Offensive nicknames

I'm going to be flamed, I know!

I get that people just want to avoid being quoted in the Mail but - sigh - do we really have to have so many names with fuck, cunt, twat in them?

I'm not anti swearing but I've just had it drummed into me that these words are offensive. I don't mind, for instance, 'DP was 4 hours late and I am so fucked off, AIBU to rhink he's a twat?' I wouldn't personally but you know, free speech and all.

But that's very different to just having them there. I've just replied to another poster who's username is nothing but swear words and three of the sort generally considered to be most offensive.

I don't know; I just don't like it - does anyone feel the same as me? Or am I being cats-bum-mouthed?

rainbowstardrops · 11/06/2016 14:28

Most of them just make me giggle but maybe I'm just childish Hmm

I still chuckle everytime I read EatshitDerek Grin

Wolfiefan · 11/06/2016 14:35

I keep wanting to address EatshitDerek as Eatshit. That seems so wrong and rude!

Wolfiefan · 11/06/2016 14:36

Perhaps we should change our usernames to:
FuckyouDailyFail
DailyFailarearseholes
CuntingDailyFail
DailyMailtwats???

dafuqisdis · 11/06/2016 14:46

If any user names should be banned it's the "wacky" or "kooky" ones. Soz Katemiddletonsnudeshoes but yours is one of the offenders!

I always imagine the posters saying "oooh I'm mad me!"

Pissflaps!

sandylion · 11/06/2016 14:51

Yes!!! Katemiddletonsnudeshoes is a fucking awful name with 3 things I hate in it. I'm.not sure if it's meant to be an ironic nod to all that is bland. Now if it was katefuckswilly, I could get on board with that.

katefuckswilly · 11/06/2016 14:53

I inspired myself...Thanks OP!!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 11/06/2016 14:55

I find myself agreeing with you Kate. I find the sweary names just, tiresome, really. Although for some reason I'm not bothered by AnyFucker (and infact think it's a really clever nn) ... perhaps its because you're part of the furniture?

I love a good swear and probably swear in most of my posts, but I just think if my son's 12 year old friends set up a secret forum they would all have sweary names. I equate it with immaturity I suppose.

SlinkyVagabond · 11/06/2016 15:07

Right the sainted David Bowie has been dead long enough for me to name change back to OhWhatFuckeryIsThis. When I can find my password that is.

dizzyfucker · 11/06/2016 15:13

It's ridiculous, lowers the tone of the place.

Why people think they will be quoted anyway, the DF never does that. Also they should just leave their identifiable and searchable user name to be directly quoted in the newspaper, rather than the anonymous one like A*r. It's silly.

Da it's a pair of shoes! Mad!?

OP posts:
Ineedmorelemonpledge · 11/06/2016 15:33

AF it's the second one...

MewlingQuim · 11/06/2016 15:39

I love the sweary names.

The nicknames are part of MN, as is changing them whenever we feel like it. Get rid of the silly rude names and I will flounce Angry

My name is only slightly rude

TiggyD · 11/06/2016 15:47

YANBU.

Constant rude wordage is no way to keep a husband.

What would happen if a child were ever to access Mumsnet? There would be a terrible to-do, possibly culminating in a fractious rumpus.

I really don't think anything of a sweary username.

I dislike names with 'mummy' in, or numbers.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/06/2016 16:06

I agree with the OP.

tiffyfanny · 11/06/2016 17:00

This thread as made me laugh GrinKatefuckswilly excellent user name for this thread.

SilverBirchWithout · 11/06/2016 18:48

I don't find the sweary namesoffensive, most make me smile and I enjoy the torture people have in politely replying to cuntychops or the like.

We have an outbreak of sweary names at the moment because of the Daily Mail fuckery with threads, now the DM sign-posting more twats, goady fuckers and trolls to the site is a much more important issue MNHQ needs to address.

I just cannot see the point in policing the 'offensiveness' of people's names, you see I don't much like names that pay homage to the royal family or all the mummy names and find them twee and pathetic. But it's not up to me to tell people what they can and cannot call themselves.

ABCAlwaysBeCunting · 11/06/2016 18:57

I've had a couple of sweary names, mainly because I am a child and find them amusing rather than to avoid being quoted in the Heil.

I think silverbirch is spot on with regard to trying to police them.

dizzyfucker · 12/06/2016 01:02

What would happen if a child were ever to access Mumsnet?

I think I can safely say that no child in their right mind is going to go wthin 100 yards of something called "Mumsnet", if it changes to Zombienet or blockblaster we might have a problem.

My kids know I'm on mumsnet, they hate mumsnet Grin.

Quiero · 12/06/2016 10:15

Getting all serious for a minute...I think there's an element of escapism in the sweariness. Many of us joined this site when we had small children and in those dark, dark days this was sometimes the only place where you got to talk to other adults and talk like an adult. Women and in particular mothers are often infantalised and I love the fact that it doesn't happen here.

ExitPursuedByBear · 12/06/2016 12:59

I so agree OP

But I am the resident prude so I would.

AllegraWho · 12/06/2016 13:07

I really don't mind - but seeing this thread did make me briefly itch for a name change. Turns out I'm too lazy to ho through with it though.

Failed rebel, me.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 12/06/2016 13:49

dafuqisdis

I always imagine the posters saying "oooh I'm mad me!"

Yes me too about the sweary ones. Sorry I agree with the posters who said they are tiresome and trying too hard.

Nobody notices my name is sweary any more
Or it's that I get indulged like a dotty old aunt

If you say so.
