Mumsnet Talk Apps

JustineMumsnet · 27/08/2015 14:07

Afternoon all,

In the wake of the recent hacking and DDoS attacks, we've been considering the security of the entry points to Mumsnet. Because the current Talk app uses http, rather than https we can't guarantee that it is 100% secure, so we've taken it offline.

We've been developing a new ios app using https for a while and we'll be launching it in a few weeks' time; obviously we'll let you know as soon as it's out. We hope to follow it up with an Android app in due course. In the meantime, though, we'd suggest app users move over to our mobile site. Sorry for the inconvenience; hope to see you on the new one very soon.

Thanks,
MNHQ Flowers

That explains why I can't get in then. Not on iOS so hurry up with the android version Smile.

Simurgh · 27/08/2015 14:18

Ah - it's already gone? That explains it.

WeShouldOpenABar · 27/08/2015 14:32

What does in due course mean?! the app was poor and thats been well known for a long time I cant believe you dont have something in development already.

I only use the app :(

JustineMumsnet · 27/08/2015 14:33

We do have something in development - it's currently being tested - it will be ready in a few weeks.

But not for Android users ?

mrspremise · 27/08/2015 14:41

Now I have to get off my arse and use the computer?

JustineMumsnet · 27/08/2015 14:46

By far the majority of MN app users are on iphone so we've focused on that first, as we don't have infinite resources and unfortunately android and ios require completely different skill-sets - so you can't really do them in tandem. But we have put a lot of work into the mobile site which is pretty good and worth trying. Not as slick as the app will be but it does have some app-like features.

mrspremise. Im muttering with you. Nevermind. I'tll mean I get more things done until we get a new one.

msgrinch · 27/08/2015 14:50

How annoying, the mobile site is glitchy and slow on my phone. The lack of warning about the app going is a bit off too. Not sure if it's worth using mn if the apps not there.

Sorry about lack of warning - we thought about it but the problem with warning folks is that we would obviously warn everyone - including potential hackers.

Well that sucks.

Especially as an apparently inferior android user Hmm.

Seems like a good time to take my long overdue break from MN.

cjt110 · 27/08/2015 14:55

What about Windows Phone Justine? Any plans?

GudrunBrangwen · 27/08/2015 14:56

Oh I really like the mobile site Smile Thanks Justine. I have never felt the need for an actual app, because I cannot type on a tablet (how anyone does it on a PHONE is beyond me) so I just occasionally read it in bed.

App, schmapp. MN is perfect how it is.

msgrinch · 27/08/2015 14:58

Exactly Pam. Clearly us android users will just have to go without.

GudrunBrangwen · 27/08/2015 14:58

God stop MOANING everyone. Like they aren't doing their best.

Brew Justine

ShallHeBeTheOne · 27/08/2015 15:15

I wonder if people who were on he list used the app

MsJuniper · 27/08/2015 15:20

Love the app but happy to wait for a new one!

My favourite thing on it is My Topics - doesn't seem to be a feature on the web/mobile versions (unless I just haven't found it). If there's any chance of adding that facility at some point please do Smile

ouryve · 27/08/2015 15:24

Oh FFS. It has emerged that the old app is a security weak point which needed eradicating. It's not worth getting huffy about it no longer being supported and hardly worth a dramatic flounce.Hmm

I use the mobile site just fine in Chrome on my android phone. It was even sort of OK on my Windows phone, despite the mobile version of windows not supporting any of the bells and whistles of any useful website whatsoever. Now you do feel like a third class citizen if you have a windows phone. That's why I got rid of it.

Redglitter · 27/08/2015 15:30

I hate the mobile version but being a second rate android user I guess my time will be cut back considerably now.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 27/08/2015 15:30

In a toss up between having to use the mobile site and parents not getting support and friendship they need because Jeffrey and Simon have taken 5 mins out of their heavy wanking schedule to attack again... think I'll be using the mobile site. Not seeing the drama here.

BIWI · 27/08/2015 15:38

FFS - a bit of consideration for what's happening/what MNHQ are trying to do wouldn't go amiss Hmm

Don't be so self-centred and martyrish about being 'second rate'. Justine's explained why.

It makes absolute sense to concentrate on the platform that most MNers use.

SugarPlumTree · 27/08/2015 15:41

The mobile site through Chrome works well on my Android phone too. It wasn't too good through Safari but swapping over did the trick nicely.

AyeAmarok · 27/08/2015 15:41

Not impressed by the lack of Android provision, but understand the issue with the old app's security.

But only doing an app for iPhone (for the foreseeable) is really not cool.

TheOnlyPink · 27/08/2015 15:50

shallhe I was on the list and used the app almost exclusively. I was only ever asked for my password (pre mumsnet forced reset) on the app, so I think it's a good point about the app being a security risk.

FelixFelix · 27/08/2015 16:13

I've never used the mobile site until right now. It will take some getting used to! Looking forward to the new app.
