Abandoning the policy of responding to all reports was a mistake I think.

It's quite startling to read today that @thefirstmrsdv and @maryz have both given up reporting or lost faith in the report system.

I believe ALL reports used to receive a response of some sort? I know there was a bit of uproar when that changed.

I'm thinking that maybe going back to the old way might result in more dialogue and more people willing to report generally ( ?)

Thank you LineRunner . I have a lot to learn ...

SpeckledyHen · 06/08/2017 18:21

Including how to bold it seems :)

I have to add that con artists can be very convincing even to professionals. Sometimes sadly they are going to get away with it until they finally do something that can't be construed any other way. It's a very grey area until you have irrefutable evidence. Human nature is to want to believe the best in people, innocent until proven guilty etc. If a thread continues to get more reports then maybe these should be investigated by a different moderator so they can double check their conclusions.

LineRunner · 06/08/2017 18:23

I'm good, thanks, Maryz. I was thinking that people like you, me, Serf, HoneyD, HighAlert, and very many others, are actually a bit of a free resource for MN. We do tend to know when something's not quite right.

ScrambledSmegs · 06/08/2017 18:26

Ah

Well FFS, it was so bloody obvious. And you're telling me that MN told people off for reporting suspicious posting? Someone needs to activate their common sense chip.

scaryclown · 06/08/2017 18:28

Did they ever say 'we know you reported this because you were losing the argument and wanted out' higher power'to wade in on your side, or 'we know you only reported this because you were told to in a pm'

HighAlert · 06/08/2017 18:30

I've been reported loads apparently. so someone must still be doing lots of reporting Grin

Maryz. You're not leaving me again. It's not on. If you go this time I'm making you use the facebooks. I mean it. Even if I'm your only friend. No options.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 06/08/2017 18:47

Is it just me wondering what would happen if nothing at all ever was deleted or moderated in a manner other that self moderation. Would it descend into complete carnage? Would it even itself out in the end? Would people change the way they posted if everything they said was still visible? Would people spot trolls and avoid quicker?

I know it could be dangerous on the legal grounds but still it would be an interesting social experiment.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 06/08/2017 18:48

Grin dear lord Honey what did MaryZ ever do to earn that potential torture? I thought you two were friends Shock

She's on a sticky wicket. I still have abandonment issues.

HoneyDragon · 06/08/2017 19:02

Although as Mnet are systematically banning all my friends on here for asking pertinent questions I suspect my days are numbered anyway.

I cant see that it matters. I report anything that breaks the rules and thats that (member since 2012). I dont need a response.

daisychain01 · 06/08/2017 19:05

We are not allowed to self-moderate

The trouble with being allowed to police the threads ourselves is that there will always be people who tear the arse out of it (we already see the damaging effects of carnage regularly on AIBU) and then there's mayhem. And it could be to a genuine MNer who just isn't great at expressing themselves or who genuinely get their facts wrong (as opposed to making stuff up)

It genuinely seems like an intractable, unsolveable rubicks cube. It's MNHQs site, they own and manage it, they do need to come to a policy decision that stops this stuff happening every few months. It will involve them sticking their neck out a lot more than they have, but if they don't it will spell the end of this site, sorry to be a doom and gloom merchant, but it will be unviable over the long term.

It could, for example have advertisers ( their source of revenue) pulling out because they don't want to be associated with a site that attracts too much controversy and negativity.
