Does MNHQ Check Our Inboxes?

Just wondering. I received a private message and sent 2 replies and now the recipient has received a message from MNHQ saying the replies were removed at my request. Except that's not true, I made no such request.

Why did they get rid of the thread that was the same as this one but let this one run?

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 15/04/2020 01:22

Oohh! This happened to me too today!
I saw my message icon flashing merrily away (I hardly ever get messages so was intrigued lol) - clicked on and saw it had "been removed at users request" Confused
I've been pretty vocal on threads lately so thought I must have pissed someone off and then they had a change of heart and retracted Grin
@MNHQ what's going on lol

ArriettyJones · 15/04/2020 01:24

Probably because this one was started late at night. MNHQ don’t work these hours. The Nightwatch provide voluntary cover for the really dodgy stuff, but full moderation will not start again until 7 or 8am.

ArriettyJones · 15/04/2020 01:25

That was to @lilmishap

BakedCam · 15/04/2020 01:27

Fair enough.

I read that as it was. A joke on another site....

Are any sites 'rival sites' ? I think MN has been around long enough to have a fairly firm user base? I've not been an avid poster but been around for years on and off. Whixh is the beauty of the site. I like here and Gransnet.

I guess, like most sites, it will bring its challengers, disruptors and a core group of both who will splinter and serve up elsewhere.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 15/04/2020 01:27

Ah, that would because it wasn't about someone possibly providing details of a new forum so not in your business interests to deal with, eh?

Ahhh, is THAT why?!
Sounds like mass spamming of links then,
Maybe one was reported, and they have a way of deleting all others?
Would make sense if so.

They have a wage bill of £350K a month, but rely on volunteers at night?

lilmishap · 15/04/2020 01:30

@BakedCam MumsNet and NetMums are surely quite close to rivalry in terms of advertising....and names.

ArriettyJones · 15/04/2020 01:34

It’s the groups that are formed by disgruntled MNers that tend to cause a bit of tension and bickering. I think that’s the theme here rather than commercial competitors.

The place where the insect joke was made splintered off as a group of ex-mumsnetters who were pissed off about a really disastrous bit of modding (involving a terminally ill woman, her pervy predator of a DH, and some questionable fundraising).

This time this batch of defectors are annoyed about premium subscription.

There was a group called moldies who just wanted a super secret clubhouse for their BFFs.

It’s an annual event.

ArriettyJones · 15/04/2020 01:36

I think you and I both know this has been discussed at length before @Badbilly Grin

I agree, it’s a bit naughty of them.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 15/04/2020 01:36

@BringMeSunshineInMyLife
I expect the people promoting their new site (I have no issue with it) are being banned and subsequently their messages disappear along with them

Is it an X rated site?

If it's the one I'm thinking of (and I assume it is as was on a thread earlier which is why I prob got the message too) and going by some of the usernames with tin hats on in this thread -
It's a site set up with a similar name to MN, by people (or person) pissed off that MN has a subscriber option and they think that's not good (neither do I but meh)
Also seems to be a place some want to go as can say "transwomen men whoohoo" as MN increasingly won't let us ) it's just all shite.
I won't be venturing over there if that's what it's for.

BakedCam · 15/04/2020 01:37

I went to Netmums. Too many colours and emojis for me @lilmishap but yes, I'd imagine NM is the biggest rival of MN in terms of subscribers and advertisers. They appear to have existed alongside each other for years, it would seem.

BakedCam · 15/04/2020 01:42

First time I have seen this occur but as I said, I'm rarely about any forum to be honest. I prefer the serenity of Gransnet these days. :)

Thanks for explaining though @ArriettyJones. It is all starting to make sense now.

ArriettyJones · 15/04/2020 01:44

YW. I am just relieved it’s not a data breach.

itswonkylampshade · 15/04/2020 02:53

I’ve signed up to the other forum and it’s good. Not interested in the MN bashing threads and I’ll probably keep using both, but boy, does it make you wonder how the heck this one can possibly take £350k/m in staff costs to run!? It’s poor by comparison and very outdated.

Monty27 · 15/04/2020 02:56

I had it too. It smelt of a hacker. I meant to email Justine. I'll do it now.

GinnyStrupac · 15/04/2020 03:20

The screenshot from a pp showing the new site (MC) just looks like a rip off of MN. It should at least show some originality, for goodness sake!

Starting a new site? Fine. Trying to poach via MN PMs - not fine. Making your new site look just like MN - not fine.

MandyDingle · 15/04/2020 03:30

It’s exactly the same as the site that the mums one is a spin off from so they weren’t trying to copy MN or make it look like MN. Just obviously used the same template and wanted to keep the branding the same. Also loads of websites are blue (digital spy) and have similar forums am I being unreasonable/what would you do/am I the asshole etc.

I visit about 8-10 forums, they’re not ‘in competition’ for me as a user, I just rotate between them depending what I feel like reading or which one I visited first or what help I need.

bettybattenburg · 15/04/2020 03:35

I had that message about the new site too. And now its been deleted at the request of the user. Yeah, right

I had an email from MNHQ to say they had banned the new user and deleted all the PMs.

itswonkylampshade · 15/04/2020 03:41

Yes, be so easy to give it its own look. I think that’ll happen in time - it’s clearly a swipe at this place!

It’s obviously been set up by a disgruntled mner who’s fed up with the poor functionality of this site and is demonstrating how very easy it’d be to make it user friendly (and respond to some of the long-term requests for adaptations).

I can understand the frustration in light of the tone deaf request for cash from mumsnetters, in all honesty. That’s just wrong, particularly in light of the ludicrous salary bill...this is patently the sort of site that could easily be run by three or four full time people with the right expertise.

Despite a bit of eye-rolling at the superficial similarities I think the potential is there for it to do well as it is a much better set up for users and I think MN has neglected user experience.

It’s terrible that the night watch is run by volunteers, for example, when there’s £350k per month rolling around to pay people to do goodness knows what. Moderation is important and those people should be paid.

LoveLongLife · 15/04/2020 06:32

*It’s transparent enough.

If I had a sweet shop and you had a sweet shop and you came into my shop and started handing my customers flyers inviting them to your shop, I’d boot you out*

No it's not! It's an outright lie. It's like you saying the flyer person wanted to leave of their own accord. They didn't. You grabbed their flyers and shoved them out the door!

The notice lies,* saying* that the user requested deletion. No they did not! It was MN going all North Korea over us and then covering it up with a lie.

It would have shown much more integrity to have said removed by MN because it contravenes something.

Is there any law against helping yourself to my private messages? I take issue with this.

LoveLongLife · 15/04/2020 06:34

I had an email from MNHQ to say they had banned the new user and deleted all the PMs

That would have been the better thing to do. I received no email telling the truth. I had Mumsnet go into my private messaging and place a fictional explanation as to why my message has gone. I won't be using the PM service ever again, is it even legal to interfere like that?

KatherineJaneway · 15/04/2020 06:42

Have I been picked last in PE again?

You and me both Sad

TheCanterburyWhales · 15/04/2020 07:16

Coming back to this, so if most of the deleted "at user's request" messages were about the new website (mine was over a year ago and definitely not inviting me anywhere, and others I've seen talked about on SS we're ages ago too) then it seems that when HQ do look in inboxes (this has also been asked before and yes they can, but no they don't unless extreme circumstances) and delete stuff, their system posts that message that it was at "user's request"
Was definitely a glitch with me though, me and the other poster asked.

Saucery · 15/04/2020 07:26

I had one too, from ‘theodoref’. Removed also. Is it because MNHQ have banned that poster? Would it have been to do with the alternative chat site?
