Why is Mumsnet insisting that I log in?

CrispEater · 17/08/2016 09:58

I spend quite a lot of time browsing Mumsnet on my Samsung tablet, not logged in. I rarely post anything but if I do, I do that on my PC because I can type quicker on a proper keyboard.
Just now I was in Mumsnet on the tablet and kept getting a pop-up that insists I should either log in or join. As far as I can see, there is no way of getting rid of this pop-up except by logging in or joining or giving up on Mumsnet. It looks very genuine to me.
I really can't be bothered to keep logging in when I only want to browse and I hate being forced into doing something I'd rather not do.
Is there some reason why Mumsnet now wants everyone logged in all the time? Or have I missed something?

I browse on a daily basis but rarely log in and post. I REALLY don't like the forced log in and will stop using the site if this becomes a permanent fixture.

ModreB · 18/08/2016 20:40

Ok thanks for the feedback folks - we're about to release a change that means that once you've logged in at least once (per device I think) you won't see the pop up again it again even if you log out.

I DONT want to log in on every device that I have. I log in on my main device, which is safe, and not on other devices that are not necessarily safe, but useful, when looking at threads WITHOUT logging in. Due to personal circumstances, I am very careful about logging in to anything that might be made public, hence my preferred machine being safe.

Why should I have to log in on every device that I have, potentially, in public, that could put me and my family at risk from people for personalised adverts.

I am quite old enough to choose for myself what I want to buy, and when I want to buy it.

I need no assistance. I am quite capable of making my own purchase decisons without being bombarded with adverts, that I automatically delete.

We can cope with the idea of MN as a business that needs revenue. You could just say that instead of that ghastly corporate speak.

It's already personalised enough. mumsnet.com is quite specific. The internet is massive and we've found our ways here, you are better off making sure we stay.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 18/08/2016 20:58

What Modre B said
I have some devices that I log onto mumsnet with and some I dont.

AnniePower · 18/08/2016 21:23

I've only logged in to post this - 48 hours without MN has been the ideal opportunity to broaden my internet browsing horizons and find other (accessible) places of interest to land.

I don't think engendering resentment is a great way to nurture your customers. After the hacking debacle I am amazed that you didn't even warn users that this was going to happen!

littledrummergirl · 18/08/2016 21:35

Slightly off topic but wtf is this ovulation calendar of which you speak? Confused

Is this a thing? How did we manage without it? Grin

I think you've solved the problem of linking from Facebook, not sure what I'm going to do in my lunch hour tomorrow though Sad

Silvereyes · 18/08/2016 21:40

I don't like it, it's time consuming and just makes me look at a different site out of frustration

whathavewedonenow99 · 18/08/2016 21:46

Hate it. Don't want to sign in on my work computer! Rubbish idea.

herebehippos · 18/08/2016 21:48

I was affected by the last hack and de-regged. I recently finally re-registered but only on devices I felt OK with risking exposure to future hacks. As the main way of browse the site is through a source I don't want to ever log in from I shall be off I'm afraid! From your data it will look like a user of less than a month dropping off but actually I've been using mumsnet for 7 years. I also lurked for at least a year before I ever registered. And I have a policy of walking away from any site that expects me to sign up like this- most people my age (early 30s) do. This is a really shitty and annoying thing and it will wreck the site.

SlippersAndPipe · 18/08/2016 21:50

What everyone else said....

Fedupwithchangerightnow · 18/08/2016 22:06

Listen to your people!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/08/2016 22:07

This doesn't really affect me as I am permanently logged in on all my devices. On the rare occasion that I am forced to re-login my username and password are automatically saved so.I don't need to type them in or remember them. It's really not difficult or a hassle, and I suggest that some of you look into password managers to make the internet less stressful.

However, I do not agree with a forced login to view threads. The threads are MNs marketplace, what pulls people in, I know they said people are pulled to MN by their other content but I very much doubt that, I'd bet 99% of traffic comes via threads found in Google. A forced login is effectively stopping people from browsing before they buy.

We are all in here, being passionate on this thread because we found MN, got sucked in and joined up so we can post. Folk aren't going to get sucked in if they have to sign up first!

I have no problem for signing in to be a requirement of enhanced features such as bookmarks/poster highlighting/posting etc, but you have to have the basic functions available for "free" ie without a login.

I would be very interested to see the bounce rate once people hit the forced login - as a PP said, many (most?) people once they hit a page all/email harvester/advert you are required to watch will just click away and go elsewhere.

If you want to get peoples data then you need to provide them with a far superior service if they do, rather than kicking them off the site if they don't.

SalemSaberhagen · 18/08/2016 22:22

Facebook isn't fixed for me.

And also, 2 banners. Massive overkill.

Why is Mumsnet insisting that I log in?
Ffitz · 18/08/2016 22:28

This is 100% about advertising and not 'personalisation'. Sites with logged in users can charge advertisers a lot more, because they have more information about who is viewing the ads - age, gender etc. All websites are on a massive mission to get as many logged in users as possible.

venusandmars · 18/08/2016 22:32

Mumsnet has become more than just an income generating site - it also sets itself as a campaigning organisation and a place where people who are vulnerable (e.g. people experiencing domestic abuse) can find a safe place for support and advice. For many people that starts by lurking and browsing before they have the confidence to post.

I have been a longstanding poster on the bravebabes threads. I doubt I would have posted about my alcohol problem if I hadn't been able to read all the posts for 3 weeks before I registered and tentatively made my first post. Five years later, I barely drink, thanks to the support I got here. I post less often now, but I read the brave babes threads constantly ready to respond if someone needs help.

But I log on and post from my pc, and never on my phone (which other people in my family can use). But I've lost count of the times when I read encouraging posts on my phone and was strengthened in my resolve not to drink.

Please, please remove this pop up, or at least have a way in which people can continue to lurk.

Ironically today I couldn't even read the posts on the site stuff (or at least not beyond the first page) because of the damn log-in box.

AuntieStella · 18/08/2016 22:33

Even though I tend to stay logged in on one device, I find I am MNetting far less these days.

And these sorts of shenanigans leave me cold.

blowmybarnacles · 18/08/2016 22:33

If you make people log in, then my DP might see stuff I post about him seeking advice, if he picks up my ipad or sees my computer for example.

Sometimes I'd rather not log in as then he'll never see the posts I'm on.

I'm not a vulnerable user - this could cause some people huge problems, especially where these is abuse or violence.

Put women's need for privacy first and the advertisers second.

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2016 22:46

Why are some people not happy with MNHQ's compromise?

Log in once, log straight out and then you can lurk without the pop-up.

What's the problem with that? Confused

SalemSaberhagen · 18/08/2016 22:47

When it works Worra. It didn't on mine.

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2016 22:49

I get that Salem but some people for whom it (presumably) will work, still don't seem happy.

It takes two to compromise and all that.

FlumptyDumpty · 18/08/2016 23:33

But Justine WHY do you want us to login once per device? What is the reason for this? What benefits will it bring?

Please come clean.

DPotter · 18/08/2016 23:49

well its 23.44 and Justine's message was at 15.08 and I've had that bloody irritating bouncing box come up in 4 seconds. So whatever it is you thought would happen Justine, hasn't.
I completely agree with other posters about forced log in being
unsafe
off putting to new people
facilitates advertising revenue - at my expense
patronizes my ability to chose to engage with / ignore other aspects of

the site
Time for a radical re-think............

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 18/08/2016 23:54

It means I have to stop mumsnetting at my work computer, as I can't risk logging on from there. So although I only contribute to threads from my home device I do sometime like to check how the threads are going from work, and now I can't:(

user123456 · 18/08/2016 23:58

OK everyone here is how to get around this without signing in get a addblocker, I recommend U-Block Origin and when the pop-up come up right click and block the Element and you never have to see it again.

This also will stop mumsnet and other sites tracking your web viewing habits and will protect you.
