Why is Mumsnet insisting that I log in?

CrispEater · 17/08/2016 09:58

I spend quite a lot of time browsing Mumsnet on my Samsung tablet, not logged in. I rarely post anything but if I do, I do that on my PC because I can type quicker on a proper keyboard.
Just now I was in Mumsnet on the tablet and kept getting a pop-up that insists I should either log in or join. As far as I can see, there is no way of getting rid of this pop-up except by logging in or joining or giving up on Mumsnet. It looks very genuine to me.
I really can't be bothered to keep logging in when I only want to browse and I hate being forced into doing something I'd rather not do.
Is there some reason why Mumsnet now wants everyone logged in all the time? Or have I missed something?

But that doesn't fix a major issue highlighted here - like many others have said, I lurked for months before I found the confidence to post on a thread (and joined to do so). If I'd had to join before I could even read a few threads I would never have joined.

In fact, I'm not sure that your proposed "fix" addresses any of the concerns raised, other than "it's a bit inconvenient".

I'm not generally one to join the moaning about how MN used to be better, but I'm really disappointed this time Sad.

PurpleHebe · 18/08/2016 17:53

JessicaMumsnet - Thanks, just tried it again and the pop up seems to have gone

Cantgetmyoldnameback · 18/08/2016 18:14

This change is such a terrible idea. I am permanently logged on, on my iPad, but never usually log on when I'm browsing on my phone or on Orkney computer at lunchtime.

And your recently announced fix doesn't fix anything - for reasons mentioned over and over in this thread, many people will not want to log on, on certain devices, even once, for many reasons, including safety and privacy.

Why can you simply give users the option to click an 'X' button and remove the pop up - and don't show it again!

This is going to put off so many potential joiners if they have to join virtually immediately rather than browse for a good while first.

HighNoon · 18/08/2016 18:18

I have spent last 15 minutes requesting password resets to my multiple possible emails to try and login

Want to tell you, you will kill this site with this fucking login!

It is really, really unhelpful. I have used the site for years and really appreciate reading posts and chipping in WHEN I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY.

Great though the site maybe - you have no divine right to exist - take it off !!

Hrumph, hrumph, hrumph!
Couldn't do any browsing at all, just MADE to sign in....on a plus side I went to bed very early last night as just went "NO I WILL NOT SIGN IN" stamp foot and have toddler tantrum...hmm also know where toddlers get their foot-stamping from Grin
But next time HQ please could you give us the heads up? I was not sure if it was a genuine request from MN or some weird cyber hackers! 🤖

Sagethyme · 18/08/2016 18:36

Arghhhhh it's still doing it! Even on same device. Okay, signing off for a while now till this goes away.... Good way to go ❄️🦃 On MN!

BungoWomble · 18/08/2016 18:39

I logged out after my last post, did other stuff, came back, and... got another pop up. So I don't think the fix is working yet.

I should change my username to 'SickOfBeingTracked' nowadays.

Really annoying! Please make it stop.

BungoWomble · 18/08/2016 18:48

I understand Mumsnet has to make enough money to keep the lights on, but this intrusive data mining is not popular for many of us who are actually aware that it happens.

Perhaps Soma FM could offer an alternative model for mumsnet? somafm.com

3littlerabbits · 18/08/2016 19:11

Also not keen on my viewed threads being logged by mumsnet. I come here often for info and get it from old threads. Why do you need to know what I've been browsing? Annoying annoying and disappointing. Logging out now. I'll try again over the next few days - hopefully this feature will be gone :)

user1471543325 · 18/08/2016 19:25

I'm very unhappy about this. I don't want to log in all the time. I have only logged in now to complain. And it takes FAR too long from my phone.
I don't want to be personalised.

If you persist in this you'll be seeing less of me - and I'll be seeing less of your adds.

user1471543325 · 18/08/2016 19:34

And now you want me to LOG IN AGAIN WHEN I AM ALREADY LOGGED IN. I've done it but just to complain.

FUCK OFF WITH THIS SHIT.

I'm now reduced to doing some housework.

Powaqa · 18/08/2016 19:37

and I still wont be able to browse during my work lunchtime as I cant log in at all never mind just the once

PointlessForcedLogin · 18/08/2016 19:40

For the record I don't want any 'personalisation'. I'm more than capable of deciding what I want to look at and searching for it myself, but thanks for the vote of confidence in my ability to use a search engine anyway.

MrsFogi · 18/08/2016 19:41

I had this so read something else over lunchtime at work. Really annoying, I'm not going to log in just to "lurk" - you'll lose me if you move in this direction mn (and that would make me very sad as I've been around so long that when I first joined I used to be able to read every thread on the site each day).

Moltenpink · 18/08/2016 19:49

Two issues, I don't want to log on when on my phone or at work, ever. Also I really hate anything being personalised, I just want to browse randomly.

LeakyLoftHatch · 18/08/2016 19:49

Another goodbye for now from me.

KickAssAngel · 18/08/2016 19:54

So my devices just started doing this TODAY.

But MN say it's fixed.

I will stop using MN if this continues - and I've been here 13 years, happily paid the 10 quid before they had advertising. (and would happily pay 10 quid a year to get rid of advertising as well).

Aurielia · 18/08/2016 19:56

Hate it too.
I have only posted on here a couple of times, but I've visited this site for years and come on several times a day usually.
If I only have a few minutes I don't want to have to log in or have to delete my history so I can read a thread before the log in box blocks me.
I too thought it was a data hack at first as I keep getting redirected from this site to porn site and messages saying I have a virus. So even though the log in box is genuine, I won't be logging in while I get directed to dodgy sites from here.
Just a simple x on the loggin box would solve this.
If it continues I will rarely visit any more.

oldlaundbooth · 18/08/2016 19:57

You need to include a close button on the pop up, or else people will just go to another website that they can actually access....

oldlaundbooth · 18/08/2016 19:58

It's not fixed, it just happened to me!

sadie9 · 18/08/2016 19:59

Yes, it's a pain I have come to look at stuff and then gone off elsewhere as I can't be arsed to log in every single time. People don't want to stay logged in as then anyone using their computer/tablet or phone can see what I may have posted. And my messages if any, etc.

I cannot express enough annoyance about this!

I will be un-'liking' your Facebook account as every time something I consider reading comes up, it asks me to log in! There is NO NEED for this.
