned my VPN on.

Badbadbunny · 20/01/2025 19:31

Site has been terrible all day - can't look at a long thread without the screen going blank and the anti-virus warning kicking in. Must be one of the ads that's fake. Going to have to give up on Mnet for a couple of days until they sort it.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 20/01/2025 19:43

and it's back again.
Not being funny but it really shouldn't be this hard to solve. When you looked into it last time, what did you find?
