Could you explain the deletions for calling out racism please?

Some, but not all perhaps harshly worded, but how else do you say racism is shit? I am talking about the deletions on the thread about the golliwog mugs.

The inconsistency is in part explained, as always, because they respond to reports they don't monitor the entire thread. So if a "fuck off" comment happens not to be reported then they won't even look at it. I imagine that if a lot of delicate flowers report a "shrug" or "yawn" or "lighten up" comment then they might delete it just because they've had a number of reports.

That and the fact that the mods don't really seem to have consistent guidelines to adhere to Grin.

SophieLMumsnet · 11/05/2018 17:07

Hi all,

We're sorry some of you feel we're inconsistent in our deletions. The reports we receive vary hugely, and each one has it's own set of individual circumstances that we need take into consideration, so we appreciate it can appear that way sometimes.

We do have guidelines that we follow - and we are constantly in communication as a team to try and make sure we're as consistent as we possibly can be. We don't always get it right, and when we don't - we strive to hold our hands up, learn from it, and try to do better next time.

If you ever have concerns about a particular decision we've made then please do report to us or mail in at [email protected] and we'll always do our best to explain where we're coming from.

Sophie - "We do have guidelines that we follow - and we are constantly in communication as a team to try and make sure we're as consistent as we possibly can be. "

What exactly are those guidelines? Please share them with us so we also know which posts are likely to be deleted and which are not.

@Sophielmumsnet

I don't think any of us are pretending modding is an easy job on any moderated group. Nor does anyone expect perfect consistency or clarity on every occasion (unless they have no clue about what is involved).

But where bigotry threads are involved the TG seem to work against the group discriminated against by being invoked to delete challenges whilst leaving propaganda standing.

As an example I would cite the "train seat" thread. There is a post on that thread where a poster claims to have given up a seat for a disabled person who was faking it. They spoke to a guard who confirmed people commonly fake it to get seats without booking (its actually cheaper to book a seat than buy a walking stick to fake it).

I've heard that story and variants of it on other groups, sufficiently often that I don't believe it.

So I can report that post:

  • You can't prove its a pack of lies, unless the PP is a PBP or on some sort of warning you are unlikely to delete it.
  • If I tell the PP "bollocks" I get deleted for breaking TG
  • If I say on thread that I think its a pack of lies one of our resident whiny knickers will start shouting "miss miss, C8 is troll hunting".

At the end of it I'm left as a disabled person, watching propaganda which does make my life more difficult left to stand whilst being powerless to challenge it effectively.

Dog whistle politics and propaganda are popular because they work and are hard to challenge. If you cannot take them down I think we should at least be able to doubt the veracity on thread.

Any other option is ensuring bigots retain all the advantages.

If you want us all to be pedantic your question was answered yesterday at 15.53.

Nope. At 15.53 yesterday I was told it would be answered (and was told the same in email).

When being a pedant its a good idea to read more carefully.

"there are 'whiny arses' who dish it, but can't take it."

Ain't that the truth. Like the person who reported and got deleted my post on that same thread that was only saying "Let's play nice, Janey. If I answer in kind, you'll just go crying to MNHQ" Smile

Now, who could that possibly have been? Life is full of mysteries.

C8H10N4O2 · 11/05/2018 23:49

"Whiny knickers" dear, not "whiny arses".

If you are going to misrepresent someone do at least read the words.

But thanks Janey again. This thread was raised, in site stuff, about the numerous threads on MN which tell people in various shat upon groups that we don't belong on MN.

Thank you for reminding us that we need to lighten up and making it all about you.
Next time some arse tells me I'm a "bloody benefits " because I'm slow getting on a train in the rush hour or similar your words will help me be all zen like and accept my place in life. I will instead divert my thoughts to real problems like people being deleted on MN for saying "lighten up".

That session of finishing off at the Katie Hopkins charm school plainly was not wasted on you.

@Perfectpair the OP of this thread said that in response to someone listing swearwords from a colouring book on a different forum. The OP immediately afterwards said she wasn't aware of the origin of this word. She has never used it herself.

@Perfectpair isn't it considered bad form to target a poster on different forums? I thought MNHQ didn't approve of arguments being brought over from the 'other place'

Read my post, Jane, I didn't know the word's origin, and never used it.

Isn’t that the point, that people can accept and learn from that rather than deny the existence of prejudice in the first place?

BertrandRussell · 13/05/2018 09:48

“Do you need to know the origin to know 'f*tard' is not a 'good word'

Why are you censoring “fuck” not ”tard”? Surely ”tard” is the offensive bit?
