Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

Maybe they are using the app and having to read a line at a time.

🤣🤣 maybe they got distracted by the gambling ads

JaneJeffer · 03/04/2024 16:25

They’re all trying to win their money back.

My daily average time on Mumsnet is way down. Result.

God the Monopoly one is getting right on my nerves

Yup. Back for me today, any time I'm on the app. (Like others, I've really limited my time here, which is no bad thing!)

It's really making me nauseous ... I can't imagine how it might make someone with vision issues feel.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/04/2024 18:01

there's quite a bit to so please bear with us

Really? Look I know this isn't the only thing MNHQ have to deal with.

But the feedback has been clear, from all posters. The positioning of the ads makes the app unusable, especially the banner one at the top. The ads themselves are really odd - gambling ads, ads written in different languages / alphabets, illegible on the app. The scrolling ads are particularly problematic.

The app itself is glitchy & drains phone batteries.

You know what the issues are. It seems you don't want to or are unable to address them 🤷🏻‍♀️

RainbowConnection1 · 03/04/2024 18:14

That Monopoly advert is making my eyes go funny!

Also not sure why gambling ads are deemed to be suitable, especially when MN has its share of active addicts and those recovering, or the women who are living with men with gambling problems.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/04/2024 18:14

Oh God this is new fresh hell ... a slot-machine type ad, with whirring images flying down.

The screen is utterly unreadable.

And yes, more gambling.

Come on MN. Do better. It's so rubbishy & tacky, in addition to be totally unusable.

@JoMumsnet @BeckyAMumsnet @LilyMumsnet what is going on? Are you ever going to get back to us about this?

There was a member whose husband killed himself because of gambling. I mentioned Luke's Law (her subsequent campaign) upthread.

Here are the ads I'm currently seeing. On every thread.

Write to Justine Roberts CEO of mumsnet, link her to this thread, if enough people do that then perhaps something will be done.

JaneJeffer · 04/04/2024 12:42

Competition time - which is worse A: Mumsnet mobile site or B: Gransnet mobile site?

The correct answer is C: The App

This definitely shouldn't be happening and we are doing our best to get this resolved. These adverts can sometimes sneak past blocks by hiding themselves - that's why it's really useful to have URLs.

If you see these again, please could you click on the advert and copy the URL address it takes you to? You can turn wifi and data off when you click, meaning the link will load but the page won't actually open.

JaneJeffer · 04/04/2024 13:07

@LilyMumsnet if you click on the Monopoly ad it takes you to the App Store same for that slot machine thing.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/04/2024 13:22

Same for me it redirects to the App Store

Same here. Mine have all been gambling ones for the last week at least. I've never been on a gambling site / had a gambling app. It feels really off brand for MN.

JaneJeffer · 04/04/2024 14:26

I don't understand why MN can't click it themselves and find the source if they don't know where it came from! Why is it up to app users to do it?

MaggieFS · 04/04/2024 20:04

You could resolve it by just removing the ad banner space and putting the app back to how it was!

EarringsandLipstick · 04/04/2024 23:27

@LilyMumsnet

With all due respect, you can't expect posters to do the work for you.

You can yourself log into MN app & see these! We're not seeing anything that you are not.

I am afraid I cannot really believe that you are unaware of these ads, and I can't also believe they are just accidental & sneaking through!

There must be a mechanism whereby you facilitate these ads?

And apart from the content, there's the design, totally non-user friendly, which you've ignored. 🫤

whatsitcalledwhen · 05/04/2024 12:06

Surely if all of us are seeing gambling ads then if MNHQ use the app they will also see them? It isn't a case of the odd rogue one slipping through the net it seems, multiple users are getting them and them only.

My current “view” on the mobile site which would appear to be as compromised as the app Angry Both moving.

Note the amount of space left to actually see the discussion ConfusedHmm

And no, I’m not going to click through to get the web addresses for you: I’m not going to a) give them the traffic and b) more importantly encourage the algorithms that would generate even more gambling ads on all my web browsing ShockHmm

As many of us have repeated ad nauseum , we understand the need for advertising and do not object to it per se. It is the sheer quantity and space that it is now taking up - which is not, repeat NOT in line with other similar sites (at least, none that we can identify: like X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Messenger, Reddit, Nextdoor Confused) as well as the content of the ads (in particular gambling) that we object to.

Of course they will!

Not meaning any one individual but MN is ridiculously amateurish.

RainbowConnection1 · 05/04/2024 16:08

This was my view earlier today.

A lot of the adverts are in dollars too, not at all relevant.

Tarkan · 05/04/2024 23:05

As others have said I just get taken to the App Store. This is what I see and what it takes me to.
