Trans people being allowed to compete against women in the Olympics

OhShutUpThomas · 24/01/2016 09:37

The Olympics are now allowing men who have taken hormones for 12 months compete against women.

It is NOT transphobic to say that this is grossly unfair and a huge violation of women's rights.

Women who have trained all their lives cannot be expected to compete against people with male bodies and who will be allowed roughly 4 times the normal female testosterone levels.

It's not on. We can't stand for it.

Please get behind this mumsnet. Someone needs to take a stand.

It's NOT transphobic to state that this is unfair. It really isn't.

I'm interested to note that there seems to be a clear distinct two groups within the Trans movement. Those who are transsexual and those who are trandsgender.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 26/01/2016 11:22

I have no issue with people namechanging to disagree, i completely understand why they would - look how long it has taken a lot of us to take this to 'real life'!

One other thing. I think i asked upthread if mnhq could feature a guest blog on this? Something they could do to 'help' without explicitly supporting...?

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 26/01/2016 11:23

(In 'blog of the day'. Which gets shared by mnhq on both facebook and twitter)

CrayonShavings · 26/01/2016 11:30

Thomas that's what makes it so suspicious that the powers that be are pushing ahead with this - the public are not, largely, supportive of these changes.

Yes maybe, Maryz. If MNHQ insist that it's nothing they've done, then something technical must have gone wrong.

Grin Mary, I think you are correct.

RebeccaMumsnet · 26/01/2016 11:38

Hi all,

We have just asked Tech for the specific algorithm as I'm not 100% sure. I'll post it as soon as we have it but we haven't excluded this thread or any other on the same issue from trending.

We have no reason to shut down this discussion, we are pleased that you have a place to have this discussion, it's incredibly interesting.

Cerseirys · 26/01/2016 11:43

It's not on Trending of Discussion of the Day but it is appearing in the In the News section of the sidebar now.

RebeccaMumsnet · 26/01/2016 11:45

Yes, we've just added to ITN.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 26/01/2016 11:46

Thank you for adding it to 'in the news', Rebecca (and tech!)

Fair enough Headmaster

WombOfOnesOwn · 26/01/2016 11:53

Thank you for making your opinion heard, Headmaster. Truly, thank you -- it must be hard when the thread is very slanted in one direction (I've been on that side of things before!).

Please truly do feel free to mark your abstention; I don't think anyone would think less of you. Even those of us very much on the side of "protest" understand that these issues bring up complex emotional and social issues that don't have satisfactory answers for everyone. I wouldn't want anyone to think her voice wasn't being heard.

womb has summed up what I wanted to say headmaster
Thank you for your opinion.

YY to that. The weight of opinion shouldn't silence dissenting voices.

FattyNinjaOwl · 26/01/2016 11:59

Fwiw I don't think anyone is being a coward. I just wanted to see how many people were in agreement with the IOC, as MNHQ made it sound like there were loads of people saying that this was perfectly acceptable.

Exactly Fatty. To both points.

fidel1ne · 26/01/2016 12:01

It wouldn't matter if you were Headmaster. Men, transwomen and transmen all have every right to an opinion and a vote, if they're MNers.

Iam

I would be interested to know why you don't agree with the IOC. I think that your view on this is important. Naturally Mumsnet is inclusive of all views.

I think the tone of this thread is obviously in support for those women who decide to go into sports and make a living from it. They do go on to have children (and many are successful post birth too). This is their livelihoods. Something they have worked hard for and have excelled at.

fidel1ne · 26/01/2016 12:06

I see Smile

I can't keep up with all these threads.
