You've hidden this evening's offensive, ageist thread, stereotyping "boomers". Will this be deleted? Can we have a robust response to ageism on MN?

I'm always challenging the stereotypes about millennials on here.
And men/children/gays/people of colour/migrants, whatever.
I refer you to @TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon and the notion of challenging prejudice and discrimination.

Did I say you weren’t?

"look forward to you + ING"

Phrasal verb to indicate you'd like something to happen which doesn't already.

Yes, I think you rather did say she wasn't. No?

Why is somebody calling something frumpy on style and beauty more harmful than calling small children feral? I’m just trying to understand where you draw the line of offence in your mind, or whether it’s ring fenced to unflattering comments about age because that’s what you take the most personally.

It isn't.
And we don't.
Today, I've reported one person talking about women in the Caribbean being fat. One about British kids being so "backward" they can't use cutlery, one anti-vax astroturfer.

Oh FFS.

If you want to have a look at my posting history you will see that I call out a lot of things. Ableism, racism, benefit bashers etc. etc.

If I want to particularly focus on ageism for a while, I can. I don't have to justify it to anyone.

jeffgoldblum · 31/08/2023 15:56

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure this is what is referred to as derailing and whataboutery!

sunglassesonthetable · 31/08/2023 15:59

oh give it rest jammy . You got butt hurt on this thread with The Slug or whatever that poster was called and now you're just spoiling for a fight.

And you never did answer, did you or any of your birthing mates or their newborns manage to avoid catching Covid in hospital?

You know, a coincidental benefit?

Yeah. Probably best not to bite.

I feel that jamtartforme doesn't like the idea of us working together to combat ageism on MN and wants to turn it into yet another negative against us.

Won't wash.

And she's derailing in an attempt to move away from the original thread focus. Much the same as you-know-who did before.

I'm not having anything to do with it.

BellaBellla · 31/08/2023 16:37

Ignore her, she's been spewing ageist hate on here a long time.

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/08/2023 16:46

Jamtartforme · 31/08/2023 15:37

Do you think the threads making sweeping generalisations about men are prejudiced?

Yes.

VimtoVimto · 31/08/2023 17:25

Jamtartforme · 31/08/2023 15:27

Ah, ok. So no more ‘badly behaved children’ thread, no more ‘the problem with men’ threads, no more ‘bloody politicians’ type threads, no more ‘school gate mums’ threads?

The difference is that badly behaved children just relates to a subset of children whereas the implication is that all baby boomers are selfish and have knowingly screwed over future generations.

BIWI · 31/08/2023 18:30

Then I look forward to you calling out threads that make sweeping generalisations about children, teenagers, men, and all the rest of it.

Up to now, @Jamtartforme, I've been reporting threads/posts that are ageist (which applies to young as well as old people), sexist, racist, ableist or homophobic. So you won't have seen me calling things out (not that often, anyway).

But given what MNHQ have said on this thread, I will be doing that a lot more often. It may mean I get deleted, but hey ho.

Not sure why you're trying to insist or suggest that all of those who believe you to be an ageist poster, are somehow inconsistent and only deal with posts that are 'about us' - especially as you have no idea who any of us are, or how old we are. (Apart from me because I think I 'confessed' yesterday!)

BIWI · 31/08/2023 18:58

Actually, I did used to call out posts - mainly on the Style & Beauty boards - that were about age, but nothing ever got done about them, so I stopped. I'll start that again now.

3 reports just today. MNHQ must love you 😂😂

RudsyFarmer · 31/08/2023 20:04

I did report a post on here and was told to join in the debate and rebuke the comments. I honestly haven’t got it in me anymore to argue this stuff. I probably am getting too old I’ll admit. I’m going to just start hiding threads as a way forward.

I'm up for going and doing some rebuking.

They'll have to start paying us soon. 😁

@justasking111 oh, the 3 was just an example 😂 I bishbosh against prejudice all day on here. I've probably got my own moderator. "it's that damn reporter again, her that doesn't like racism, ablism, anti-vax lies etc etc. Send her one of the "we're having a look" emails Deirdre"

IClaudine · 31/08/2023 21:07

I am just going to start reporting everything as well as rebuking if I have the energy.

Just out of interest - do you all believe it’s unacceptable to ever note a generalised pattern of behaviour among a group of people who share a common feature? As it’s an -ism? I’m just curious as to where you draw the line, or whether you’re drawing it here because this particular feature applies to you.

Just out of interest - have you ever read the MN Talk Guidelines? Because it is spelt out quite clearly that ageism is against MN Talk Guidelines, twice.

Just because you've been getting away with it, and just because you feel entitled to your rank "opinions" does not make it okay.

Please, on me: 💥

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 31/08/2023 22:01

Might need to go and do a bit of rebuking on the National Service thread.

Posters seem to be (wilfully) thinking that the (existing already) national civic service scheme is something old people want made compulsory and Finn and Amelia are going to be shipped off to 'Nam to crawl on their bellies in the jungle for 2 years rather than it simply being proposed to opt out if you don't want to do it and it involving helping out at Summer Fetes in the parish and cleaning the rubbish from the village pond.

RudsyFarmer · 31/08/2023 22:01

It’s an acceptable -ism.

All these young people forget they will be older and vulnerable one day and will have to cope with the hatred and being despised by the generations beneath them. Every generation that matures is always convinced that those that went before had the best of the resources. As resources get less available you will be the ones that ran them down and finished them off. They will be disgusted with you too.

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet @MNHQ

Could someone please comment on my post from yesterday regarding guidance on challenging "isms" on thread.

On this thread we are being told that ageism should be challenged on thread. On others we have been told not to do this and to report instead. Like others, I've had posts deleted for challenging egregious "isms" and told to report instead.

So which is it?

Also disappointed to see HQ, with all the demographic research available to marketing companies, perpetuating the "rich boomer" trope when you must know that this generalisation masks a huge issue of poverty in older women and wealth in some younger generations. That is the kind of claim I'd expect on mens' rights sites, not a site which is women centred.

thanks.

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet @MNHQ

Its the third day, any chance of an answer rising?

As it stands, the prevailing instruction from HQ this thread is to challenge "isms" on threads rather than report them.

Up until now posters have been deleted and even banned for challenging "isms" on threads instead of just reporting them. Its a pretty big shift in moderation policy and the talk guidelines don't seem to have changed.

Or do we just cite this thread if we are deleted next time we tell a bigot to FOAD?
