UPDATE FROM MNHQ - New OP view

LilyMumsnet · 02/11/2023 10:34

Hi all,

We're currently testing a new topic page layout called ‘OP view’. You may have noticed it already if you've been on the Gardening topic page in the last month. The aim is to make it easier for users to understand what a thread is about.

Today, we're making ’OP view’ available on Property/DIY, Telly Addicts, The Doghouse, Food/Recipes, Housekeeping and Home decoration. This change will only be on mobile and desktop, OP view is currently not available in the apps.

From initial feedback, you told us that you'd like to be able to switch between OP and classic view. You'll still be able to do this by using the icon on the page, but now you can also choose a default view in your Talk settings.

We appreciate your feedback so feel free to add it to this thread.

I really don’t like it. As pp have said, it doesn’t give enough info to get a feel for the thread and it just looks so messy on a mobile.

Also, I get about 10 threads, then trending topics appears, then a few more threads then shopping appears, then more threads. Way too confusing.

Absolutely this ⬆️

I downloaded the app once years ago but didn’t like it and added nothing to the MN experience so always just go on the web on my mobile. Never ever had the urge to retry.

Same! Didn't like it at all

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2023 16:09

The app is way handier. Mobile site is so clunky.

Not sure how the app is much handier you can't do anything on it.

I don't find the site clunky at all on a phone using the web browser no more of less so than many other websites and at least it has the quote feature!

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2023 16:13

The app has the quote feature!

See!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/11/2023 16:13

Agreed. I've installed and deleted the app twice now over the years because I find it not worth the bother. You can't see all the OP's posts, or couldn't when I last had it.

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2023 16:14

I don't think ye were using the MN app Confused

YourNameGoesHere · 04/11/2023 16:18

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2023 16:13

See!

I honestly didn't think it did so that's nice for those who use it. Honestly I'm surprised to learn to does as literally everytime MNHQ release a new feature it's not available on the app. At least those using it have that as a feature they don't seem to get any of the others.

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2023 16:21

It doesn't have gifs or PMs which is annoying but you can see all the OP posts

HappiestSleeping · 04/11/2023 16:30

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2023 16:13

The app has the quote feature!

So does the Web page on a mobile device. I'm using it now.

Or did you mean that the app didn't previously have the quote feature?

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 04/11/2023 16:34

This is ugly and unwanted. I've turned it off.

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2023 16:48

@HappiestSleeping I was replying to @YourNameGoesHere at least it has the quote feature!

EarringsandLipstick · 04/11/2023 16:49

Not sure how the app is much handier you can't do anything on it.

It's true you don't have a lot of the features on the app. For example, you can't quote quoted posts (ie you can quote once only), can't 'thank' people, or edit.

However other than the edit feature, there's not much I can't do that I don't care about.

I find it handy. I only occasionally use the desktop version, largely because I would be worried I'd make it a habit & go off down MN rabbit holes in work time!

EasternStandard · 04/11/2023 17:46

It’s not a great user friendly format

TyneTeas · 04/11/2023 17:56

On the one hand it is useful to get a bit more of an idea about what a thread is about than just from the title (esp when titles are vague) however it does make it harder to avoid reading the OPs if thread which you know you would want to avoid by the title, so on balance I think I would prefer to remain as is

HyggeTygge · 04/11/2023 21:31

A large proportion of OPs begin "So, NC for this but longtime poster. Sorry for long post, didn't want to dripfeed...."

Danceswithweasels · 04/11/2023 21:46

Awful. On a Fire tablet you can see one thread, or one huge advert, so loads and loads and loads and loads of scrolling. I got the rage trying to look for something on telly addicts and came on here to see if I could find out why everything has been messed up. I have enough rage inducing aspects in life atm without mumsnet adding to them.

It would be hilarious if everyone on MN rebelled and made a pact that we’d start every single thread like that going forward. So that’s all anyone would ever see on the preview of all threads.Grin

SoupDragon · 04/11/2023 23:17

JaneJeffer · 04/11/2023 16:13

See!

But does it show that there is more than one quote in the post?

SwedishEdith · 05/11/2023 09:40

Have just found this thread as have been pissed off about the changes to the DIY and home decor topics. I want to see, at a glance, what people are talking about. It looks like a newspaper sidebar now (presumably so it's easier to see product placement posts by advertisers?). Not an improvement for the user.

And I use the mobile version on my phone as well. Would also be too embarrassed at the app showing on my phone screen 😁

Seeline · 05/11/2023 10:42

I suspect most of those happy to use the app are ios users. The android version is even more useless.

Ironic isn't it? Since Android is a more popular operating system, it is odd that the developers focus on the less popular ios. Talk about own goal.

solvendie · 05/11/2023 17:29

I really don’t like it. I like to scan post titles and click on the ones that interest me. I can switch back quickly if I don’t like the post

Oh, I do like a MN campaign. I'm the only one still putting the checkout divider up and down instead of across.
