Deleting whole threads

Northernlurker · 31/03/2017 18:07

I've been here for ten years now (dd3 10th birthday approaching)

When I started posting threads were hardly ever deleted. Sometimes people would ask for them to go and they were nearly always told to get a grip. This had a very positive effect on posting behaviour because it just wasn't possible to talk a load of bollocks on a thread and not have it come up to bite you later. It dealt with a lot of posters who would otherwise have time wasted.

That principle seems to have totally disappeared now. Threads are deleted all the time ' to protect privacy' when what seems to be meant is to protect the posters blushes because they've had their arse handed to them on a plate. Some posters in particular are getting threads, which people have spent time and energy answering, deleted repeatedly.

This is a website for adults and I think we all need to behave like adults. That means sticking by our comments. Could we try a no thread deletion policy for a bit? Threads with rl names could have those posts deleted but the threads still stand. Might encourage better posting behaviour.

I bet Sookie wished she could delete her own thread in OTBT when she woke up hungover this morning Grin

Saucery · 01/04/2017 11:04

On the offchance that a poster is real MNHQ really can't take the chance that they are being hounded across the boards. And starting multiple threads about them is hounding and bullying, however justified you may think you are in trollhunting them to fuck.

PortiaCastis · 01/04/2017 11:07

Hounding and bitching with glee about another poster is just shameful

Saucery · 01/04/2017 11:09

PMing people who agree with you to continue the bitchfest in a part of a site that isn't that secret at all is just pathetic.

Saucery · 01/04/2017 11:10

Yy itaintme. Real bastard behind the eyes or banhammered? Grin

Itaintme · 01/04/2017 11:11

You have to wonder why they thought that this was the way to behave on MN

It's never been ok to start a thread about another poster.

UnbornMortificado · 01/04/2017 11:11

I don't like some posters and think some story's are dubious. This is in general not poster specific and I agree threads getting pulled for "privacy" is a pita.

Starting a thread about one poster is bullying and pm-ing like minded users is straight up bullying.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2017 11:12

Now this thread is turning into one about a single poster again.

Saucery · 01/04/2017 11:13

It was plainly started as one about a single poster anyway. Surprised it's still here.

ZackyVengeance · 01/04/2017 11:14

back to the question
should mn hq be so quick to delete a thread when it doesn't go the op's way?
I think no

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2017 11:14

It's turning into a thread about another.

OlennasWimple · 01/04/2017 11:16

More posters and fewer threads should be deleted

Saucery · 01/04/2017 11:16

I think in the current climate of journos and bullying arseholes targeting individuals then deleting whatever, whenever, is perfectly fine

ZackyVengeance · 01/04/2017 11:18

then shouldnt mn hq delete threads that get lots of reports? say for being disablist?

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2017 11:19

I wonder if since we stopped getting replies to reports MNHQ have reduced the size of the team that deals with reports. It must save a lot of time. And the few remaining have some new instructions to just delete a thread if someone asks, and just use their personal judgement on everything else.

The journalist thing doesn't bother me. If you don't want it 'out there' don't post it on an open forum where anyone can read.

PurpleDaisies · 01/04/2017 11:19

I don't understand why more posters aren't banned for bullying other posters or troll hunting. There seems to be a stupidly high bar before anything actually gets done.

Starting threads to slag off another poster is surely enough to warrant a suspension?

ZackyVengeance · 01/04/2017 11:20

if they did they wouldn't say

MrsMackenzo · 01/04/2017 11:22

This thread is now being used for the same purposes as the OTBT one, though.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2017 11:22

I agree MrsM.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2017 11:24

I would be interested to know if there has been a drop in reports since MNHQ stopped replying. I don't report nearly as much because I will never know if they have taken a look.

TheFirstMrsDV · 01/04/2017 11:24

This thread is not about one poster.
Of course they are part of why this thread was started but its unfair to insist they are the only reason.

Threads have been going pfft at a rate never seen before for reasons that would not have been enough before.

Universitychallenging · 01/04/2017 11:29

I hate reporting and not knowing if anything is being done. I report but it's like it just goes off into the ether and that is dispiriting. It seems pointless.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2017 11:30

That's how I feel Uni. You just have to assume if the thread/post is still there it's been deemed ok. Confused

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/04/2017 11:31

I agree, MrsDV.

In addition, not only do MNHQ no longer respond to reports, they seem to no longer respond to threads in Site Stuff unless the thread is reported to them.

So, I'm going to report this one to ask for a response to why so many threads are being deleted at posters' requests for no discernible reason other than the poster not liking the way the thread has gone.

MrsMackenzo · 01/04/2017 11:32

If you email HQ as opposed to just hitting 'report thread' you get a response though - at least, from experiences I've had.
