"boomer" thread

You've hidden this evening's offensive, ageist thread, stereotyping "boomers". Will this be deleted? Can we have a robust response to ageism on MN?

I reported a comment using "boomer" as an insult last night but it hasn't been deleted.

Someone was on the red button, because the "Karen" comment on the same thread, made (not unsurprisingly, by one of the "man here" MNers) was quickly zapped.

So, yet again, we have confirmation that it's OK to use ageist offensive language to insult a while group of people.

Thanks for the further (subliminal) clarification HQ! Just so we know where we stand!

PS the group of people being insulted were Tories. I'm that decent that I even defend people whose opinions I objectively despise being insulted because of their age. See? It's not difficult.

Well done 👍
What thread is that?

National Service. You do have to wade through the "my lad's not joining the army" wilful misunderstanding if you can be arsed. 😂

Maireas · 01/09/2023 09:20

Ok, thanks

We need to add "blue-rinse brigade" to something that MN doesn't seem offensive.

I'm not even sure who the 'blue rinse brigade' would be. The last cohort of older women with a blue rinse must have been in the latev70s. After this the punks took over with the blue hair (and other colours) mind you the original punks will be getting on a bit now.

I vividly remember a woman I'm her 50s phoning to say she would be late for work as she had had an accident with her hair dye. She eventually strolled in with bright purple hair accessorised with a grey dress and a purple necklace. She looked fabulous! Kudos to her. 1978.

sunglassesonthetable · 01/09/2023 12:24

Blue /purple/pink/grey rinse - more likely to be in their 20s.

Maireas · 01/09/2023 12:27

Kudos to her indeed! When I was very young I remember some women had a blue rinse, but that fell out of favour as you said, @CaptainMyCaptain latest 1970?
I had blue hair in my punk days, when I decided to have a buzz cut, to the horror of my mother! I then tried orange, but it came out a strange red/brown.

My Gran had blue/purple/ silver rinses right up until she died in the early 90s she used silver shampoo , a cousin shared a photo recently with our gran with magnificent helmet hair it did not move from one week to the next when she went and got a shampoo and set.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/09/2023 12:56

I suggested to my husband I might have a lilac rinse when I finally let my hair go grey. He wasn't keen but we'll see ...

Do it 😃 my friend is grey and gets rinses through her hair.

Love this Blue Rinse Set 💥

Love it! A lot of students I teach have those pastel rinses.

I graduated with purple streaks.

Does anyone else on this thread feel they're missing out never having been shouted at by an older person on a bus? #FOMO

😏

🤣 I read that thread but so far nobody had suggested all old people do this. I was waiting for it though.

A recent post explicitly says that she was picked on by an older person specifically for being younger. Thankfully several posters have pointed out that arseholes are arseholes whatever their age.

I didn't get that far. It had to happen but I'm glad other posters responded that way.

Maireas · 01/09/2023 13:45

Indeed. Sadly, the quality of arseholiness transcends, age, gender, sexuality and ethnicity.
The only danger is thinking the latter causes the former.

We now have a sweeping generalisation / ageist post which I've both challenged and reported.

That one's all over every pension thread.
Chip's mighty heavy on those young shoulders.

Maireas · 01/09/2023 14:05

It's a dangerous myth that's being perpetrated. Too easy and lazy to blame a particular generational group for society's ills. Much harder to look at other causes.
Interesting that Macron is putting a 60% tax on UK 2nd homeowners in France. Think what that policy would do here....
