Abandoning the policy of responding to all reports was a mistake I think.

It's quite startling to read today that @thefirstmrsdv and @maryz have both given up reporting or lost faith in the report system.

I believe ALL reports used to receive a response of some sort? I know there was a bit of uproar when that changed.

I'm thinking that maybe going back to the old way might result in more dialogue and more people willing to report generally ( ?)

Please let's not go the TAAT route again.

I know it's tempting Smile

I can't say I've noticed not getting responses. In fact looking back I've had responses to all of my recent reports - which isn't many because I tend to steer clear of controversial threads. Report once and then bugger off, that's my motto.

I have more concerns about the other stuff MrsDV mentioned, which is news to me and quite surprising.

PelorusJack · 06/08/2017 17:53

I know everyone would like more answers from MNHQ but it's acSunday and it August. My bet is that they are waiting until Monday morning when more people are in the office.

KatherineMumsnet · 06/08/2017 17:55

Thanks for the feedback, everyone - this is just to say we've heard you; we're going to discuss this in the office next week and we'll update as soon as we can.

HighAlert · 06/08/2017 17:55

Someone said on another thread they had reported a dodgy thread and had a reply telling them to stop troll hunting. So you can't win really.

PurpleDaisies · 06/08/2017 17:56

Someone said on another thread they had reported a dodgy thread and had a reply telling them to stop troll hunting

But hadn't they voiced their suspicions on the thread? I report lots and have never been told off for troll hunting.

ImperialBlether · 06/08/2017 17:56

I'd be surprised if a business as big as MN used volunteer Mods. Although the Nightwatch are volunteers I believe.

This doesn't make any sense!

Polter · 06/08/2017 17:57

The problem with report and hide is that you then have no way of knowing if you were right or not, which does help refine troll-spotting skills, and mean you're less likely to be hoodwinked. Having said that, at the moment I find it hard to believe anyone on here unless they're very established posters or I know them personally.

HoneyDragon · 06/08/2017 17:57

I wrote a op in site stuff last week saying I am no longer reporting at all. I'm disgusted with it all. I'm appalled at the posters they have booted for questioned them and appalled at the ones other letvstay to continue abusing people.

I got a response from MNHQ that was not wanted the basically confirmed what I knew that they dngaf.

ImperialBlether · 06/08/2017 17:58

I don't think we always need a reply. I think if you write something in depth then it would be worth a reply - eg if a nurse/doctor recognised something was wrong with a thread where the poster was claiming they were ill, then I think MN should reply.

If I report a post saying "This poster's just out to cause trouble," then I don't need a reply.

ScrambledSmegs · 06/08/2017 17:59

Someone said on another thread they had reported a dodgy thread and had a reply telling them to stop troll hunting.

That can't be the whole story, it just doesn't follow Shock

That's what they said on the thread. I have no idea if it's true or not.

SpeckledyHen · 06/08/2017 18:01

Stupid question - what is a sock puppet please ?

MargotsDevil · 06/08/2017 18:01

@KatherineMumsnet can you advise whether you (or someone else at HQ) responded to my initial point on the deleted thread thread before it came down? That for app users you need to put some sort of holding post up rather than just "thread deleted". There were several good suggestions made in amongst the TAAT debate!

SerfTerf · 06/08/2017 18:02

Thanks @KatherineMumsnet

Katherine. I reported last week and you (and it was you) replied and told me to feel free to make my thoughts known on the thread but that you would not be removing it.

Wouldmthat not have been construed as troll hunting, since I was reporting to I did not believe the op?

Mychildcouldnotbreaatfeed · 06/08/2017 18:03

Oh my god my typing is woeful.

@katherinemumsnet to my previous post

We won't get more than that on a Sunday.

OP posts:
ConstanceCraving · 06/08/2017 18:10

You're not wrong Maryz but for whatever their reasons MN believe their stance is the right one. And if they don't like or agree with us they can and do shut us down.

I don't understand their reasoning because to me, you and seemingly hundreds of other posters when something is amiss it's glaringly obvious and you'd think HQ would see it to so it's very frustrating to be told that " everything checks out behind the scenes " not a lot we can do!

MarshmallowNougat · 06/08/2017 18:13

No sense of urgency in that post katherinemumsnet, mumsnet has been like a slow car crash this weekend.

Is it true that if more investigation was done a few months ago (the revelations on the thread running during yesterday) then the wife terminally ill threads would have been pulled then?

nachogazpacho · 06/08/2017 18:14

I don't expect a reply if I report stuff. But if I wanted one I'd ask for it and think that should be honoured. I've never reported when I think someone is a troll. I've only ever reported when I worry about someones safety. If I carried on worrying I'd likely re report and ask for a reply. That's similar to whistle blowing policy where I work. You can ask for a response regarding what action is being taken and they have to respond. It doesn't mean you get an automatic response, but if you ask for one you should.

This latest issue would not put me off reporting either. Also, what are mnhq responsible for? Where is the line? Surely they can't be responsible for the behaviour. They can only be responsible for repeating guidelines, checking out potential con artists and banning those that seriously break the rules. They can't be responsible for all of our behaviour. Not sure if that's making sense but what I'm trying to say is some circumstances that arise are going to be upsetting and these things never end satisfactorily even if all the procedures are followed because the nasty thing still happened in the first place and the person doing that is ultimately responsible for it, not mnhq or other users.

So as an online community we should be able to report and request a response and keep an eye out for eachother, but we can't blame mnhq if they follow procedures but horrible stuff still happens.

LineRunner · 06/08/2017 18:14

SpeckledyHen, a sock puppet is e.g. a troll who name-changes mid thread in order to agree with themselves.

Hi everyone. Been a while.
