MASSIVE ADS halfway down the thread page

SinisterBumFacedCat · 10/06/2019 13:33

I don’t know if this is a new thing, i’m sure it’s been done before and wasn’t popular. There are massive ads halfway down the page of threads, it’s very disruptive to the flow and also makes me think it’s the end of the thread. On one thread there was a ad placed straight after the OPs first post, making it appear that there are no other posts on the thread. I am logged in.

OP posts:

Hi @SinisterBumFacedCat, thanks for your feedback. You're right, we have tinkered about with the rules for where ads appear within a thread for mobile users. Ads have always appeared within threads for logged in users, but the rules for where those ads appeared was different. For example, if you were logged in and reading a particularly long thread you would have seen an ad after the 12th post. We received feedback to say this was jarring to user experience as often users thought the thread had finished at 12 posts and didn't read beyond it. We reworked these rules and immediately after the OP felt like a good place, as before you go into a thread you have generally seen how many replies there are to know whether to read beyond the OP or not.

We have also changed the rules for logged out users too, but for logged in users we try to keep the number of ads to the bare minimum.

SillyMoomin · 10/06/2019 16:17

Personally I find it really jarring after the 1st initial OP post but maybe I’m in the minority

Was using the mobile site quite happily till this morning when suddenly I keep thinking the OP is the only post

SparklyMagpie · 10/06/2019 16:22

I think that's even worse!

I've gone off about 3 threads today as I hadn't noticed the posts were after the ads.

Tbh this feels like it's going downhill with all the rubbish adds and pop ups for weeks

hugoagogo · 10/06/2019 16:22

Jeepers this thread has 3 posts and 2 moving ads!
It makes it hard to find the contentSad

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/06/2019 16:23

They are annoying but not as annoying as the adverts which suddenly blare out sound and can't be stopped. Tbf it has only been one advert that has done this, I couldn't tell you what they were advertising as I had to leave the thread to get rid of it.

hugoagogo · 10/06/2019 16:24

Oh wait, there's a little ad at the top as well.

ArthurMc · 10/06/2019 16:41

Having same issues.

StoorieHoose · 10/06/2019 16:43

There is really no need to see the same advert at the top middle and bottom of every thread. All it does is make me more determined not to click on one of the fecking adverts

Redglitter · 10/06/2019 16:44

So instead of one irritating ad per page we now have it twice - great

IWantMyHatBack · 10/06/2019 16:51

It's horrible! Please change it back

scaredofthecity · 10/06/2019 17:22

Please get rid of them! It is incredibly annoying and will put people off.

Surely there are better ways of raising revenue?...

BillywigSting · 10/06/2019 17:27

I agree with pp it's really crap.

It interferes with the flow, makes the page take forever to load, makes it look like the end of the thread when it isn't.

Ads at the very top are fine and not intrusive. As are ads at the very bottom.

This lets put a horrible massive flashy ad right in the middle of the thread is not on.

Get it sorted mnhq.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 10/06/2019 17:39

I think this means my Ad blocker is coming back. I've been debating it for a few weeks but this is the clincher. The ads are jarring and since they're moving ads they use more data allowance.

BillywigSting · 10/06/2019 17:46

Agree with FormerlyFrikadela01 the fact that they're moving too feels like a kick in the teeth.

We're going to cost you a fortune in extra data to disrupt the site and make a bit of extra cash, despite doing exactly this a short while ago and having to pack it in because of the backlash.

Soubriquet · 10/06/2019 17:50

Hate it Angry

It’s very distracting and makes you think the thread is finished when it isn’t

SmallPinkBear · 10/06/2019 17:52

I thought it was something wrong with my browser. I hate it straight after the OP

SparklyMagpie · 10/06/2019 17:57

For those who use an ad blocker, can you recommend me a decent one?

somewheresorted · 10/06/2019 18:22

How annoying is this!!

Please change it back!

Redglitter · 10/06/2019 18:28

Adblocker never crossed my mind. Now have one installed 😊

hugoagogo · 10/06/2019 18:37

It's really out of control now. I couldn't even fit all the ads on my screen just now, 6 in a row!
What's the name of that adblocker?

SoftBlocks · 10/06/2019 18:39

Same issue here.

DonPablo · 10/06/2019 18:42

An ad blocker you say? Off to investigate!

PortiaCastis · 10/06/2019 18:58

Hate it especially after the OP

IWantMyHatBack · 10/06/2019 19:02

Hmm screenshot has vanished from my post.. Weird.

Pipandmum · 10/06/2019 19:02

Also have to say I sometimes see an ad and think ‘that looks nice’ but it may be a company I’ve never heard of (mainly clothes). I’ll google them and inevitably they rate one star on trustpilot and are rip off stores from abroad.
