Livid - porn on my phone! please help

I'm not the most tech savvy person, can anyone help please?

Last night I was posting on Mumsnet and an advert for a sex chat site appeared out of nowhere which had a close up video of a woman using a vibrator on herself that completely filled the screen Angry.

How did I inadvertently do this? It was on the Louise Mensch thread, I followed a link to the tweet and read it, then went back to post my message. I think when I hit post is when the porn appeared but I can't be entirely sure. I couldn't work out how to get it to stop either for a minute, or how to close the page.

I don't want porn on my phone ffs! What can I do?

I've just had this on my phone as I tried to open a thread in Credit Crunch.

pinkmagic1 · 21/07/2016 22:29

I had a porn site pop up today when I clicked on a thread. Same image as op mentioned!

AYD2MITalkTalk · 21/07/2016 22:42

I wonder why some people are getting it and most not.

Anyone else on Virgin? Grin

slev · 21/07/2016 22:50

I got the Tesco one earlier while reading this thread. Didn't click on anything, didn't download Pokemon Go, so tech, sorry, but you're talking bollocks.

HQ - fancy coming back and apologising at any point? And maybe removing ads until you know they're not dodgy?

EmmanuelleMumsnet · 21/07/2016 23:12

Hi there,

Just to let you know our tech team is working hard to get to the bottom of this and fix it.

We're really sorry Flowers.

MooseAndSquirrel · 21/07/2016 23:16

AYD2 that's a good point, my phone is on kid safe so sites with an 18+ rating should get through, yet through MN two different ones have popped up. The first time whilst I was on the sofa with my 8yr old. She has the habit of looking over my shoulder, so just luck she didn't see it.
seems MN censor thread titles about Santa in case little eyes see - but graphic porn adds are ok.
HQ really need to be updating here/fixing the bloody issue or I'll (as I'm sure many will) have to give up on MN then what will I fill my evenings with?!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/07/2016 23:22

I assume you missed out the "not" in your post? Mine is set to kid safe but porn still gets through only on MN.

MooseAndSquirrel · 21/07/2016 23:26

I did indeed miss the not

paxillin · 21/07/2016 23:31

I keep watching which ads came up before, but there seems no pattern. I had hotels, then porn and pampers, then porn.

Imissmy0ldusername · 21/07/2016 23:45

I have got the occasional massive MN logo, but none of the porn shit. What I have noticed is the xero.com advert that takes over the left hand side of my screen. It goes over blog of the day, and all sorts.

Imissmy0ldusername · 21/07/2016 23:47

Right hand side - oops!

SecretSpy · 22/07/2016 00:07

I also keep getting this kind of basic version coming up

Yes,me too.

KateMumsnet · 22/07/2016 00:57

Hello everyone

Really sorry for the limited updates today - we are working hard on this, honestly, but we just haven't been able to replicate the issue at all here yet.

Today we turned off all the ads which are served through third-party partners, to try and narrow things down. It sounds as though some of you were still getting pop-ups, though, so earlier tonight we turned ads off altogether on the Talk section of the mobile site (ie if you're browsing threads on a mobile).

I'm not a techy I'm afraid but it does sound as though the only way to get to the bottom of this is with information from MNers. If this has happened to you, could you please clear your cache (sorry, we know it's a pain)? If it then happens again on Talk, on a mobile device please please do send the following info to [email protected].

  • Date and time of when the ad appeared (as close as possible)
  • Location
  • Type of device you are using
  • The Mumsnet page you are on
  • The URL of the landing page of the ad - tap and hold on your device and click 'copy link' to get this

Here are instructions for clearing the cache on [[www.phonearena.com/news/How-to-clear-cookies-cache-and-history-in-Chrome-for-Android_id70104
android phones]] and iOS phones.

Thanks so much everyone - all info is much appreciated.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 22/07/2016 01:07

Clearing cache doesn't stop this. I cleared the cache after getting the porn site and still got the Tesco ad

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/07/2016 01:12

MNHQ - would it be at all helpful for those having no issues at all to post?

I'm assuming these are targeted are being served, hence why it is so hard to replicate - do you know what sort of targeting your ad suppliers use - is there any further information those affected could give? Location? Web history etc? If you look at JaWellNoFine s link up thread it seems to include her device, location, and ISP...

MrsHardy1 · 22/07/2016 01:15

I've had this problem too. And the same as SecretSpy. Also on an android phone.

BeezerBubble · 22/07/2016 01:26

No issues at all - Windows 8 laptop, chrome browser T-Mobile/EE ISP, iPad mini, safari/chrome browser plusnet ISP

KateMumsnet · 22/07/2016 01:36

Lass, I think the cache clearing is supposed to help the tech team narrow things down, rather than anything else. Could you let us know when you cleared it, and also when you saw the Tesco pop-up, so that we can cross-check with the times that we took action at this end? The other information requested above would also be useful (although obviously you can't copy the url of the ad now).

ItsAllGoingToBeFine, these are very good questions. I've got to turn in now or I'll be no use for owt tomorrow, but let me check back with the tech team first thing and get back to you.

Night all and apols again.

MermaidofZennor · 22/07/2016 05:27

What I'm going to do is log out of MN and not access it on my Kindle until this is sorted. But I am going to monitor the family's other Kindle and see what's happening there. Not happy with this situation and I don't believe it is just MN infected then if if really can't spread from one Kindle to linked others. If I find anything then I will log in via my laptop and report.

Roussette · 22/07/2016 07:26

MNHQ - would it be at all helpful for those having no issues at all to post?

I've not had a problem, apart from large letter Mumsnet. I have MN on a bookmarks bar so if I click MN again it tends to go.

BUT I'm not on a tablet or mobile and having read this thread, it is a problem with just those devices? No pop ups or anything like that on my laptop.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 22/07/2016 07:50

It does seem to be mobiles. And it's not just an Android problem. There will be far more Android affected because despite iPhone being the smartphone every one has heard of Android has over 80% of the market. There are posters saying ios and windows phones are affected too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/07/2016 08:01

if it helps, all I've been getting is giant mn and it loading with no css occasionally. I'm on an iPad with adblocker running or my pc, on chrome again with Adblock. I've not used my phone on mn since the reports, but I hate using mn on my android phone as I allow ads on it and they take up more than half the screen.

MyBeloved · 22/07/2016 08:49

What is happening please?

GloGirl · 22/07/2016 08:54

I'll clear my cache.

Main problem is they pop up with a dialogue box which I shouldn't really click on but can't get to a url otherwise? Pressing and holding on the box offers me no options unless I click ok.
