Can we please have something done about the ableism and mask exemption hatred on here.

@MNHQ Its been running rampant on the AIBU and Coronavirus boards on here for months and is now starting to leak into Chat too.

Its getting ridiculous. There needs to be a zero tolerance with this as there is with racism. I got banned for a week last month for losing a rag and name calling but this was after months of this discrimination on here.

It needs to be treated in the same way racism is. Which is just as abhorrent But it isnt.

I've no seen any mask exemption hatred, quite the opposite actually

VHSappy · 22/10/2020 20:57

Where was this? I've only seen support for mask exemption.

I agree Helena. Some of the posts on that thread in particular are disgusting

Taswama · 22/10/2020 21:18

Totally support you Helena. Some people seem to think that if you can't wear a mask you should stay at home.

its not comparable to RACISM at all!!

This.

that thread you linked to @helenadove is from august, full of deletions and smacks of clutching at straws!

Have you read the first post Helena linked to? It's current.
grenlei · 22/10/2020 21:44

I'm surprised given that MN are often trigger happy for the most minor things that in the recent thread linked to above people are getting away with saying the disabled shouldn't be allowed out of the house!

I don't get why people can't understand that there can be reasons you can't wear a mask which aren't visible and don't mean you are automatically someone at high risk if you catch Covid and therefore must be sequestered at home forever...

Even then if you do have a health condition which means you are at increased risk, you're not under house arrest and it's not illegal to leave the house and get some shopping. In fact if you have no one to shop for you for whatever reason it's pretty bloody essential!

GirlCrush · 22/10/2020 21:45

no i'm not reading all 8 pages of it

i read it when it started though, not been back to it today

i work in retail so i'm living the mask issues every single day, from all sides

still not seeing how its even slightly comparable to racism

wanderings · 22/10/2020 21:45

We could also do with Covid threads being promptly moved to the Coronavirus topic, so they're not cluttering up Mumsnet. Some threads seemingly "have to" be in AIBU for voting, but Chat is becoming infected by Covid, Covid, Covid.

PasstheBucket89 · 22/10/2020 21:48

You're quite right Disablism isnt the same as racism, its worse, if its aimed at the mentally disabled who cannot defend themselves, i am concerned at how much disabilism is allowed.

Are you blind?
esmethurst · 22/10/2020 22:12

@Willow2017

Are you often so rude?

All the threads I've ever seen are support for those not wearing a mask. Supported by the fact the PP straight after me thought exactly the same.

Willow2017 · 22/10/2020 22:30

Telling people to make an effort, wear this wear that or stay at home is not being supportive at all.
Some of the hate on here is mindblowing.
"I can so you can" without even resding the actual reason why a person cant is not supporting anyone.
I have seen some vile posts attacking women who have had unspeakable teauma making mask wearing impossible being rounded on by many posters telkungn5hem to sya6 a5 home and not go out at all, ever, as its no excuse.

Unadulterated hate is alive and well on MN.

I never said those specific words were supporting anyone

I'm saying that I've not seen that sort of thing being said, I've only seen support.

Maybe instead of insinuating that I'm blind, you should engage your own brain and realise that every single person doesn't see every single thing the same on MN?

ColonSemiColon · 22/10/2020 23:35

Lol at someone using ‘are you blind?’ as an insult while on a thread complaining about disablism.

Willow2017 · 23/10/2020 00:41

It wasnt an insult it was at question.
Anyone who has read any of the recent mask.threads, especially the one quoted here would have seen the vile comments aimed at the op.

DustyLoafer · 23/10/2020 00:48

I have AIBU topic hidden now, it's bliss. So much better for my stress levels, no drama!
It became just a load of background noise.

nimnnimntypl · 23/10/2020 02:08

I'm really upset by this. I have PTSD from domestic violence including being suffocated. As well as PTSD it's caused health conditions. I find it very traumatising when I see people not in masks. I don't want to survive DV then die of coronavirus. I know it's not definite but disability means it's more chance of dying and masks make me feel safer. I didn't feel safe when I had my experiences that caused the PTSD. I know some people can't wear masks and it's probably irrational but I can't help feeling upset and offended and like not in my name. Not in my name for the PTSD and as a disabled person. I'm sorry for feeling that way but it's upsetting me a lot.
