What is it with all these threads being deleted??

Every day now there seems to be a thread deleted on aibu - it's the only section I'm really on, but pretty much every day lately I'll see a thread, read it, then return to it later to get an update and it's been deleted. I've been on Mumsnet since 2009 and threads were rarely deleted until recently , this last year or so it seems to happen so much. Are more people just trying to troll or wind us up, or what's the reason behind this huge increase in deletions?

OP posts:

There was an explanation from mumsnet when I clicked on it. Said they could confirm was not a genuine post.

That one did have all the bells and whistles and fell down where the OP said they were going to legally adopt the ''Stepchild'' when the SC was Eighteen.

That isn't possible.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 04/05/2022 02:03

Yeah that one was a quick escalating bag of pants

AIBU is a haven for trolls. Why not try reading other topics on MN instead? There's a wealth of stuff that isn't so infested.

Relationships is just as bad though. There's nothing like an affair, a discovery , a trip to the solicitor all with the space of a week for loads of high fives.

I was surprised the "Husband ruined my Eid" was deleted - does anyone know why it was?

It probably got derailed because a stupid person asked what Eid was, but otherwise it sounded like the Muslim version of all the threads you get at Christmas where the wife runs herself ragged doing all the catering, house preparation, hosting and present buying for both sides of the family and the husband sits on his arse and watches.

TalkingCat · 04/05/2022 04:07

I don't believe there are many trolls on here. I believe there are people who automatically disbelieve every thread and report it for no reason and it is then deleted. I know of a couple of people on another site who were truly genuine, and because their thread was reported just because someone didn't believe them, their thread was deleted. They couldn't even defend themselves. I think troll hunters are an insidious problem on this board, and I think every single thread is reported for something. That these troll hunters (who are the trolls themselves) are allowed to get away with getting innocent people deleted is disgraceful. People who report threads for no reason should be banned.

You can tell from the outset that these are written for the long haul and there are many 'parts' to come 🙄

and there are many 'parts' to come

Yes because that is what happens in real life. What is so strange about that?

MNHQ seem to be deleting absolutely everything at the moment. We don't seem to get an update before, like they're a banned user etc but just a generic thread deleted.

To be fair to mn I've read a lot more obviously trolling threads very recently. Take everything with a pinch of salt would be my recommendation.

Maireas · 04/05/2022 05:48

The teacher and the haircut one was so obviously made up. Whether it was to annoy teachers or be provocative on the trans/cis labelling issue, who knows.
People are very gullible about school and teacher ones, though.

If it’s entertaining who cares if it’s true or not, or who cares if it’s a troll or not.

Realistically loads of threads are probably exaggerated but no one is hurt by them as everything is anonymous.

Because trolls don't just "entertain"
Trolls lie about dead babies
Trolls scam people with sob stories
Trolls astroturf
Trolls sockpuppet
Trolls invent "entertaining" threads with thinly veiled racist, disablist and ageist content
Trolls ask about when your teenage daughter got tits so they can wank over your answer
Trolls ask about your bowels and piss habits

If that's what you consider entertaining and think doesn't matter, then you may have issues.

'Pure Made Up Shite' should be the name of the topic where all the troll threads are moved to!

If you're after the Pure Made Up Shite board, it's called Mumsnet Classics. Grin
It's a bit confusing as prior to the hilarity and demographic changing moment that was Penis Beaker, some of them were genuine. Since then, probably about 3 of them.
We could suggest to HQ that there's a holding pen section called Aiming For Classics!

Blackbird2020 · 04/05/2022 06:04

Then you have the Daily Fail and the red top "journalists" posting to provoke reactions that they can post online

Wouldn’t put it past the DM to generate their own content by creating goady threads on MN. It’s probably some intern tasked with a column a week.

MN have a real problem on their hands - I think the high deletion rate shows they are worried…

Sofielou · 04/05/2022 06:08

Yes, I know of at least one person who this has happened to, too.

RunIsAFourLetterWord · 04/05/2022 06:17

Very well said, @PAFMO . Some perfect examples of how trolling actually can really hurt people. And yes, some will smugly say 'oh but it's just words on a screen, don't get invested, I never would', but people do get invested, that's the nature of forums, it's fecking human nature. It's why trolls troll the way they do.

KatherineJaneway · 04/05/2022 06:18

Because posters get their arse handed to them on a plate, so they ask MNHQ to delete it 'for privacy reasons' or similar.

This happens a lot. 'This thread is causing op concerns in real life...' Yes having to face up to the fact they were in the wrong.

For the first time I can remember there was even a troll on Employment Issues saying they had been "overpaid £££££?!?!?!" with the punctuation added for extra effect. The delete message even said they were a troll !

For some reason the incidents of dubious posting has increased exponentially, not sure why but there's definitely an upward trend. Maybe it's a reflection of people's general discontent with the world atm.

JustJoinedRightNow · 04/05/2022 06:26

The one I commented on was about the partner who ruined the night out at the panto/comedy show by being a miserable git. I went on to it and it said deleted as OP put lots of identifying info in. She did not! She was militant about using “they” and would not say if her partner was male or female, and it was so vague about details, that I call bullshit on there being identifying details!

Cryingintherain99 · 04/05/2022 06:27

The ones that I comment on (thinking I am giving helpful advice) that I check back on and have been deleted make me really paranoid.
I go over what I said in my comment wondering if I said anything wrong without meaning to or broke any rules I wasn't aware of.
I have ASD and it really plays havoc with my head.

Zonder · 04/05/2022 06:28

Ginger1982 · 03/05/2022 23:15

One I was on about the husband making the OP dump her step child was frosted without even an explanation. Just 'thread deleted'.

Thanks for explaining. I thought it was just me losing track. What a shame.

gamerchick · 04/05/2022 06:32

PortiaFimbriata · 03/05/2022 23:40

It was a big fat hairy troll, that's why. My troll-dar isn't that advanced, but it leaped out at me (the overly saintly nature of the OP was a bit of a giveaway).

Ketchup troll was also "boycott M&S for unhealthy food" troll.

That thread had more holes in it than a showerhead. Blatant contradictions and people still didn't spot it. That poster must have been killing themselves laughing. Took it's time being deleted though.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 04/05/2022 06:35

I never get to invested in any thread on here now for this very reason.

rocketfromthecrypt · 04/05/2022 06:37

tillytoodles1 · 03/05/2022 22:41

They're scared of losing their advertisers so they delete anything that might appear to he controversial.

This. MNHQ are so trigger happy now and will delete anything that's not totally harmonious. Also quite often where people disagree with the OP MNHQ will bend over and delete if the OP cites 'privacy concerns'.

Many years ago MN had an official collaboration with the Mail for content, so hardly surprising that journalists have continued to use the site.

Quincythequince · 04/05/2022 06:45

I agree. And the constant deleting of posts too. Happens a lot.
Precious lot we must now have using this place.

jitterbugruby · 04/05/2022 06:56

I agree about too many threads being reported. I had a previous account and had posted a couple of times and changed details of my Childrens ages only marginally to keep myself anonymous. I received really helpful comments. I then posted again, probably a year later and used ages for my children not in keeping with my previous post. Again I got some really helpful comments but someone looked through my previous posts, thought I was a troll, reported me to mumsnet and my threads and whole account was deleted.
Obviously some people will troll but some are just trying to preserve their anonymity. I think mumsnet need to be careful about deleting posts that could be genuine particularly when people are looking for support.
