Message from MNHQ: Thanks so much for all the reports about this.

Although there has been some interesting debate and discussion, we do agree that the OP and some of what ensues is disablist, so we have decided to delete.

how can these be interesting debates??
\not long ago mn hq said that they were going to be quicker dealing with this stuff
what happened??

Because if you don't it is very patronising and minimising to tell us we are overstating the offence caused by something.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/08/2016 17:17

I was asking silverchair. Because we were specifically discussing autism.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/08/2016 17:18

I said autism because we were specifically discussing autism, I mean.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/08/2016 17:20

And I asked silverchair because she was saying we were overreacting and overstating the offence caused. So personal experience is very relevant here.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/08/2016 17:26

I wouldn't tell someone black they were overreacting to racism

TheSilverChair · 18/08/2016 17:29

A close relative is an adult with autism, living in sheltered accommodation.

Another relative is a teenager with autism.

I taught in special schools for 20 years. Many students were on the spectrum.

Does that make my opinions more or less valid?

I didn't say anyone was over reacting, please don't ascribe to me something I didn't say. I did say that "hate speech" is a specific crime and I hadn't seen any left to stand. I also said that overstating the case was unhelpful, it's only hate speech in certain conditions, that doesn't necessarily mean it's acceptable.

Telling someone with a child with autism that they are overstating the case re hate soeech/offence about someone saying most kids with autism are just horrible kids, when you don't have one yourself, seems quite patronising and minimising to me, yes

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/08/2016 17:33

I also used child with autism, and won't get into the debate because either have seen people hideously offended by the use of autistic and also seen people hideously offended by the use of child with autism, so I use both, sorry.

BeyondLovesSweetDee · 18/08/2016 17:37

I use both as whichever you use, another autistic person/person with autism will think you are wrong! Grin

I also interchangeable use asd and aspergers when talking about aspergers, which is apparently a crime!!

But then I have an autism diagnosis, so odds are I am just a horrible person...

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/08/2016 17:44

Hate speech is any speech that offends, threatens, or insults group on a prejudicial or discriminatory bases. This includes: race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or disability.

saying "most people with a diagnoses (Of ADHD ASD /ODD) are horrible child, only a miniority have actual disabilities"

Falls well within this law.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/08/2016 17:55

what they are doing is not illegal, hate speech is illegal....

TheSilverChair · 18/08/2016 17:58

Telling someone with a child with autism that they are overstating the case re hate soeech/offence about someone saying most kids with autism are just horrible kids, when you don't have one yourself, seems quite patronising and minimising to me, yes

But no one said that, they said some DCs supposedly with ADHD and ASD were sometimes just horrible kids. That's very unpleasant but it isn't hate speech. Offence and hate speech are not the same thing. I also took it to mean that those she referred to were not diagnosed other than by their parents claiming they had it.

Calling something that is offensive hate speech is overstating the case. I disagree with Jason, there. But neither of us are lawyers so it's a difference of opinion until someone with the qualifications tells us which is correct.

My relatives refer to themselves as people with autism. Until they ask me to change, that's what I shall call them, polter.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/08/2016 18:02

But no one said that, they said some DCs supposedly with ADHD and ASD were sometimes just horrible kids.
NO THEY DIDN'T
THIS IS NOT WHAT WAS SAID

The poster specifically said "most children with a diagnoses are just horrible children, a minority will have a disability."

THIS IS HATE SPEECH!

STOP DISMISSING AND UNPLAYING HATE SPEECH.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/08/2016 18:04

She is saying most children diagnosed with ADHD ADD or ODD are JUST horrible children!!!

there is nothing to argue about. It's horrible.

Stevefromstevenage · 18/08/2016 18:04

TheSilverChair you would have to wonder how the posters who said that could tell the "dancer from the dance" because plenty of what people struggle with ASD and ADHD is the perceived unsocial behaviour which is part of the condition. Very much hate speak in many situations.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/08/2016 18:04

What Jason said.

They said most kids with a diagnosis don't really have it and are just horrible brats.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/08/2016 18:05

But neither of us are lawyers

Prove it.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/08/2016 18:06

Most black people are villians... a minority aren't.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/08/2016 18:07

Or maybe you are right and hate speech is fine if it's aimed at invisable disabilities.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/08/2016 18:09

If it's not acceptable for one group, it's not acceptable for another.

RowanMumsnet · 18/08/2016 18:11

If we've got the same post you're thinking of, it said:

'Its wrong that kids are getting those labels because some of them will just be horrible children.'
