Mumsnet Talk Apps

JustineMumsnet · 27/08/2015 14:07

Afternoon all,

In the wake of the recent hacking and DDoS attacks, we've been considering the security of the entry points to Mumsnet. Because the current Talk app uses http, rather than https we can't guarantee that it is 100% secure, so we've taken it offline.

We've been developing a new ios app using https for a while and we'll be launching it in a few weeks' time; obviously we'll let you know as soon as it's out. We hope to follow it up with an Android app in due course. In the meantime, though, we'd suggest app users move over to our mobile site. Sorry for the inconvenience; hope to see you on the new one very soon.

Thanks,
MNHQ Flowers

@Heathcliff27

I can never see the photos on threads when I use the Ipad app anyway so sometimes end up swapping to safari just to see a pic. Hope the new app allows me to see the photos.

The new app shows photos, yes.

I haven't been able to log into the test app since it came back online a few days ago...it doesn't seem to like my lovely post Jeffrey pass word. Any thoughts?

MrsWembley · 28/08/2015 10:15

For the benefit of those asking, I'm posting this from the beta app!

HaveAWeeNap · 28/08/2015 10:25

My thought process was that it's a real pain in the arse at the moment. And by the time I managed to get on to see Justine's thread the app was long gone.
Aren't we even allowed to vent a little frustration?
I appreciate they are doing all they can - was just having a moan as it feels like there's an issue every day.

LynetteScavo · 28/08/2015 10:31

Oh, that would explain why I'm logged out on my phone, and no amount of deleting and reinstalling app did any good. Duh!

I had to resort to checking my emails with no MN app to look at!

SheldonsSpotOnTheCouch · 28/08/2015 11:38

I did the deleting and reinstalling too Lynette!

I'm not keen on the mobile site. It's slow and not easy to use. That's not me moaning or threatening to flounce, it's just general feedback. I liked the app and look forward to a new (and more secure) android app.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/08/2015 11:56

Ah! Glad it wasn't just my phone playing silly beggars!

Thanks for the heads up MNHQ and hope the new app is here soon

I must admit I did smirk a bit at all the "second class" android flouncers! Grin

MajesticWhine · 28/08/2015 13:17

Ah, thanks for this. I thought I'd messed up with the password (again)

woodhill · 28/08/2015 14:00

I'm finding it rubbish using the mobile site on my Samsung tablet tbh, so slow and can't see many posts on active as you did on the app.

AnyFucker · 28/08/2015 14:15

That explains why I haven't been able to log in on the app ! Phew.

RedYellaGreen · 28/08/2015 16:33

Just to be clear... You're only talking about the old purple app, and not the new blue one?

Because the old app doesn't login but the new blue works like a dream still. Please say I can keep using it?

SarahMumsnet · 28/08/2015 16:54

Yes to all of that, RedYellaGreen Smile

RedYellaGreen · 28/08/2015 16:55

Ohhhh hurrraaaayyyyyy!!!!!! Thanks Smile

RedYellaGreen · 28/08/2015 16:57

Ps: I don't need to reset the password or anything? I saw something on a different thread suggesting it.

Sleepyfergus · 28/08/2015 19:23

I totally empathise with everything that's been going on, but please can you also use twitter/Facebook to advise users of this? I have been trying to use the app with no success the last 24 hours, wasn't sure if there was a problem or if my (many times) reset password was causing this issue.

Looking forward to a new app. The mobile version is good for many reasons but the app had the edge on slickness!

woodhill · 28/08/2015 19:33

My blue app on the android from google playstore definitely doesn't work on tablet or phone both Samsung devices, didn't know there was a purple app.

MrsWembley · 28/08/2015 20:28

Ah, I don't know about colours on Android, but us smug iOS users used to have a purple icon and now the beta version of the new app has a blue icon.

Hth

MrsWembley · 28/08/2015 20:29

(Which, btw MNHQ, appears to have broken again... Sorry!)

RedYellaGreen · 28/08/2015 21:39

Mine's broken too, MrsWembley, it isn't a login problem because I stay logged in, but it's a posting problem and although I can see other people's posts on threads, it won't allow me to post!

It's horrible, a bit like watching people through the window. I want to be inside the party!

ShyGirlie · 29/08/2015 09:19

Would have been nice to have had a little pop up when trying to open the app informing me that it was no longer usable. (Android app). Instead I've spent the past few days uninstalling, re-installing, changing password, checking my wifi etc.

Also, will we be informed when the new app is available - by email? I won't be on the mobile or desktop versions as I find them clunky, but would like to know when the new android app is available.

I understand that you're busy in light of whats happened, but you must surely have plenty of staff working to resolve these issues.

Really hoping you get cracking with the android app ASAP.

Allisgood1 · 31/08/2015 18:52

Everytime I try to post on the test app it says Im offline. Im not. Which means that unless I am on desktop I can't post. Is this right??

Simurgh · 31/08/2015 19:06

I'm not sure that MNHQ are entirely in control of their own destiny on the matter of 'opening inscriptions' - it has to fit in with what Apple etc etc want I suspect.

I agree entirely that it would have been much better to have something there - not every user knew there was an issue with Jeff - but I just don't know what's possible in practice.

(Allisgood1 - you can use the desktop or mobile sites on Safari. (I'd rather not use Safari myself, but that's just me.))

Only1scoop · 01/09/2015 09:32

Users who are used to the purple app on iPhone....what are you now using?

I only have access to iPhone. I'm finding the mobile app virtually useless for updating threads etc.

SarahMumsnet · 01/09/2015 10:46

Morning all - several of you asked why we didn't have a message on the app explaining that we'd taken it down. Apologies for that: the reason was that
the app only allows you to view stuff AFTER you've logged in, by which time you've already sent your password over http, which was the security risk that we were trying to remove. To show any kind of message, we'd have had to get you to login first, which would have defeated the purpose of shutting down the app in the first place. It wasn't ideal, we realise, but it seemed like the lesser of two evils under the circumstances.

We'll look into the possibility of an email alert when the new app is released and get back to you asap.

Thanks
MNHQ

SarahMumsnet · 01/09/2015 10:51

Back! I've checked, and yes, we'll send an email alert to let you know the new app has been released into the wild. Smile
