Abandoning the policy of responding to all reports was a mistake I think.

It's quite startling to read today that @thefirstmrsdv and @maryz have both given up reporting or lost faith in the report system.

I believe ALL reports used to receive a response of some sort? I know there was a bit of uproar when that changed.

I'm thinking that maybe going back to the old way might result in more dialogue and more people willing to report generally ( ?)

Bad publicity though - you're overestimating how much mumsnet is actually talked about away from here, excepting tabloids dredging for stories.

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 06/08/2017 17:26

It's more about knowing someone at HQ have caught your drift. So that you can clarify if you clearly haven't explained properly or make follow up points. Dialogue.

Exactly, Serf

Ciaovenora · 06/08/2017 17:28

Obviously Davidgate has created unprecedented amounts of traffic.

What was the outcome, his threads were available up to last night.

Maybe the Fail will do one of their infamous campaigns "Save Mumsnet" because it's their primary source of news nowadays Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/08/2017 17:31

Agree about the dialogue SerfTerf

I certainly don't report anywhere near as much as I used to. Feels like shouting into a void sometimes.

Although sometimes MNHQers do respond. Certainly DawnMN has over D&Cgate.

ConstanceCraving · 06/08/2017 17:32

I'm quite curious to why the Fail's have been so quiet over this.

ConstanceCraving · 06/08/2017 17:33

Fail even.

Demander · 06/08/2017 17:33

Who is reporting what no for what purpose please?

blankface · 06/08/2017 17:36

Are all the mods paid by MN, or are they volunteers?

There's a huge difference in having to write 200 replies to reports if you're being paid for it, or just to record the reports and pass the concern higher up the chain if you're a volunteer.

This is a huge site, how many reports do MN receive in an average day I wonder?

Those of you who would like a response to a report - why? Surely it doesn't matter, further action if any is MN's responsibility, they don't need to let people know individually what they are doing all the time.

The forums are free to use and as such, the users abide by the owners' rules, this is often explained when joining. If you want individual responses I'd suggest the only way to fund that is to charge for the use of MN. Not a popular option I know.

picklemepopcorn · 06/08/2017 17:37

A long running thread may have been a scammer trying to raise cash, and an emotional vampire.

People reported it from an early point but MN appeared to verify it and allow it to stand. It's now gone a bit wild.

user1498911589 · 06/08/2017 17:38

It costs money to reply - it takes time and more time means more staff and therefore more money. MNHQ is presumably cost cutting until they sell more stories to the Mail

mummytime · 06/08/2017 17:38

I've reported several posts recently - and it is disconcerting to not get any kind of response. And I'm sure its not as long as 2 years since I last got one.
A response helps us know if we are: over reacting or reporting really "dodgy" posts. I can cope when its advertising etc. But some of the spidery senses ones would be nice - it is also the fact that for all anyone reporting knows the system could be broken if they don't even receive a generic "got it" message.

picklemepopcorn · 06/08/2017 17:38

Strangely, due to volume, the more controversial and intense the thread the less likely they are to respond personally, and the more likely you are to want a response.

picklemepopcorn · 06/08/2017 17:39

I've had responses this year. Not to every post I've reported, but to some.

megletthesecond · 06/08/2017 17:39

I report even so often but literally never check my MN email account so I have no idea if I even get replies. Sorry if MNHQ are emailing me Blush.

HighAlert · 06/08/2017 17:40

I think MN makes enough money from it's advertisers to pay their moderators. I'd be surprised if a business as big as MN used volunteer Mods. Although the Nightwatch are volunteers I believe.

PelorusJack · 06/08/2017 17:40

I report a lot and am not bothered about not receiving a reply. I try and only report once per dodge you thread but sometimes I'll report again if there is a particularly ridiculous 'update'. I sometimes apologise for a duplicate report. I'm never rude and I never say that I know someone is a troll. I'd be very suprised if posters are being banned for over reporting. I'd have thought it more likely that posters are being banned for being rude on or off threads. I don't know though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Regardless of the issue with getting feedback to reports I think i report less because I have less confidence that troll threads will be deleted. MNHQ can only go on the info they have and I understand they can't delete threads just because they sound fake. I don't think it's MNHQs fault but it does seem a bit pointless reporting sometimes.

BTW. I still get feedback from some of my replies. The same chatty style as we used to get. Sometimes saying they are deleting the thread and sometimes saying the OP is ok or is being watched. They always say that I should keep reporting.

I really find trolls annoying -even the ones who just exaggerate for effect. I don't get angry or upset by what they do I just find them deeply boring.

Ciaovenora · 06/08/2017 17:41

My understanding is that they are all paid although at night they have volunteers who pull threads till the morning when paid employees make final decisions they could pay employee's to work night thus far they have decided against it.

HighAlert · 06/08/2017 17:42

I never report troll threads any more. I've seen too many left to stand, so think there is no point reporting.

Ciaovenora · 06/08/2017 17:47

The Mail pays no-one for stories they piss everyone off for taking content they don't own. The Huff post is no different they only way to stop content being used would be to have a pay wall, I suspect no-one would pay to use this site.

SerfTerf · 06/08/2017 17:49

I've not long realised my MN a/c isn't connected to my main email a/c Grin

OP posts:
PelorusJack · 06/08/2017 17:50

I think everyone should report if they think a thread is a troll thread. It literally takes seconds and surely the more reports a thread gets the more likely MNHQ will look at it.
I report even when I'm not sure a thread is a troll thread. MNHQ can access more info than me so I leave it to them. i don't give it much thought ...

mrsRosaPimento · 06/08/2017 17:51

I think this situation was made worse by sock puppets verifying an op. Then MNHQ verifying it was true, and moving a JustGiving page to charity board gave it credibility. I'm really pissed off that MNHQ keep deleting threads without giving any answers.
What's the point of us reporting when it's ignored?

SerfTerf · 06/08/2017 17:51

This is the thing @HighAlert.

I've been questioning myself about whether I've been reporting enough.

OP posts:
daisychain01 · 06/08/2017 17:51

The "wack-a-mole" phenomenon keeps springing to mind.

Being a MNHQ moderator must mean they are given time off for work-related stress nowadays
