UPDATE FROM MNHQ - New OP view

LilyMumsnet · 02/11/2023 10:34

Hi all,

We're currently testing a new topic page layout called ‘OP view’. You may have noticed it already if you've been on the Gardening topic page in the last month. The aim is to make it easier for users to understand what a thread is about.

Today, we're making ’OP view’ available on Property/DIY, Telly Addicts, The Doghouse, Food/Recipes, Housekeeping and Home decoration. This change will only be on mobile and desktop, OP view is currently not available in the apps.

From initial feedback, you told us that you'd like to be able to switch between OP and classic view. You'll still be able to do this by using the icon on the page, but now you can also choose a default view in your Talk settings.

We appreciate your feedback so feel free to add it to this thread.

I'm on mobile. Looks fine to me. Bit more clunky obviously but it gives you more of an idea of what the thread is about.

Are you sure you want that? It's probably going to reduce clicks if people don't have to go to a thread to see what it's about 😁

NotLactoseFree · 02/11/2023 11:16

It opens in a new window when I click on a thread? Extremely annoying. I could land up with loads of MN tabs.

AriannasGuitarCase · 02/11/2023 11:19

Sounds good in theory but it seems to take up a lot of room. Not sure it's a good idea for Telly addicts as you would have to rely on posters not putting spoilers at the start of their post

JaneJeffer · 02/11/2023 11:20

Thanks @Legomania

Seems pointless and a waste of time when you could have been getting the app up to speed instead @LilyMumsnet

TeenDivided · 02/11/2023 11:12

The best way for people to know what a thread is about is to have a sensible title. If people choose to put a meaningless vague title and then people don't bother to click on it, that's their lookout.

I don't like change. I would select not to have this new feature.

This.
Seems a bit weird, who asked for this? Anything that opens a new tab is instantly irritating.

SoupDragon · 02/11/2023 11:27

you can also choose a default view in your Talk settings.

Immediately turned it off here!!

SirChenjins · 02/11/2023 11:27

What was the reason for the change? It worked just fine before (although it was much better before you made all those changes a while back)

Bobbotgegrinch · 02/11/2023 11:31

Well, that's proper fugly isn't it?

Reddit did something similar about 5 years ago and still have the majority of users using the old version. I imagine this will have about the same uptake.

So glad you've been working on this rather than fixing the positioning of the bloody quote button!

Dumbocracy · 02/11/2023 11:33

I don't like it. It's a recipe for even more RSI because you have to scroll all the more to see as many subjects as usual. Or it's a recipe for people not spending so much time on MN and going elsewhere.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/11/2023 11:34

Awful, sorry. Looking on laptop and much prefer how it was. Seems a pointless change.

MissChanandlerB0NG · 02/11/2023 11:35

Ah, I'm not sure. It's very spaced out. I prefer the usual version

BirthdayFlower · 02/11/2023 11:36

I like it but it would be better if images weren't included.

haggisaggis · 02/11/2023 11:37

Yep it's horrible. I immediately turned it off in settings too.

Me too.

tattygrl · 02/11/2023 11:39

I don't like that it opens the thread you click on in a new tab. If I want to open in a new tab I'll choose to (ctrl+click or right click and select Open In New Tab). Really hate when it automatically does it because it clutters up my tab bar or whatever it's called.

Scampuss · 02/11/2023 11:44

Oh goodness, that is awful!

Very pleased we can turn it off.

FictionalCharacter · 02/11/2023 11:48

Legomania · 02/11/2023 10:57

The new view shows the first line of the op (I didn't get it instantly because to me op is original poster not original post)

But the title is also MASSIVE

Ah I see.
I don’t like this @LilyMumsnet . I like to scroll quickly through the titles because I only ever want to read a few. So I like a compact view with each title clearly defined, as in the current view. I find the really large text for the title, with the first line of the OP in normal text, much more difficult to read.

Uniquuue · 02/11/2023 11:50

Crazy that the app hasn't changed. Who uses a desktop to mumsnet? Total waste of time unless we can all access it.

Me. I use a desktop. Smile
and on my phone I use normal browser, not an app.

Ducksinthebath · 02/11/2023 11:55

Do not like one bit.

SoftKittyBazinga · 02/11/2023 11:57

The new tab thing is really irritating.

it shows just a chunk of the first post which I guess could be useful sometimes, but not always. How does it work if there is content some may want to avoid and the post is just there. Even if the title has a warning then people may still see content they prefer not to.

i just can’t see it being used widely and like others I think there are other features that need to be finessed and rolled out on all platforms before you tinker like this.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 02/11/2023 12:00

I wondered what at happened when I went to browse on Housekeeping. It's horrible, I don't like it, I like to scroll through the titles.

I access Mumsnet on my smartphone using Chrome, not on the app.

Off to turn it off now!

Ditto.

PuppyMonkey · 02/11/2023 12:05

Just had a quick look and I’m sorry to disappoint everyone on this thread but I think it’s okay. Grin

Seeline · 02/11/2023 12:10

Just why?!

The whole point of looking at an individual board is to have a quick glance down the list of threads to see if the title is relevant to you. Now using the mobile site you can see three threads and so little of the first post as to make it completely pointless!

If people can't make the title of their thread helpful that's their problem.

Now I need to work out how to turn it off.
