Why won’t MNet take seriously other sites trolling here?

Welllookiehere · 01/01/2023 02:39

Tattle users are openly bragging about trolling this site, including confessing to being behind one long standing, very identifiable thread on here. When reported MN say they don’t look at other sites. Meanwhile photographs are taken from another thread on here daily for ridicule over there, whilst the people on the thread here keep posting unaware their images are being used to poke fun at.

Mumsnet has become sport for Tattle users to troll. Surely it’s in the interest of this to look at other sites and protect the users here? There will always be trolls as long as there is an internet, but when someone on another site is actively telling you they are behind things surely you have a duty to take that seriously?

It's a public forum. Best not to take it too seriously.

RoseslnTheHospital · 01/01/2023 02:51

How on earth could you possibly show that a user on a different site who is claiming to be behind a thread actually is? Anyone could say that, and it can't be verified unless you have access to both sites user details. Even if you did, it would rely on the user having used the same details to sign up for both and not be obscuring their IP.

When you post on a public site like MN, part of doing that is to understand that anything you write might be picked up by others and repeated. For nice uses or not so nice uses. That's how public posting works. Name change frequently if you don't want to become a recognised poster.

dolor · 01/01/2023 02:54

Yeaaahh well the thing is, some folks on MN are guilty of doing the same since forever, so it's always going to go in circles.

Just disengage whenever you see it happening.

Comewithmefriday · 01/01/2023 02:54

Not sure it warrants this level of reaction. People have ripped the piss out of mumsnet since time immemorial.

Gronkle · 01/01/2023 03:01

We are mums and a lot of us are middle aged women, we are apparently fair game, sad bastards they are.

Surely it warrants looking into, not just a blanket ‘we don’t look at other sites’. Especially when the People involved in the threads seem to post at the same times on both sites. It’s a game to get threads into the Mail and into Classics. It’s not always been like this. I’ve been here many many years and although trolls have always been present they haven’t been a competitive sport.

I do namechange frequently, but frankly i find it deeply uncomfortable to come across a photo of a mnetter who’s sharing on a thread on a not especially busy board, where they are ridiculing everything she is wearing and everything around her. Yes, it’s up to those posters to decide what to share, but I feel it does bear repeating that there are folk out there who live to put down others and that’s where there images may end up.

There is nothing that MN can look into. They don't have control or access to other sites. There's no way of joining up users posting here with people posting screenshots on other sites. Anyone could be doing that.

All MN could possibly do is post a reminder at the top of threads that whatever anyone posts is public and could be picked up and used by anyone, anywhere online. Which really, people should be aware of if they are using the Internet to post publicly.

Welllookiehere · 01/01/2023 03:19

Trolling aside, I guess what I am saying is, when MNet become aware that a thread has been picked up, either for ridicule on another site or by newspapers etc, why can they not post a warning on those threads that this has happened.
That would then give the Posters to those threads the choice whether to share further or not and to possibly request their posts/images removal.

Some users from here also use Tattle. It's not trolling. There's also a thread discussing Mumsnet over there but it's never nasty that I recall.

Never nasty? That particular thread is ridiculing a posters clothing, home and even dog. It’s actually beyond nasty.

As for ‘it’s not trolling’….

“My sister and I post daft threads all the time on MN ...a fair few have made the 'daily fail'...we both have one each going at the moment (name changed of course:cool:) we are getting loads of helpful suggestions👨‍👦⛄:ROFLMAO::LOL:”

Which thread are you talking about in particular please?

chillinean · 01/01/2023 03:37

I stand corrected @Welllookiehere That's just cruel.

I am sorry. That's appalling, and the irony that there are complaints about Mumsnet bullying on that thread.

chillinean · 01/01/2023 03:51

I can't log in to my account from here (it's been a long time since I logged in) but I will post something on their thread when I can, if nobody else does.

Motelschmotel · 01/01/2023 04:33

What makes you think they (or anyone) is telling the whole truth here (or anywhere)?

It’s the Internet. Worldwide and accessible by all. You literally have no idea who or what or where or why about ANY of it.

ExhaustedFlamingo · 01/01/2023 04:35

I saw you had a comment deleted on a very longstanding thread series last night @Welllookiehere but I came along too late to see what it originally said. I gather it was calling someone out for BS.

I've never looked at Tattle but I might go on over to see for myself what's being said about MN on there.

dolor · 01/01/2023 04:37

Ohhhh so it's fake stories made up by tattlers so see how quickly they can cause the infamous Mumsnet frothing LOL

Tbh there are some right frothers in the archives.

Welllookiehere · 01/01/2023 04:55

Fake stories and commentary like this.

”Feel like her house smells of charity shops and 3 day old pasta bake”

As this post has now been noted on there I expect an influx of Tattle posters to appear and try and justify comments like the above so I shall step back.

My last comment on this is to @MNHQ and is this.
You can pop on threads to warn posters not to trust medical advice, you can pop on threads to warn against sending money. Please consider popping on to warn posters that a thread has been picked up by other forums or the news if you are alerted to it.

I've name changed.

Yes. I think the 'trolling' sounds low level and the claims of having troll threads in classics may not even be true. There's worse actual trolling from the incel men and other trolls.

I don't think there's much Mumsnet can do about Tattle taking photos of people and being unkind. That will be down to the other Tattle members to speak out against it. It's a nice, harmless thread and nice bunch of women they've picked on Sad not someone horrible from AIBU.

It's probably a good reminder to be careful about what we post.

I agree, it might be bravado over the troll threads. And as I said above I do know stopping trolls is an almost impossible task sadly.

The tone of that bothered me so much because as you say, it’s a nice little thread in a more tucked away part of the forum where a group of ladies felt safe enough to chat and share their daily photos. I don’t post photos online, I never have, but I can fully imagine discovering a group of supposed adults cackling like children over what I was wearing could be quite detrimental to mental health.

But anyway, I have said my bit. It’s now up to MNet to decide whether a reminder should be posted, it’s a NewYear, a beautiful day and I’m going out to enjoy it.

It could, and I'm not sure I'd like them to know about what's been said for that very reason. The unkind comments aren't confined to what they're wearing but also their houses/rooms /decor.

Like I said, of all the people they could have picked on...

If you need telling that things you post on the internet are accessible to everyone and anyone who has the internet, you shouldn't be on the internet. MN is a site with thousands (if not millions) of users. If it's not a private group, It's basic common sense not to post stuff you don't want people other than family and friends to see/talk about. We're adults not children and don't need treating as such.

dolor · 01/01/2023 09:12

Oh goddammit, you need an invite code to sign up to tattle now, which is sad because bits of it look like fun.

AnImaginaryCat · 01/01/2023 09:26

Never sought out another discussion forum before; so thanks for bringing attention to one @Welllookiehere. Very thoughtful.

Just had a read of the thread you mentioned. Reads like any thread on here that's on here that's about typical MN posters pointing out how crazy/hypocritical/unpleasant/other adjective they are. Only difference is it's not on MN and therefore missing that delicious irony that they are also a MN poster.

In fact it seems to be actually less nasty than MN posts slagging off MN posters. Posters seem more able to handle differing opinions. No demands to agree with me "be kind", or doing something like correcting grammar or spelling just have something to put someone down.

Wonder how that happens, considering it's also a public forum that anyone can post on. Or even copy and paste or take screen shots of and post about on other forums.

Polkadotties · 01/01/2023 09:41

Tattle is a much friendlier place than MN. No one gets piled on and driven off threads

nc824 · 01/01/2023 09:52

It wouldn't bother me if we were allowed to call out trolls on here.
