Just wondering. I received a private message and sent 2 replies and now the recipient has received a message from MNHQ saying the replies were removed at my request. Except that's not true, I made no such request.

I do think the moderation is heavy handed but there is no way on earth you will evolve as a site without bringing in stringent moderation. You may get away with it while it remains relatively small but you won't if it becomes popular. You will either end up having to be being soft and cushy sweet like NM, or you'll put off moderate users.

And you forget the legal side of things.

Not me. Not my site. Not my users or moderators or legal side of things. I’m a member. I’ve posted on two threads (one about a landlord and one about what you would tell your teenage self) one post on each and that’s it. I have and have had no more input into that forum than that. If that input makes it my site then I guess I own MN hundreds of times over.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 15/04/2020 12:28

I’m not sure your postman would thank me.

My postman has never been happier! You know he's coming because he's now chatting loudly on his phone when he passes. He literally dumps - not places, you hear the 'thud' - any packages on the doorstep and sometimes doesn't even bother to give a notice knock. His job has never been over so quickly!!

Pelleas · 15/04/2020 12:31

The screenshots of this other site don't make it look enticing. I won't be jumping ship.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 15/04/2020 12:32

Not me. Not my site.

Semantics. 'They' 'Their' 'They're'

Point remains.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 15/04/2020 12:32

*Another bold fail

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 15/04/2020 12:39

And you forget the legal side of things

Exactly, you can't just post whatever the hell you like "cos we not children" = er, doesn't work like that.
There needs to be some moderating going on otherwise you'll come unstuck eventually

UserDeleted · 15/04/2020 12:40

I could stick to Page 1 of AIBU on here and be able to provide screenshots that show MN as a vile place. That doesn’t mean thats all MN is.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/04/2020 12:47

Canyou trademark something as ubiquitous as forum title? Real question

Apparently not: copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p18_copyright_names

Dorp · 15/04/2020 12:57

I’m a bit more alarmed to see people have had messages including their passwords!! Have HQ made any comment on that? Has the site been hacked? Again?

Bollocks. The users who have posted these threads are referring to personal email messages, nothing to do with MN messages.

I also had the message inviting me to the new site. I didn't reply, and MN deleted it, as per other PPs. I've signed up to the new site anyway and find it interesting and user-friendly. I hate the 'like' facility they have though and the edit function is time-limited, although I've not worked out what the time is. They have a proper quote function, which I do like. Their Feminism board doesn't have to kow-tow to TRAs because they have no advertising. I'll probably use both the new site and MN.

Dorp · 15/04/2020 12:58

All the members over there were asked to spam here to recruit members via PM.

Bullshit. Stop inventing things.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 15/04/2020 12:59

Semantics. 'They' 'Their' 'They're'

Thank you. Those differences matter in these days of heightened paranoia and accusations.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 15/04/2020 13:00

Thanks for that link puzzled that's cleared up then.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 15/04/2020 13:01

The users who have posted these threads are referring to personal email messages, nothing to do with MN messages.

Thank you for the clarification. Not sure why someone posted those when they’re nothing to do with MN. Confused

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 15/04/2020 13:03

Point taken.

Pelleas · 15/04/2020 13:03

It was the 'like' button that I found most off-putting.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 15/04/2020 13:11

why would you think it a good idea to send your personal details over to a site sending out mass spamming recruiting links and just seems to be set up by people sulking with MN?

I signed up to the new site this morning, because I'm familiar with the better functionality from other forums which use it and because this isn't the school playground where you can't play with Sandra any more if you talked to Karen at break time; it's possible to sign up to more than one similar forum at once and see which one (or more) works best for you. Literally the only 'personal detail' I had to offer up was a burner email. I've been a member of OpenSource-based forums for years, in one case over 15 years, and I have never been subject to a data breach the way I have as a member of MN.

Don't join if you don't want to, no one is going to cry over the lack of you, but please don't make out that MN is some bastion of internet security compared to sites with inherently better security as the default standard.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/04/2020 13:12

You're very welcome, Catherine
As often said I'm no lawyer, but it seems to me that it's "identifiers" which are copyrighted rather than generic names and ideas - so for example you can market a cola drink but not call it Coke, or use a colour/concept in a forum but only if it's not exclusive to the original user

YgritteSnow · 15/04/2020 13:32

Anyone that crosses MN will soon be begging to come back here.

Begging who? Is there some kind of Kim Yong-un equivalent ruling the roost at MNHQ we weren't aware of?

RishiSunakFanClub · 15/04/2020 16:04

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg

Far too logical for the frothers on here. Didn't you know? The other forum has over 900 members and all of them have invaded MN spamming the name of the new site. Oh wait, that may be incorrect, I think I've seen one on here Grin

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 15/04/2020 16:18

Grin

Er.... who's frothing lol?
I'm seeing a lot of toys being thrown out of prams though and setting up a new splinter group 'cos "MN won't let us play properly" etc I mean WTF Grin
And nobody's said all 900 members have been spamming links though.
It's blatantly obvious from the screenshots upthread there have been people on the new sulking board along the lines of "hur, hur let's all spam the boards"
Not to mention the sockpuppeting from one member on the threads, the mutliple spamming PM's of which did happen as I got one, yeah can see why MN deleted them all lol.
It's like being back at school in the playground with some on here Grin

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 15/04/2020 16:22

Before this gets jumped on, people have done exactly like that as it's blatantly obvious from some of the comments and some of the usernames is that a big reason the other one is "I'm going off here, it's better there" is because "We can say what we like over there! Not like MN being mean"/can't run their site/etc/etc yeah!
Grin

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 15/04/2020 16:29

Well I certainly agree with that.

UserDeleted · 15/04/2020 16:33

That grinning face is looking at me funny. Please stop.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 15/04/2020 16:36

Emojis are looking at you funny?
Oookay lol I'll tell it to pack it in, maybe that'll work?

UserDeleted · 15/04/2020 16:44

There were too many in a short space. And it has a too wide grin.
