'Promoted by Mumsnet' ads making site jumpy

NoWordForFluffy · 03/10/2020 07:38

I'm sick of these ads. I open a page, and just when it loads to the first unread message, it jumps around as the 'Promoted by Mumsnet' ad then decides it's going to bloody load. The number of times I've ended up clicking on the wrong thing while it's leaping around is ridiculous. Angry

They're ruining my enjoyment. Either get them to load at the same time as the page or get rid of them! (iPhone 7, iOS 13.7, mobile site on Safari, WiFi and data connections.)

Photo attached of the type of offending ad.

I thought it was just my phone, so I'm glad you raised this. I keep clicking on the wrong thread as well. It is very irritating.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/10/2020 07:56

Yes! It's driving me to distraction (I'm also glad it's not just me).

Helpful comment!

Have to agree - I use the website, and it makes it impossible to click on anything quickly.

It's not like they're not all the same size - just tell the website that a certain size is going to load, which will create the space quickly for the ad to eventually load into!

@BillywilliamV

Meh, sign up for Premium! No ads.,
You mean fewer ads. Premium never promised no ads. MNHQ have confirmed ads like the one in the OP are still visible for those with premium.

Have checked with the team and they've confirmed that Premium subscribers will still be seeing MN discount ads like this one, but not the banner ads. Please let us know if you're seeing any of those.

Personally, I think it's a trick to get you to accidentally click the ads. MN probably get paid per click on the ad and so every time you go to click a thread and accidentally land on the ad its revenue to them.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/10/2020 12:24

The cynic in me thinks you're right, @meme69.

Yep. Been driving me barmy for weeks.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 03/10/2020 16:06

Hello @NoWordForFluffy thanks for letting us know. We'll get our ads team to look into this now.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/10/2020 16:27

Thank you @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet!

Thank you from me as well.

I have ad blocker on my laptop, so the ads aren't an issue there.

coldgraybrix · 05/10/2020 14:20

It happens all the time on the desktop site. You go to click on something just as an ad decides to open at the top of the screen, and you end up clicking on something other than what you want.

It is seriously annoying. And I mean annoying.

NoWordForFluffy · 14/10/2020 13:47

It was fixed. And now it's back. Yay. 🙄

Hi @NoWordForFluffy sorry to hear you're having problems again! Please can you let us have a screenshot again if possible?

Hopefully we can sort this issue out quickly. Flowers

Stuff jumping around is called Cumulative Layout Shift & it’s something (one of many things, but still something) that Google can mark sites down for.

NoWordForFluffy · 29/10/2020 06:03

It's still doing it. How is it not fixed yet?!

OP posts:
NoWordForFluffy · 04/11/2020 06:10

And it's still doing it. It actually seems worse after last night's problems.

IrenetheQuaint · 04/11/2020 06:18

Yes, this is infuriating and means I am constantly clicking on the wrong thread because the page jumps as I'm clicking.

JamieLeeCurtains · 04/11/2020 06:22

When I'm on my tablet, it's obvious that MN is freezing for me because there's too much data per page trying to load.

In in-page commercial ads for various companies have also started appearing in languages which I do not read or speak, have never googled, and with which I have no connection.

All very weird.

NoWordForFluffy · 04/11/2020 06:30

There seem to be way more adverts now and these don't always load quickly.

It's so frustrating.

OP posts:
JamieLeeCurtains · 04/11/2020 06:52

page adverts trying to load, and a banner as at the top.

Took me three attempts to post this because the page froze again, mid-post.

JamieLeeCurtains · 04/11/2020 06:55

That should have said, on this one page there's 5 ads trying to load plus a banner ad. Just on one page of 23 posts.

Nanny0gg · 04/11/2020 09:05

Happening to me too. Its not just the Premium ads either
