Why did the "Lisa Johnson One to Many" thread get deleted?

PermanentIyExhaustedPigeon · 19/03/2024 18:26

I've seen the deletion message but don't understand why the comments that broke talk guidelines couldn't have been deleted and the rest of the thread left to stand.

Lisa Johnson claims that she had it removed because she put pressure on MN to do so.

Can anyone from MNHQ clarify please?

Never heard of her before, but based on this she sounds nuts.

Is that libel?

Check her Facebook posts as she’s kindly detailed the guidelines there 🤔

Hi all. We appreciate the frustration you all feel at this deletion. MNers sharing their good and bad experiences of a business or service is something we know people find very useful (and is of course part of why Mumsnet came about). We won't delete a thread just because a business or individual asks us to, and, when a libel complaint is made, we follow processes in accordance with the Defamation Act, which offers posters the option to stand by their comments or have them removed.

In all things, our Talk guidelines still apply, and, unfortunately, we had justifiable concerns about the thread as it continued, not least due to the amount of sockpuppeting going on. (Meanwhile, posters not actually sockying were accused on the thread). We also felt it ventured beyond constructive criticism and more towards a personal attack as things appeared to escalate on other social media sites.

You're most welcome to share your opinions on Mumsnet provided our Talk guidelines are followed.

If you've any further questions, do let us know.

Who was sockying, just out of interest? Was it by any chance LJ's flying monkeys?

Also, I missed the last page of the thread.

Was there a lot of socking going on? Did another "affiliate" turn up?

Here’s a few facts from me:

FACT : I bought and completed Lisa Johnson’s One to Many course a few years ago.

FACT : I have successfully been in business for 25 years. But I wanted to know more about the online business model. The course was an eye opener for me in many ways. I found the course very valuable.

FACT : I connected with other business people whilst on the course who I still collaborate with today in my businesses.

FACT : Lisa Johnson has successfully launched, sold and delivered her One to Many course many times, most recently earlier this month.

FACT : I can see that there are 1300 people in the Facebook group for the course. Some of those will be Lisa’s team and admins. But the bulk of that number will be attendees.

FACT : promoting a book with incentives is a well trodden path for publishers and authors. Not sure why this is being held up as something underhand.

FACT : the OP on the original thread asked for feedback from anyone who had previously attended Lisa’s One to Many course. Sadly all she got was opinions from people who had never been on the course.

FACT : the comments on the previous thread became unpleasant and personal.

Just a general comment when researching any sort of new business venture in general: anyone telling you they “made” or are a certain amount of money “better off” - be careful, as to me this suggests actual profit, and by profit I mean money in the bank or in your hand AFTER you have paid all your costs. Cross check data to establish if they are talking about sales / turnover. I have seen companies talking about how they “made” £xxxxx when in fact this is turnover and not profit.
You can have a business that turns over millions in sales but that doesn’t mean that’s in the owners pockets and in fact if you’re overheads are high you can still end up with a paltry amount left for the business owner. You’d be surprised at the costs involved in running a business so don’t be mesmerised by big turnover figures as this means nothing if you have just as high operating costs that eat into that delicious big turnover.
There is no such thing as a get rich quick business and sales techniques do WORK so always take time to breath, research and discuss your idea with trusted friends and family. If someone tells you it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
If you can, get a solicitor to review any contracts you are considering getting into.

It could be the best £300 you’ve ever spent. People seem adverse to obtaining independent legal advice but call a few firms and ask if they can help you. Many offer free 30 mins consultation which might be enough for them to cast their expert eye over any documentation you have.
Also, avoid making decisions when you are feeling low or vulnerable. If you look at your life and feel you need to get out of a rut this could potentially place you in a place of vulnerability and more likely to consider making a choice that’s not right for you.
If you really believe you’ve got a business idea that’s got legs, do some market research, is anyone else doing something similar, can you do it better, is there a market for your idea? And if you think so then find a 1:1 coach be that life or business and do a couple of sessions with them - this can cost from £50 per hour upwards and you will know very quickly if that will work for you and stop / change coach etc. Coaching helps the coachee to find clarity and also provides accountability. Alternatively, a business mentor may be the way to go. Speak to your local Council or Business Improvement District who should have contacts and if not seek the help of Mr Google! Starting a business is no mean feat but it’s possible with the right idea, support and mindset and yes, your mindset does play a part in your success because if you don’t have the right mindset you will sabotage your success. But that’s a WHOLE other post. But that’s my two pennys worth on getting into any sort of business, not just signing up to this particular online course but anything from starting a business from scratch to buying a Franchise. And that my friends is probably a whole business mentor session there for free. You’re welcome 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Edited

Just to be clear, in case you’re referring to me, I’m not an affiliate for Lisa. Perhaps I should have put that in as a fact also.

I have attended both her One to Many and her Business Strategist course. And I found both to be useful.

But to be absolutely clear - I am not an affiliate.

as things appeared to escalate on other social media sites.

By which you mean, as Lisa Johnson posted about the Mumsnet thread in her own Facebook group. Where she called Mumsnet a "gossip site" frequented by "lowlifes".

That's a fact, by the way.

She also said she was going to ask Mumsnet to hand over the email addresses and names of people who had posted on the thread. I called that sinister, some people may agree with me.

Anyway, here we are now, let's try and not get this one deleted!

Geebray · 20/03/2024 13:45

Great summation, @GiddyGoldHam!! 👏

GiddyGoldHam · 20/03/2024 13:45

@TheShellBeach

"promoting a book with incentives is a well trodden path for publishers and authors. Not sure why this is being held up as something underhand"

Can you honestly, hand on heart (without lying to yourself) say you think that giving away something that would normally cost £10k if you buy £4k's worth of books so the book climbs the charts in a specific week (if you pre-ordered the following week you didn't get the incentives because manipulating the sales within a specific time frame was key to climbing the charts) is acting with integrity? Would you not agree that if someone says over and over and over again that they only act with integrity that they wouldn't try and influence the sales in such an extreme way

Why not just do it out in the open if it's so above board, rather than start a private FB group for it?

I'd love you to point me to some other examples of best sellers who are openly doing this. And I don't mean being entered for a prize if you pre-order. I mean literally giving away huge amounts.

Out of interest what do you think about her calling people on the thread lowlifes?
And saying that one person recommending a man was sexist?

I do agree that some comments were unpleasant and personal and I don't condone those comments. But accusing someone of being sexist and calling people lowlifes is also unpleasant.

GiddyGoldHam · 20/03/2024 13:50

Whoops apologies @TheShellBeach! That was meant for @BeMorePositive

Geebray · 20/03/2024 13:51

Oh yes that's right, we were sexist as well because we dared to recommend a man - Daniel Priestley. I had heard him that morning on Steve Bartlett's Diary Of A CEO podcast, where he was full of useful, actionable business and strategy advice.

Also I recommended Noah Kagan's book, Million Dollar Weekend.

"I can see that there are 1300 people in the Facebook group for the course. Some of those will be Lisa’s team and admins. But the bulk of that number will be attendees."

Is from the year that you attended? Or do the cohorts from different years all get added to the same group?

@BeMorePositive this part isn’t true

”FACT : the OP on the original thread asked for feedback from anyone who had previously attended Lisa’s One to Many course. Sadly all she got was opinions from people who had never been on the course.”

There were posters who had done the course on the thread and who shared some of their experience and opinion.

There was also at least one previous student of the course who specifically said they weren’t willing to comment publicly on pros and cons due to possible repercussions.

Which is very understandable going by subsequent activity from LJ to obtain poster names and emails in order to take legal action against them.
