Mumsnet Talk Apps

JustineMumsnet · 27/08/2015 14:07

Afternoon all,

In the wake of the recent hacking and DDoS attacks, we've been considering the security of the entry points to Mumsnet. Because the current Talk app uses http, rather than https we can't guarantee that it is 100% secure, so we've taken it offline.

We've been developing a new ios app using https for a while and we'll be launching it in a few weeks' time; obviously we'll let you know as soon as it's out. We hope to follow it up with an Android app in due course. In the meantime, though, we'd suggest app users move over to our mobile site. Sorry for the inconvenience; hope to see you on the new one very soon.

Thanks,
MNHQ Flowers

Android now have around 80% of the mobile phone market share. Ridiculous how developers still prioritise iOS and immediately cut them selves off from 80% of their potential market.

KobblyKnees · 27/08/2015 20:19

Bloody hell - huffy people on here.

Thanks MNHQ WineWineWine

KobblyKnees · 27/08/2015 20:21

I could swear it was sparkling wine yesterday on here - have we run out or am I loosing my marbles?

zoobaby · 27/08/2015 20:25

I clicked on this thread hoping to read that there was an improved Android App I could finally download.

I always use the mobile site... purely because the existing App was rubbish. I'm pretty sure there would be a lot more Android platform users if it actually worked.

HarrietSchulenberg · 27/08/2015 21:00

His Mumsnet - would it be possible to view pics on the new android app, or have a View On Mobile Site link on threads where pics are posted, please? Gets annoying having to open the mobile site from a bookmark, then find the thread (which has moved in the Active Convoy list) when someone posts a pic that can't be seen on the app.
Just, y'know, seeing as you're tinkering with it anyway Smile.

NoDramaForTheLlama · 27/08/2015 21:24

I've only ever used the App (until now) and I was not on the list.

cluecu · 27/08/2015 21:26

WOW lots of hate on here....chill out guys, MN you're doing grand Smile

BrumpyGollocks · 27/08/2015 21:32

Ok, Thanks so much for clarifying Simurgh,Wow I feel so dense right now!Confused

I promise I'm not normally this slow off the mark but I can't seem to take anything in at the moment!

Ah well tomorrow is another day & hopefully a better one!

Redglitter · 27/08/2015 21:33

Hate? Really you must have a different definition to me of hate. Frustrated and exasperated people perhaps but I can't see anything stronger than that

For the other frustrated android users I've put a shortcut on my home page it's making the mobile site pretty much like an app. Loads instantly like the app. Good compromise for me til the new app is releases

LastOneDancing · 27/08/2015 22:04

I don't like change!

But seriously, there will be a new Android app by March won't there? New baby is due then and I'll be putting in some serious early hours one handed MNing... [selfish emoticon].

Anticyclone · 27/08/2015 22:06

Ah, I'm feeling quite misty-eyed now, 99% of my MN experience has been through the android app. It may have had its faults, but on my phone it was FAST compared to a web browser. Ho hum, heading over to the mobile site I guess. Damn you Jeffrey.

SavoyCabbage · 27/08/2015 22:22

Probably not the right place but why are my thread titles so big on the new app?

Mumsnet Talk Apps
guinnessgirl · 27/08/2015 22:24

I have always preferred the app, despite its limitations, for two key reasons - it is very economical with battery drain and data usage compared to the bloatware that is Chrome. Please retain this on the new Android app!

MimsyBorogroves · 27/08/2015 22:35

If we are testing the new app, are we safe to keep using that, or do we delete all apps for now?

Lulabellarama · 27/08/2015 22:51

Some people need to remind themselves that MN is FREE.
You are not paying for these apps or the forum you are so desperate to access. Chill the fuck out and let MNHQ do what's necessary to keep our data safe.

AuntyMag10 · 27/08/2015 23:12

It's getting worse by the day, endless issues.fix it mnhq!

ouryve · 28/08/2015 00:03

It appears that they are, Aunty. Hence locking the 1337 h4x0r5 out by suspending the app.

HaveAWeeNap · 28/08/2015 02:26

Don't like using mobile, would have been courteous to let us know the app was going instead of me keep trying over and over to load it thinking another glitch or attack.
Yes the site is free - just like all The other apps and sites I use.
Has one person really caused such chaos? It feels like this has been going on for weeks now.

RainbowFlutterby · 28/08/2015 03:04

Dear MNers who are whinging like spoilt children and "threatening" to flounce.

Bye then, it's your own loss. It's "cutting your nose off to spite your face" and really rather egotistical to think your departure matters so much.

MadGrumblyGnome · 28/08/2015 04:01

Off to try Chrome instead of Safari. I was quite fond of the clunkiness of the old app, it was like a lovely comfy pair of mum boots, no bells and whistles.

Glad MNHQ are doing what they need to keep people's data safe.

WhatamessIgotinto · 28/08/2015 07:00

Um, they're trying? That's what they started this thread in the first place, to update us on what they are trying to put in place.

For those upset about the mobile app, I use the mobile site in chrome and always have done, have never had any issues. I would politely suggest that anyone really throwing their toys out of the pram about the app, may perhaps take a step back and consider if such a strong reaction suggests that they may need to limit their internet use to a more manageable level for them to cope with. Though I don't suppose that's terribly polite of me at all.

wigglesrock · 28/08/2015 07:15

I don't think posters are complaining about the app being taken down for security/hacking reasons. Although I'd wonder when MNHQ realised the App mightn't be secure, was it not looked at originally when the hacking took place. I know the App is outsourced - did this make a difference?

There has been a new App on its way/ being developed for months if not a year, every time there was an issue with the android app - such as no photos showing, topics (films) being empty, threads not loading, posts not showing in correct order, huge chunks of threads missing posters were told there's a new shiny App on its way, bear with. The new app is not a reaction to the hacking it's been an on going thing.

A few months ago volunteers were asked to test the app - only on IOS, it would be rolled out first, and the android one later, now it seems like phrases like "in due course" and hopefully an android one will follow are being used which is the corporate equivalent of a parental "we'll see".

Posters saying suck it up buttercup, it's free. There was discussion on threads about having two versions of the App, one free, one with a charge that would block adds. Should posters that pay for the app, if MN goes down that route have more of a say on posts, should their threads or opinions carry more weight?

WhatamessIgotinto · 28/08/2015 07:34

Well that would just be a bit silly wriggles don't you think? There are hundreds of apps that you can either choose to pay for one version or have another free version.

pixieg1rl · 28/08/2015 08:44

Can anyone beta testing the new app tell me if its up and working? I can't log in (getting the not connected to internet error message)

BIWI · 28/08/2015 08:52

would have been courteous to let us know the app was going

Um, that's exactly what Justine started a thread to do! And the speed of taking it down is to do with the hackers and our security as users of the site.

Bloody hell, I sometimes wonder about people's thought processes on here. Or whether MNHQ can ever get anything right!
