Virus scam appearing only when on Mumsnet

Just wondering if anyone else has had this?
As in the title I'm getting frequent "warnings", supposedly from McAfee, claiming I've got various viruses and inviting me to click a link (not done of course)

I don't use McAfee anyway and they're not from them - their site has images of a common scam which matches these - but it only happens when I'm clicked onto Mumsnet

Anyone know what's happening by any chance?

Hi there @Puzzledandpissedoff . Could you let us know what device and browser you are using? If you're also able to send us a screenshot of the messages you're seeing, that would also be really helpful. Thank you.

It's a laptop running Chrome, @HebeMumsnet - the messages were closed (obviously!!) so I can't access them now, but will copy them over to you the next time I get one

Thanks, OP. We'll wait to hear from you (and hoping it doesn't popup again).

I've had this three times today.
Chrome on a Windows PC.
It's a redirect to an off-site page, not a pop-up. The first time I though I might have clicked on a side banner advert by mistake. But after the latest two occasions I am sure that this is not the case.

DogInATent · 03/10/2024 16:13

@LilyMumsnet @HebeMumsnet
Here you go... it's really random, maybe around 1 in 20-30 page opens.

Thank you, @DogInATent - I've just had it again and came back to post the link but you've saved me the bother

And yes, mine's exactly like that too

I have also been having these problems but am using Firefox. And it only happens when I am on mumsnet.

It seems to be if accidently I click in the left side of a forum web page where occassionaly ads bleed down.

I have had the McAfee one but also been redirected to web sites like
neetoutoo.com and
connectscreen.xyz

" ... Neetoutoo[.]com is a rogue page that promotes browser notification spam and generates redirects to different (likely unreliable/dangerous) websites. The majority of visitors to neetoutoo[.]com and similar webpages enter them through redirects caused by sites that utilize rogue advertising networks. ... "

Not suggesting that mumsnet is using rogue advertising networks, but this has made using mumsnet very irritating in the last week.

But was going to start a thread about this, but saw this one, so assume it is part of the same.

Cant see from the image but did anyone who has had this made a note of the url / web link when this is displayed?

It's on the image. At the top.

I cant read it!

But am also suggesting that anyone who gets a page like this makes a note of the url so we / MNHQ can see if there is a pattern.

If you can't read it you can't help. But it's there for MNHQ to read and pass to the website minion.

DogInATent · 03/10/2024 19:34

And it's just done it again.
It's definitely not connected to clicking on an advert.
It's the same URL each time.

That's a bit rude! Not everyone has 20/20 vision.

And why wouldn't you want those of us experiencing problems not know if we are having the same web links.

For instance being able to block web sites.

Surprised at such an uncooperative attitude on MN.

ouch321 · 03/10/2024 19:37

I had this yesterday

DogInATent · 03/10/2024 19:37

@IwantToRetire I don't have 20/20 vision. I have to put my glasses on to read the screen. But I can click on the image, it gets bigger, and it gets bigger still when I pinch-zoom. It's also not helpful saying something isn't there when it is.

PandoraSox · 03/10/2024 23:27

I am getting this too intermittently.

Message from Avast is: we prevented your connection to 6linb5yp.buzz because it is a dangerous webpage. Threat category URL:Block [FakeScan].

It is only when I use a desktop and Chrome.

Missingthesea · 03/10/2024 23:39

I keep getting one purporting to be from something called "DDOS-GUARD"; whichever mumsnet page I happen to be reading at the time is redirected to that. It says that suspicious activity has been detected from my network and wants me to click on a link "to prove that you are not the robot". Er, I don't think so. Using Microsoft on a laptop. Only happens on mumsnet, always in the evening so far, for four days.

Yes, only in the evening for me too.

IwantToRetire · 22/10/2024 21:18

Have started to have this problem again.

Did @MNHQ ever find out what was causing this problem on the web site.

Tonight's was so dubious I closed everything as quickly as possible and so didn't note link, but will try and do so if it happens again.

Very disconcerting.

Yes! I just had that about ten minutes ago!
ETA - laptop, microsoft Edge browser

PandoraSox · 22/10/2024 21:59

Yes, I had it again too.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/10/2024 22:00

yes, ive had this a couple of times today too.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 22/10/2024 23:11

Getting this too. Then getting redirected automatically to weird sites.

IwantToRetire · 23/10/2024 01:07

Yes, only seems to happen if I accidently click on the left had ad area.

In fact even just accidently dragging the mouse over to get to list of topics on a forum.

Windows 11, Firefox, McAfee Livesafe.

Not only strange web sites but the back arrow that should take me back to the MN web page I was misdirected from never works.

HebeMumsnet · 23/10/2024 09:28

Morning, everyone. We're still working on this one, but thank you to everyone who has sent in info so far. The info we need at the moment is the following:

  • Device you are on
  • What page were you on?
  • Did you see an ad or click on one? If so can you share the click through URL, or give a description of the ad?

If you're seeing these pop-ups and haven't yet sent us the above info, we'd be really grateful if you could do so next time you see it. Many thanks. Flowers
