Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

Same here. It's been a week now and they haven't even properly understood the issues. I will get a lot of time back in my life!

theatremachine · 26/03/2024 16:48

My phone overheated earlier and wouldn't charge. Checking the apps I had open, Mumsnet was draining 27% of my battery. The nearest to it was WhatsApp with 7%.

Once I force closed the app, my battery charged normally. Just a tip for anyone who's running the app in the background.

Thanks, everyone for sharing your feedback. We realise that the introduction of banner ads has caused a fair bit of frustration and we will give your comments here due consideration. The ads you’re seeing are a standard format commonly used across the internet and in line with the set-up of the site. However, if there is a particular ad that is causing problems for you, please do let us know, preferably with a screen recording so that we can quickly locate it.

They need to go. Its putting us all off. Standard or not. It is physically painful for my eyes and head.

Tarkan · 26/03/2024 17:59

For those having battery draining issues. It's been something that's been going on for months. Mine is ok right now but it seems to be an on and off thing for many people.

Ditto.

I'll not be scrolling MN on my phone from now on. My phone got incredibly hot and battery ran right down.

The fact the ad space is fixed at the top. It's taking up space, as above, but is also right in the key eyeline permanently.

Worse than being right at the top, it's between the top bar and the posts. I've accidentally clicked an ad (once a gambling Install buttonHmm) when going for flip screen, filter or back arrow.

Very good points. Thjs is it exactly.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/03/2024 21:09

@prettybird

Agreed! Today I just checked on the desktop version (till now!) which is probably a lot better for me, but as you say, presumably not good news for MN, that so many of us will no longer engage as much.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/03/2024 22:02

@BeckyAMumsnet

Look at this.

Another example of the ridiculous amount of actual text / posts that remains, with banner & inserted ads. Just stupid.

Any updates on this?

HumerousHumous · 27/03/2024 19:16

Yes, MN please...every time I reopen the app, it crashes....
The banner ad is horrid. Can just about cope with the mid thread ads but these are awful. Please get rid of them.

JaneJeffer · 28/03/2024 01:57

Ugh it's giving me motion sickness trying to read with that thing constantly moving. I am going to send you a screen recording by email @BeckyAMumsnet seeing as we can't post them here (or do anything much)

WobblyLondoner · 28/03/2024 08:05

I’ve tried deleting the app and just using the web version on my phone (which is where I mainly use mumsnet). But that isn’t much better (in fact the ads are even more prominent). It’s definitely affecting how long I am on Mumsnet - no bad thing I suppose but not really what Mumsnet want I suspect.

EarringsandLipstick · 28/03/2024 08:09

Clearly MN don't care at all though! Their response on this thread has been truly awful.

JaneJeffer · 28/03/2024 10:08

Seems they don't reply to emails now either

AllLopsided · 28/03/2024 22:43

I stupidly upgraded the app a few days after I read this post and made a note never to upgrade again HmmShock

With the ad at the top and the ads midway through, in landscape mode more than half the screen is ads.

I agree the one at the top is especially annoying because it acts like a barrier to the rest of the page. I have arm ache from trying to get the post content at eye level on my iPad. Most people read what's at the top of the page and scroll to bring what's lower down the page nearer the top. @BeckyAMumsnet do you not want users to read any content at all? Kind of eliminates the point of a chat site, no?

AllLopsided · 28/03/2024 22:59

In fact in that unintentionally apt example that I just posted, there are only three - THREE!!! lines of text visible! Come on Mumsnet, is this really the experience you want to give users?

JaneJeffer · 28/03/2024 23:37

FUCK OFF MONOPOLY I HATE YOU

JaneJeffer · 29/03/2024 00:58

Yeah I'm definitely going to purchase this

EarringsandLipstick · 29/03/2024 11:52

😂 @JaneJeffer

I've got similar ads too!

Did @mnhq ever reply to your email?

auspreg · 29/03/2024 12:38

Just want to also say that I will be deleting mumsnet as I simply cannot use the app with this fucking awful banner at the top flashing at me all the time. It's literally giving me migraines! Literally! I have NEVER seen an app/website do this before. I have been on mumsnet for at least 10 years, read it pretty much daily. Every day for 10 years...and you're losing me now 🤷🏻‍♀️ fucking shameful to be honest mumsnet. I'm actually gutted. Feel like I'll be grieving a friend. Mental isn't it? But that's simply the consequence of this stupid fucking flashing annoying constant banner ad.

You should be ashamed.

AllLopsided · 29/03/2024 12:43

So far I only have the MN ads, so I'm grateful that nothing's moving.

Your reply further down about the ad at the top being in line with other social media apps is an out-and-out-lie.

Facebook and messenger don't have them.
Instagram doesn't have them,
Reddit doesn't have them.
X doesn't have them.

Incidentally many games don't have them either.

So which relevant apps do have them?

Also the amount of content visible in landscape mode is clearly much poorer than in portrait mode, so once again landscape readers have been forgotten about/ignored.

I am in actual pain from using MN now, in places I don't usually have pain. My neck hurts because I have to bend my head unnaturally low to read. And my shoulder hurts from trying to avoid this by holding the iPad higher. I've taken some oxycodone so maybe the ads will bother me less soon.

Do you you enjoy making your users feel dreadful?

JaneJeffer · 29/03/2024 12:45

Not a peep out of them @EarringsandLipstick maybe watching my video knocked them sick 🤷🏻‍♀️

AllLopsided · 29/03/2024 12:45

@auspreg me too - I've also been here nearly every day for 10 years.

Sad about it but I'm in so much pain already, I can't afford to add any more.

JaneJeffer · 29/03/2024 12:47

The mobile site isn't much better. It's full of ads like the one below and messages of all sorts.

ProudHag · 29/03/2024 17:14

The flashing makes me nauseous so I'm deleting the app now. I hate a flounce but @mnhq should know this is directly contributing to app deletions, and the UX on the mobile webpage is so poor it'll definitely reduce my visits
