I have reported this thread a number of times and it has been up for hours - please can you delete it now! This is ridiculous

I've reported racist threads before. Those Why are people ?

Reply is usually about education for the masses. It's tiresome. I try not to click on anything like that anymore.

CrazyDuchess · 16/09/2016 15:26

I agree roundtable I probably should just ignore but it is horribly unfair??

Compounded by MNHQ silence leaves a horrible taste.

Hi all,

Apologies for the radio silence, it's been a fairly busy day here. Yes, we did fuck up and make the wrong call by leaving the thread up initially, it should have gone sooner. We know that upset was also compounded as it then took us too long to remove it once we received more reports later on.

It is never our intention to upset anyone and we have had a discussion at MNHQ about what went wrong and how to stop it from happening again.

It was a shit storm of events including human error and a shift handover too and so it took us longer than it should have to get to this.

We are in the process of changing our reports system to combat this and to make sure that threads such as this one are dealt with in a more timely manner.

We know we sound like a broken record but we really are sorry that this was left up for so long and we are putting things in place to address this.

Thank you all for reporting and for calling us out on this. We do try our best, but we do get it wrong sometimes.

Apologies again for any upset caused.

balletcats · 16/09/2016 16:29

Rebecca

I fully appreciate things can sometimes take longer than anticipated and anyone is capable of making a 'wrong call'.

However, there does seem to be a culture of assuming the benefit of the doubt when there's a racist post which wouldn't be there if the post attacked those on benefits, having children in a same sex relationship, elderly people.

Write a post saying old women smell of wee and it vanishes: write a post saying black people are criminals and maybe it's goady ... But it might not be ...

Genuinely I don't understand this.

Vixxfacee · 16/09/2016 16:31

But not to busy to delete the mm thread in a few minutes though.

JudyCoolibar · 16/09/2016 16:41

Doesn't it partly come down to not having enough mods on at night again? There was a thread I reported last night which was essentially an invitation to people to sneer at a child about her school uniform - it's gone now, but it took well over 12 hours for MN to get rid of it.

RebeccaMumsnet · 16/09/2016 16:45

We do totally see your point.
Last night, we made the wrong call and then had a shift change and it took longer than we would have liked to make the right call.

The new system we are planning would combat this, it involves a triage system and at least two sets of eyes on each report. It's a work in progress but we hope it will help to catch the threads that slip through the net.

CrazyDuchess · 16/09/2016 16:51

So basically there is a training need for your staff because they couldn't see a racist post when it was staring them in the face......

And the last time you "implemented a new system" so trigger words like "racist" would be flagged and dealt with quickly..... yup super confident that your new system will be the dogs Hmm

Wondermoomin · 16/09/2016 17:09

I didn't read the threads that have already been discussed here, but I'm reminded of the one time I did report something...

Someone had started a thread about whether they had eye AIDS. Quite rightly, a few people commented that this was inappropriate and reported it too. Then the OP tried to 'explain the joke' saying that it came from a post years ago about using eyeliner bought off eBay and how you could end up with eye AIDS because for all you know it could've been Mugabe's eyeliner. I reported it for racism (making jokes out of catching AIDS from an African FFS) but meanwhile loads of other posters piled in to say how funny it was Confused I genuinely don't get how this is a funny joke, but MNHQ clearly agreed because they let the thread stand and just edited the title "because the joke wasn't reeeaaalllly working". I can't believe that I could be the only one to feel that a "joke" like that is offensive, but that's how it came across to me so I just had to stop reading...

So yes, I'm in support of what you're saying duchess and others - I don't think MNHQ are as hot on racism as they are on other "-isms" Sad

CrazyDuchess · 16/09/2016 17:18

Thank you Wonder I have been a member on this forum for less than a year and I have never been subjected to such nastiness tolerated in my entire life.

What a galling is the same ridiculous lines are trotted out by the admin here and nothing changes.

If you asked me 5 months ago was MN racist I would have said no.

Now - absolutely

WomensNet · 16/09/2016 17:29

What I find interesting about MNHQs response is their complete avoidance of the word 'racist' in their communication about said thread. There's insight for you.

Badders123 · 16/09/2016 18:04

The fact that MNHQ staff need training to recognise racist bullshit is pretty damning in itself isn't it?
And what about the shed loads of bollocks the sn community on mn have to deal with?
Is that's always due to a shift change too?

Badders123 · 16/09/2016 18:07

Mimsy, pathetic irrelevant "apology" from MNHQ
RACIST
THE THREAD WAS RACIST
IT WAS STARTED BY A GOADY RACIST FUCKER AND WAS KEFT TO STAND FOR HOURS...HOW LONG DO MNHQ SHIFT CNAGES TAKE BTW?
THE OP THEN PILED ON THIS THREAD - TO ONCE MORE ASSERT THEY WERENT RACIST!
What an omnishambles.

CrazyDuchess · 16/09/2016 18:38

It's gone six on a Friday night - they won't come back here.

They'll hope we'll forget and move on......

Oh you're back are you?
Mn have admitted your thread was racist and taken it down
Sadly they took far too long to do it
And as for only me being offended?
Are you on glue!?
I have news for you.....making Sweeping, lazy, untrue comments about a whole race of people is RACIST
It's pretty much the very definition isn't it?
Anyway...not going to waste any more of my time on you...
I wonder if mnhq think an Op stalking a complaint thread is ok?
Probably....

Jasonandyawegunorts · 16/09/2016 19:37

RebeccaMumsnet

I've been thinking... which is always risky but could you also have some kind of day time nightwatch (City watch if we stick with Prattchett) in place, where volunteers can hide obvious rule breakers until MNHQ can see the posts.

This would cut down on bun fights, derailed threads, goady thread, repeated reports, threads by perverts and so on.

Vixxfacee · 16/09/2016 19:43

A suggestion could be you get some mods who are a bit more diverse.

CrazyDuchess · 16/09/2016 19:46

A small minority of posters trying to set an agenda

Nope just a small minority of posters fed up of being treated badly. As you can see from this post this is a problem that predates your ill-informed post.

As you can also see MN agreed it should have taken your post down much faster.

So really just go away and if you have an issue as I said yesterday go start your own thread and leave us "small minorities" alone

Peace & love

I'm with Vixx - clearly the moderators they currently have cannot recognise racism - so that needs to be addressed

Oh please stop with this "inverted racist" bullshit. CALLING YOU OUT ON YOUR RACISM IS NOT RACIST. Jesus Christ, if you really can't understand that then I just don't know how you get through day to day life.

What Mumsnet has shown me is just how many people either hold racist views or are so used to casual racism that they don't even acknowledge it as a "thing". Since noticing on MN, I've also been noticing it in real life. The same MN-types that I come across at work, at DD's activities, anywhere, often make sweeping statements or brush racism off as "not a big deal". It's just so normal to some people.

The fact that we are being told we're both "delicate flowers" and "inverted racists" (how we can be both I do not know Hmm) for calling out racist shitbags just proves that.

CrazyDuchess · 16/09/2016 19:53

question may have been interpreted as racist, however can't see how that is, unless you're a serially offended delicate flower

I am not a serially offended delicate flower. I am a black woman and I object to sweeping offensive generalisations about my race being made hidden in faux ignorance.
