"boomer" thread

You've hidden this evening's offensive, ageist thread, stereotyping "boomers". Will this be deleted? Can we have a robust response to ageism on MN?

Senior citizen, pensioner, whatever, some of you are determined to be offended. Should I have asked for his birth certificate. We were comforting a distressed child in the cinema who had spilt a little popcorn which we attempted to pick up in the dark he wasn't running up and down the aisles.

Why did you feel the need to specify his age?

If he'd been black, would you have said so?

justasking111 · 01/09/2023 18:26

I speak as a boomer, senior citizen and pensioner 😂😂

Boomer, Karen, snowflakes, geek , nerd, etc. they're all used to create offence

Was this you? @justasking111 ?

I would have questioned why there was the need to specify age at all. As I frequently do.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 01/09/2023 18:37

"they want to be on love island, want to live like the Kardashians. They want holidays abroad, new cars, grey houses, and are angry that they can't have it"

@justasking111 this is you, the other day, being pretty offensive, derogatory and g'wan, ageist, about young people. (see @traytablestowed I'm on it)

Is there a particular age group you don't feel the need to denigrate or do you hate everyone equally?

traytablestowed · 01/09/2023 18:40

@TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon so just to be clear - it is ageist to make any reference to someone's age at all? Even on an individual level?

The post you've quoted here:

"they want to be on love island, want to live like the Kardashians. They want holidays abroad, new cars, grey houses, and are angry that they can't have it"

is a bit different, as it is presumably referring to a group as a whole ("young" people), which is not the same as writing about a single "old" man in the cinema.

When it's irrelevant to the context, of course it is.

Pp's second example I'd say is arguably worse, as she's generalising and denigrating an entire generation. So, by definition, she's lying isn't she? She's using her own opinion to try and convince the rest of us that her opinion, is fact. Ergo a liar. Objectively and empirically. (she's also mighty confused as half her posts are supporting the idea that ageism is wrong, and the other half are, well, ageist)

The man in the cinema was "old" But what does his age have to do with him being obnoxious? Do you ever see "there was this horrible young bloke in the cinema" No. You see "horrible bloke". Except when they're old. Then they're fair game.

justasking111 · 01/09/2023 18:57

When folks start bragging that they're stalking threads looking for something to report then I think mmm. That's just weird.

I'd argue so is @Maireas - a PP here quoted an ageist post she had made against young people, I saw it before it was abruptly deleted (presumably because one of you reported it). I'm not trying to demonise any one individual, but it seems like it's ok for people to have made ageist comments in the past so long as those ageist people are your allies? Otherwise it is apparently unforgivable? Nobody is perfect.

"The man in the cinema was "old" But what does his age have to do with him being obnoxious? Do you ever see "there was this horrible young bloke in the cinema" "

No, I admit I have never seen this. I have definitely though seen people talk about horrible young women though, especially on MN - so maybe age isn't the primary driving factor?

I was quoting you from this thread and asking for clarification.

(Edited to add: I haven't stalked you on any other thread. I just remembered you being supportive of our fight against casual and not so casual ageism, then seeing your posts from today, thought I'd got you mixed up with someone else, so I went back and looked)

But that's it, isn't it? Age is absolutely the driving factor. And that's why it needs challenging. Every single time.

I often open threads from the title of which I can see the poster is going to get a mauling. Usually "young" mothers and often with poor spelling. I report all the inevitable attacks on those as well.

In fact, I've just reported one. Someone posting just to correct the posters' English.

Maireas · 01/09/2023 19:33

No, @traytablestowed . I did not make an ageist post. Not at all.
That was about teenagers who, during the pandemic had not been supervised properly. Some had become feral. Not all.
Please, check your facts.

Bloody hell. Someone (mis)quoting me from an old thread - completely out of context.....this is really silly.
No-one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Is it possible to move forward? It's a pipe dream, maybe....

That one's all over every pension thread.
Chip's mighty heavy on those young shoulders.

Since it needs challenging Every Single Time, you will presumably appreciate me challenging your reference to this other posters age?

@Maireas I'm sorry for dragging your previous post into it. It wasn't a personal attack. I just wanted to point out the disparity between the way it is apparently acceptable to some in this group to trawl through a poster's history in the case when they have dared to refer to a citizen who is senior as a "senior citizen", but also fine to turn a blind eye to other post history as/when it suits the argument in hand.
As you and I both said, nobody is perfect.

Maireas · 01/09/2023 20:26

@traytablestowed apology accepted.
I have never trawled through anyone's posting history. It's just ludicrous - that quote from me, which was years old and totally out of context was used to accuse me of ageism!
It's bonkers! Do you think it's the blue moon?

That was sarcasm.

If you follow through the quote, you'll see I was talking about one of the most ageist posters on MN.

I'd probably go as far as to call them a eugenicist with some of the disgusting things they post.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 01/09/2023 20:39

Do feel free though to find ANY ageist (or any other -ism) post of mine anywhere on MN. I give you permission to copy them word for word onto this thread if you find any.

Maireas · 01/09/2023 20:42

Confession: a few years ago, on a thread about cats, I did refer to my neighbour's cat as a bastard. I am not anti cat. It really is a bastard and shits all over the lawn. No judgement, please.

OP posts:
TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 01/09/2023 20:42

And I didn't "trawl through" @justasking111 's history.

As I said, I remembered her being anti-ageist earlier in the thread, so was a little surprised to see that in the space of a few days she's clearly changed her mind.

That's true of you though as well, isn't it? @traytablestowed

You tried a "gotcha" on me earlier today, accusing me of ageism. And you've just tried it again.

Word to the not-so-wise. You won't. Get me.

You are talking about posterz looking at posts a poster has made on the thread and looking back through posts from years ago

You are conflating the two but are they even the same?

Unless it's a pedigree it's quite likely to be a bastard tbf so seems a reasonable assumption to make

Tom cats tend to be absent fathers not even paying the CMS (continous mouse supply) and female cats are pretty good at LTB's

You trawled though the other poster's history, announcing to the world that her baby couldn't be a lockdown baby as she had written on some other thread that she had a 4 month old and a 4 year old (or whatever - honestly I don't care) GOTCHA! I thought it was a low blow for someone seemingly determined to take the high ground in every way possible. I also saw your post talking about the national service thread earlier today, where you mentioned "Finn and Amelia". I wondered why you didn't just say "children"? It came across with an undertone of judgement for the parents opposing the idea, but who am I to say? That was just the impression I got.
I have literally no idea how to view a posters history, and even if I did, I wouldn't bother with it. I take people for who they are in my interactions with them. My interactions with you haven't been great in all honesty.
