Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

Hang in there on the Classic front, Mary - I'm with you.

cozietoesie · 17/03/2016 13:50

Yes - I guess you run the risk of losing the big Customise. I don't know how to get round that except to reiterate that I think Classic's days are numbered so you might ('might') be better off moving individually when there are still people who have the original Customise around. (I seem to have been grandfathered in on it for example.) Otherwise, they might just make a wholesale and composite forced change as has happened before.

I don't know, I'm afraid. Your call.

Fiderer · 17/03/2016 14:06

But how can it be "customise" when it states:

You can change the way Mumsnet looks by clicking on any one of these options. We think you'll get the most out of MN by opting for our lovely New-style Mumsnet, but if you're averse to change you can set your Mumsnet preferences to another look - the way the board was in the good old days when no one was ever unreasonable and Hun meant Attila and pals.

When the only option is $style_description?

specialsubject · 17/03/2016 14:07

please stop the annoying flicky blue buttons from appearing.

please reduce the huge spaces between paragraphs. too much scrolling needed, very poor design.

please get the thing tested by paid testers, or put it back how it was.

please advise how you make so much money from a free site that you can afford to do this!!

Thurlow · 17/03/2016 14:19

Maryz - I'm afraid that if I move to New now, I'll lose all my customise. I don't want the media buttons, or the floating bar thingy or the moving buttons.

I'm not sure what options I have, though I can check them, but I don't have media buttons, floating bars or moving buttons. Whatever I've set it to is very static. Though I don't blame you for clinging to Class Grin

Allalonenow · 17/03/2016 14:21

Well, I'm another one on Classic, so thought I'd look into updating but I have no customise button at all, it used to be at the top left hand side of the page.

I'm on a lap top, using Mozilla/Firefox and my OS is Vista, possibly a combination so outdated that I have been cast into Mumsnet Limbo.

Any help or advice welcome Shamrock

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/03/2016 14:23

Allalone - it'll be in the dropdown off Talk at the top of the page - click on the arrow next to Talk and it's in there. :)

Mummylin · 17/03/2016 14:23

Where are the active threads, I can't even find them !

Mummylin · 17/03/2016 14:24

Oh it's ok. I've just spotted them .

cozietoesie · 17/03/2016 14:41

It sounds as if there's already been 'tinkering' going on, Fiderer, so maybe it's all coming down on us quicker than we might have thought.

The trouble is, partly, that we don't know what was either required or promised as a result of the security audit following Jeffreygate. I very much doubt, though, that any requirements were restricted to changing the nature of the login. Wink And when you add in natural site(s) development?..............

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 17/03/2016 14:43

i do use new.

i dont know what people mean by the flicky buttons.

i've got two blue buttons over there

Allalonenow · 17/03/2016 14:52

Ohh thanks ThumbWA
I'd not realized that was a drop down, it's so faint I thought it was a smiling face!

SilverBirchWithout · 17/03/2016 15:02

You can remove the social media buttons on customise. Funnily enough mine were at the bottom rather than side.

cozietoesie · 17/03/2016 15:23

You can at the moment, Silver. The conversation above refers to the possibility of that option being taken away. Wink

SilverBirchWithout · 17/03/2016 15:25

Ah, I see.

Achh - just have some Gin anyway. The sun is nearly over the yard arm.

ExitPursuedByABear · 17/03/2016 15:30

I can't find customise anymore.

cozietoesie · 17/03/2016 15:41

There's a little drop down to the right of Talk, Bear. It should be in there.

ElementaryMyDear · 17/03/2016 16:13

Sorry if someone else has raised this, I couldn't face reading through 640 posts.

In the box at the top right on the desktop, it always defaults to discussions of the day. Previously, if you clicked on something in "Trending", it stayed on trending. Now it defaults back to DotD, which I for one don't want. Please could we go back to how it was before?

paxillin · 17/03/2016 16:22

It's ok when viewed at 150 %, so I do that.

Scone1nSixtySeconds · 17/03/2016 16:31

I am still on classic too.

The DC are astonished. I have Spring cleaned and reorganised the whole of the downstairs of the house today as I haven't been on here.

Perhaps losing the ability to read MN will turn me into a house proud wifelet after all.

BYOSnowman · 17/03/2016 16:38

Is it a coincidence that at the same time as mn changing to a google font I only seem to be seeing ads for Google on the right now?

MistressMerryWeather · 17/03/2016 16:40

Anyone else's usernames keep buggering off?
