Deleting whole threads

I've been here for ten years now (dd3 10th birthday approaching)

When I started posting threads were hardly ever deleted. Sometimes people would ask for them to go and they were nearly always told to get a grip. This had a very positive effect on posting behaviour because it just wasn't possible to talk a load of bollocks on a thread and not have it come up to bite you later. It dealt with a lot of posters who would otherwise have time wasted.

That principle seems to have totally disappeared now. Threads are deleted all the time ' to protect privacy' when what seems to be meant is to protect the posters blushes because they've had their arse handed to them on a plate. Some posters in particular are getting threads, which people have spent time and energy answering, deleted repeatedly.

This is a website for adults and I think we all need to behave like adults. That means sticking by our comments. Could we try a no thread deletion policy for a bit? Threads with rl names could have those posts deleted but the threads still stand. Might encourage better posting behaviour.

There has been a noticeable shift towards deleting compared to when I joined.

I replied to a thread last year, I assume the OP took exception and MNHQ deleted it at OP's request. I was the only one to post on it and I'm sure I was polite. It wasn't identifying, no talk guidelines broken. I avoid that topic now (not AIBU where it's more expected threads will get pulled).

SookiesSocks · 31/03/2017 22:21

What it says is this is a place to receive praise and agreement only. If that's what you want I would suggest netmums.

100% agree

Itaintme · 31/03/2017 22:23

AIBU is a throwaway topic..Full of bollocks and snarking. Who really cares if threads are deleted from there? And let's face it MN is AIBU now.

If we're on the subject of techy site edits, alongside an edit button, I'd love to be able to 'like' or 'dislike' posters' comments.

BillyButtfuck · 31/03/2017 22:24

There is one thread which has really surprised me staying up this week actually. I'm not sure if HQ are trying to make a point by keeping it up as so many posters said it would be taken straight down

ZackyVengeance · 31/03/2017 22:24

I would hate an edit button
Some of the funniest posts are the ones with really bad auto corrects

Philoslothy · 31/03/2017 22:25

I am amazed that the daily Mail has not used the posters threads as some kind of broken Britain article.

MrsMackenzo · 31/03/2017 22:25

Billy ooh, which one?

Itaintme · 31/03/2017 22:27

MN really needs an edit facility. I think it's the only forum on the internet which doesn't trust it's users to use one.

Sparklingbrook · 31/03/2017 22:28

I would hate a Like button. It would just turn MN Talk into the Daily Mail comments section. MN have thankfully said no every time it's been asked for.

MrsMackenzo · 31/03/2017 22:30

Itaintme TES has an edit function but you can only make use of it for up to (I think) ten minutes after you've posted the comment.

sobeyondthehills · 31/03/2017 22:31

I think on some of the forums I would like a like button, I read a post the other day which made me spit out my coffee, it was so funny.

Itaintme · 31/03/2017 22:32

Yes most forums have a timed edit function.it's a pretty standard forum function.

BillyButtfuck · 31/03/2017 22:32

Mrs 20 kids and counting!!
I was sure, like the last one about that family, it would poof and disappear within an hour.

DaisyBlameless · 31/03/2017 22:32

Maybe the answer, philosophy, send the Daily Fail calvery in.

Sparklingbrook · 31/03/2017 22:33

MN isn't like most forums that's the difference. It's good that it isn't.

Philoslothy · 31/03/2017 22:35

Nobody deserves the daily mail. If she is genuine those children have enough on their plates without the Daily Mail spitting hate filled bile about them.

Itaintme · 31/03/2017 22:38

She gets enough bile spouted about her on here.

BillyButtfuck · 31/03/2017 22:57

And another one bits the dust!

BillyButtfuck · 31/03/2017 22:57

Bites Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 31/03/2017 23:01

The one weird thing that MN lets you do that other sites don't is being able to constantly namechange.
I personally believe it causes a lot of the issues.

MrsMackenzo · 31/03/2017 23:03

Is the 20 kids one gone? I couldn't find it Confused

Sparklingbrook · 31/03/2017 23:04

Then there's the thread about Netmums that's still there. Confused

Itaintme · 31/03/2017 23:08

The Netmums threads are tedious. It's like the rival school thing we had going on when we were kids.

SookiesSocks · 31/03/2017 23:08

Anyone see the tracy with the layabout husband thread?
She had an offer of sex from the caller at bingo while her hubby lay on the sofa bettin ont horses.
That was up for 2 days and was deleted for troll hunting Confused OP only posted once!
