Introducing AIBU voting

TomMumsnet · 17/06/2019 13:25

Hi all,

We're testing out a new feature on AIBU. From today, a few randomly selected Mumsnet users will be able to access a voting function on AIBU posts.

We're testing the vote function because in user feedback lots of you asked for a quick way to answer an AIBU post (essentially; YABU or YANBU).
The general thinking was that this would encourage more interaction - so we're trying it out from today, let's see how it goes.

It won't show on all AIBU posts but you should see it on a few - and importantly, the OP will be able to turn on (or off) the voting function themselves.

Hopefully you'll find it useful - and as ever, we'd love to hear your feedback - so please give it a try, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Oh, and if you really aren't a fan then no problem, just head over to your Talk preferences and you'll be able to switch off (and back on) the voting feature.

Thanks
MNHQ

Woo hoo! How exiting. Grin

Can I play? Smile

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 17/06/2019 14:24

Brilliant : )

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 17/06/2019 14:31

Interesting. I always thought it would discourage interaction tbh. People will vote rather than engage and discuss.

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 17/06/2019 14:31

YES!

Thank you for trying it, I hope it works, what a great idea.

chuttypicks · 17/06/2019 14:31

Sounds great! Just what is needed, yay!!

Crustaceans · 17/06/2019 14:37

It might just stop 487 people all posting exactly the same reply though.

OneFootintheRave · 17/06/2019 14:41

I would definitely use this function on occasion.

zukiecat · 17/06/2019 14:41

Sounds great

Hope it works

KatherineJaneway · 17/06/2019 14:42

Sounds great!

LenoVentura · 17/06/2019 14:43

Of all the things needed to give this site better functionality you choose this? Confused. How bizarre.

LadyLindaT · 17/06/2019 14:44

Sounds like a good idea.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/06/2019 14:46

ooooh I've got it! Gonna see how it works....

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 17/06/2019 14:47

Yanbu! This sounds cool

honeygirlz · 17/06/2019 14:48

Hmm not sure. Sounds like the vote down button will be used by bullies to drown out voices and cliquey posters will use it down vote dissenting voices.

CollaterlieSistersSister · 17/06/2019 14:49

Perhaps a third option of “this isn’t an AIBU”.

Anything to get rid of the annoying ‘posting for traffic’ stuff that doesn’t belong there.

SouthWestmom · 17/06/2019 14:49

Will posters be required to comment or will someone struggling just see a whole tide of opinion against them?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 17/06/2019 14:52

Interesting. I always thought it would discourage interaction tbh. People will vote rather than engage and discuss.

That was my thought too, why would someone post to say they thought the OP was being unreasonable or not when they could click a button and move onto another thread.

Surely there are lots of other changes the site could make before introducing something so unnecessary?

Circe32 · 17/06/2019 15:00

Sounds great! Could we also have emoticons as per other social media, such as 'like', 'laugh', 'sad face' that we could attach to specific posts?

Bufferingkisses · 17/06/2019 15:00

People like the sound of their voices though (particularly on AIBU). If they open a thread, read an OP and form an opinion then they will want to say their bit even if they have pressed a vote button (and it's already been said 95 times).

MissEliza · 17/06/2019 15:01

@Bufferingkisses that is very true.

WhiteDust · 17/06/2019 15:02

Buzz Where is it? I don't think I have it 😭

GiggleMcDimples · 17/06/2019 15:10

Ooooh exciting!!!! GrinGrinGrin

TheCanterburyWhales · 17/06/2019 15:13

So effectively the "like" button in all but name.
This is going to go well.

SoupDragon · 17/06/2019 15:14

Oh FFS. How to make MN look thick in one easy step.

SilverySurfer · 17/06/2019 15:16

Ah so this is what Tech Team have been doing instead of fixing what we already have, ie Advanced Search doesn't work properly and there has been an ongoing thread about it on Site matters for eighteen months with many promises but still not fixed.

Digital Spy Forums used to have thumbs up/down until the whiners whined enough and they removed the thumbs down button which leaves thumbs up meaningless.
