UPDATE FROM MNHQ - New OP view

LilyMumsnet · 02/11/2023 10:34

Hi all,

We're currently testing a new topic page layout called ‘OP view’. You may have noticed it already if you've been on the Gardening topic page in the last month. The aim is to make it easier for users to understand what a thread is about.

Today, we're making ’OP view’ available on Property/DIY, Telly Addicts, The Doghouse, Food/Recipes, Housekeeping and Home decoration. This change will only be on mobile and desktop, OP view is currently not available in the apps.

From initial feedback, you told us that you'd like to be able to switch between OP and classic view. You'll still be able to do this by using the icon on the page, but now you can also choose a default view in your Talk settings.

We appreciate your feedback so feel free to add it to this thread.

I wondered why the Property/DIY section looked shit! It's very A-level IT project looking. Hardly any titles fit on the page, not a good change.

Munchyseeds2 · 03/11/2023 16:04

I thought there was something wrong
Don't like it at all

That makes sense for the OP view, much as I dislike it.

I don't follow how the quote/reply would make a difference here? Can you explain?

I don't know, I'm afraid - just that I assume there is some commercial thinking behind this. Or just simply that they want to provide the quote function but prefer it used in moderation

BertieBotts · 03/11/2023 18:01

Ah it could be the moderation thing - just from memory, the add message/reply to thread shortcut has always been there throughout previous MN layouts, which might be why they are keen on keeping it.

The quote feature when it was new was a little controversial because people said it would make threads really cluttered and messy.

However I do think most people have got used to this now, so the moderation part isn't really necesssary any more, and it's probably just the wording "reply" which is confusing people.

TreesAtSea · 03/11/2023 18:51

I wondered why things were appearing differently on some threads. Really don't like the OP view: I want to see as quickly as possible what threads are available. I've already changed it back in settings.

SeththeSloth · 03/11/2023 23:24

The font is massive - much prefer the original version.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 04/11/2023 06:57

Dreadful. What on earth is the point? It’s so irritating.

Summerbay23 · 04/11/2023 08:34

Hate it. Prefer the regular/old style view.

HappiestSleeping · 04/11/2023 08:34

Does anyone know if there is a way of making the view default to compact view? The OP view is awful.

Yes it's an option in settings, thank goodness.

Found it. Thank you. I had looked, but obviously not hard enough 🤦‍♂️

catsanddogsandrabbits · 04/11/2023 08:42

Hate it - too cluttered, adds nothing, much easier to scroll and select in original view.

You're welcome and don't worry they don't exactly make it easy to track down. Enjoy the compact view!

StarlightLime · 04/11/2023 08:46

It's awful. And fairly pointless, tbh.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2023 08:46

Is this something people wanted and something that they like?

No and no.

But apparently that doesn't stop them implementing such crap. It's amazing how long it took to get the edit feature despite about a decade of repeated requests and yet stuff no one wanted or asked for such as this, suggested threads and my view get implemented in quick succession.

That's what I thought. I will admit I've not read every post on this thread but I don't think I've seen anyone say they think it's great and really useful.

rainbowstardrops · 04/11/2023 09:47

Nothing ever works on the app. In this day and age where probably most people are using the app on a tablet or smartphone, i can't understand why everything is always rolled out for desktop.*

Quite. It's ridiculous.

Why would anyone use anything other than desktop on a tablet? I honestly can't imagine bothering with an app when the website works perfectly on a tablet. I only use the website on my phone too

I mean, if you have an app it should work, obviously, but I don't see the point of the app at all really.

HyggeTygge · 04/11/2023 10:05

I agree @SoupDragon , I've been using the mobile desktop for years and it always works fine.

EversoDisorganised · 04/11/2023 10:33

I agree too, mobile site on phone, desktop on tablet, both work perfectly. I probably wouldn't switch to the app even if it was any good. But nowadays there is an expectation of a decent app.

ShirleyPhallus · 04/11/2023 10:38

I’d be really embarrassed to have the MN app on my phone!

almondseagull · 04/11/2023 10:40

Mobile site on android here

Tried the ap once, it was awful

Why? 🧐

I use the app. I really only go on MN as part of moments of downtime or when I'm procrastinating and that's usually when I'm waiting for kids in the car, or taking a break during the day, hence using my phone.

PuppyMonkey · 04/11/2023 13:18

I downloaded the app once years ago but didn’t like it and added nothing to the MN experience so always just go on the web on my mobile. Never ever had the urge to retry.
