Managing your cookie preferences

JanineMumsnet · 27/09/2018 13:47

Hi all

A quick heads up that, starting today, we're trialling some tech that will enable users to manage their cookie preferences.
This approach is considered best practice: giving people more control, and aligning with GDPR and the recently updated Data Protection Act.
And we have tried to make it not too annoying, but apologies in advance for any interruption to your browsing -- as ever, it's a balancing act.

Initially, we're rolling it out in our editorial sections, so you won't see it across Talk.

Here's how it should work:

  1. The first time you visit a Mumsnet editorial page you should see a pop up along the bottom of the screen. You can choose to accept all cookies, by clicking ‘I Agree’, or you can manage your individual preferences by clicking ‘show purposes’.
  2. At the bottom right hand side of the Privacy Policy page you should see a settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen which says ‘Privacy settings’. If you click on this, a pop up should appear at the bottom of the screen. Here you can manage all your individual cookie preferences.

Thanks all - please do let us know your feedback.

Firefox have also run a couple of updates this week so making sure those are installed could be a fix.

JanineMumsnet · 09/10/2018 11:16

Just an update on the cookie preferences pop-up. We had to take this down for a few days while we fixed some issues we had identified.

We have now put the pop up back on site again within our editorial sections to test for the next 24 hours.

As ever, if you have any feedback please let us know.

We are still looking into the issue of ad blockers making pop up reappear and I will keep you updated with any further information I receive regarding this.

Hi all,

Just another update to say the cookie preferences pop up should now be appearing across the entire site. As ever, if there are any issues, please let us know.

I haven't seen it yet. I'm on ipad, safari, with Adblock plus installed.

MsMotherOfDragons · 11/10/2018 18:45

I would like oatmeal and raisin ones, but unfortunately that isn't what this thread is about Sad

Pixel99 · 11/10/2018 19:22

Put post on the wrong thread! I thought this was about the cookies you eat!

6SpringCats · 11/10/2018 19:41

Im so sad i thoightbthisxwas a thread about real cookies. Triple chocolate for me please

tigercub50 · 11/10/2018 23:29

Beaten to it - I was going to say double choc please!

GoldilocksAndTheThreePears · 12/10/2018 06:59

I'm getting the cookie preference pop up every page multiple times, if I click to reply to a post it pops up, if I minimise the browser to do other things it pops back up. Every thread I open or go to the next page, or refresh. I thought it was just me as I recently had to move from Chrome to Firefox as Chrome was using so much memory or cpu or whatever, I was unable to do anything. I did add an adblock though.

JanineMumsnet · 12/10/2018 08:20

Hi @GoldilocksAndTheThreePears thanks for your feedback, are you using ad blockers at all?

Some ad blockers interfere with the way these cookie preference pop ups work and therefore it means the pop up will keep reappearing because there's no way of recording which option you chose. If that is the case it may help to exclude Mumsnet from your ad blocker.

I am investigating with Quantcast exactly which ad blockers are causing the issues.

@MsMotherOfDragons @tigercub50 @6SpringCats sorry to have piqued your interest unnecessarily! Grin Grin If only it was about actual cookies? Belgian white choc for me!

im getting them every time i click a thread, dont thnk im using addblocker

bruffin · 12/10/2018 14:57

ive checked on my chrome settings and i dont have adblocker or popups on

Becca19962014 · 12/10/2018 18:37

I had it yesterday and some preferences it refused to let me change stating they're essential if I want access. It also took up half my screen and I had to scroll to the right to get to see the details.

As far as I'm aware I should be allowed to opt out of what I want to, not, as happened, be told I've not choice but to accept your cookies for ads and be part of research you want to conduct - aside from anything else I very often click by mistake on threads/ads because of my disability.

The whole point of permissions was so those who wanted to refuse could, not, to be told tough you must accept or no access. My security is set high for a reason.

Becca19962014 · 12/10/2018 18:38

And yes I keep getting it. I'm not going to lower permissions on this site given security issues you've had in the past.

Abeautifulpeagreenboat · 12/10/2018 18:57

I'd like to know whether the 'required' cookies are required just to make the site function for the user or, as it appears, they are there in order for Mumsnet to collect other data on our devices and to target advertising. I'm asking because the latter certainly isn't my definition of'required'and I haven't encountered it on other sites.

Becca19962014 · 12/10/2018 20:34

The one I saw was essential was data gathering for a company (not MN) and targeting ads.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 12/10/2018 22:48

I installed ad-blocker specifically because of intrusive ads on Mumsnet which made reading it impossible. You didn't listen to feedback on that so the ad-blocker stayed on. Sounds like this is an attempt to make people switch it off.

Your security breaches do not incline me to allow you unfettered access to the contents on my browsing.

Why should we allow you to track us across the web? It is intrusive.

Pebblesandfriends · 12/10/2018 22:55

I find ( in general) if I opt out of certain things I have to re-consent every time, if I 'accept' I am left alone Angry not really in the spirit of gdpr....

Back to pop ups on every page when not signed in, firefox for android with ad blocker and antivirus. Shambolic.

JessicaJonesJacket · 13/10/2018 13:46

I'm not getting it on the mobile site. I did get it on Chrome last night. It was very intrusive - covering most of the screen - and as a PP said the definition of 'required' was much more extensive than other sites. I thought it was a hack tbh.

FoofFighter · 14/10/2018 20:12

This cookies thing is doing my head in today, every time I jump to a different thread it comes up again despite me clicking agree etc Angry

JanineMumsnet · 15/10/2018 10:35

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback. I will need to do a bit more digging to respond to some queries, so if I haven't replied to you below, please don't think I've forgotten you. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

@bruffin that shouldn't be happening, so you have any more detail about your device and browser? Are you on mobile, tablet, desktop? What OS are you using? Which browser do you use? I see you say Chrome, is this also happening if you use a different browser?

@FoofFighter we're really sorry about this. Just to check, are you using an ad blocker? If not, could you let me know a bit more detail about your device, OS and browser so I can do a bit more digging into the problem for you?

@WomanDictionaryDefined we're really sorry about this, it must be really irritating! But are you saying this is only when you're logged out? This really shouldn't be happening. We know that ad blockers do interfere with the consent pop up working properly, but this shouldn't change if you are logged in. Have you tried whitelisting us to see if this helps?

@JessicaJonesJacket Sorry to hear you find the pop up intrusive, but this is deliberate. This is to ensure all users of the site make a definite decision to consent or not to 3rd party cookies. We chose the Quantcast pop up because this is the most widely adopted one across the web at the moment. It is concerning that you haven't seen the pop up on mobile. I will look into this for you.

Thanks

MNHQ

janine when I looked at the details on the popup I had I had no choice but to consent partially if I wanted to continue using MN. It wouldn't let me say no - it said it was essential for the third party you use to track what I am looking at, which I do not believe is what GDPR is about (I could be wrong!), even if it is supposedly anonymised.

The other things I could say no to, but, that was labelled "essential".
