Morning all. Think I'm going to swot attack my eldest today with some dreaded 11+ practice.

shopafrolic · 22/08/2015 10:08

I wasn't going to share this yesterday as I don't know for definite that it is linked and I don't want to cause a panic. I was on the list and was contacted yesterday by my bank to say there had been numerous attempts at fraudulent transactions (all blocked thankfully). I know MN do not store any card info but I did use my MN password for some retail sites who had my card deets. If your situation was similar and you haven't checked your bank it might be worth a look.
I have advised MNHQ.

Sorry to hear that Shopafrolic. x

surpriseitsme · 22/08/2015 10:17

Is the latest post by Jeffrey true? I would hate to think he had published my full address and family details?

AttitcusFinchIsMyFather · 22/08/2015 10:23

what post and where?

noblegiraffe · 22/08/2015 10:24

Plenty of fish recently had a dodgy advert that downloaded a virus onto your computer and key logged any financial transactions, which could be why people are getting warnings on banking websites.

Just a heads up - got a very obvious phishing attempt allegedly from PayPal. The English was awful. Be aware people.

OhBigHairyBollocks · 22/08/2015 10:31

Yeah, what post and where?

catsrus · 22/08/2015 10:33

suzannefollowmyvan · 22/08/2015 10:33

pay pal phishing emails are very very common

DoctorDonnaNoble · 22/08/2015 10:33

They are indeed.

shopafrolic · 22/08/2015 10:36

Thanks KitKat
At least I'll be the proud owner of some shiny new cards :)

The thing is it's not just Jeremy who's a risk now. Publishing our login details were a gift from Jeremy to hackers the world over, from bored 14 year olds to serious professional criminals. They'll all be ttying to crack our accounts now.

That's why it's essential to change your passwords on other sites, if they're anyway similar to your mumsnet one.

And if your email log in is in anyway similar to your mumsnet one, you need to change that and ALL sites which you use that email to log in with (even if the password is totally different), as if hackers can access your email they can get potentially get access to all your linked accounts.

Flowers loki and shop

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/08/2015 10:45

oh shopThanks that's what you were trying to sort then. poor you.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/08/2015 10:48

Loki
well done for persevering especially when you didn't feel very strong to deal with it all. can't let the bastards bring you down.
glad you managed it.Thanks
big hugs to you

Simurgh · 22/08/2015 10:54

I think there will come a point, sleepyelectricsheep, if we're not already at it, where the presence of data on the web will matter very little to people trying to hack it. (Because they'll assume that it's already been tried or the data owner has changed things.) Having it around is a PITA right enough but my instinct tells me that if MN users have and keep up improved security standards they will be no worse off - and possibly a lot better off - than the many other net users who are being hacked, phished or otherwise defrauded every day.

It will be becoming boring for the small fry - and too much effort to justify any decent reward for the big guys.

That's my hope, anyway. Along with a quick one for MN users taking more security measures permanently than some appear to have done to date.

Flowers loki and shop

Pipbin · 22/08/2015 10:58

I'm not wanting to turn us all against each other but is there a chance that some post on here could be being made by less than honest people trying to scare us?

shopafrolic · 22/08/2015 10:58

Loki I sympathise. I struggle similarly so the past few days have been tricky - particularly yesterday with the bank. But I figure my online security is infinitely improved as a result of this - it was probably time for a wake up call.
Flowers for you

Simurgh · 22/08/2015 10:59

I should have added something to that. If any of you are really famous or really rich then it might be worth your while taking even more precautions because it probably would be worth people's efforts to mount an attack on you.

(Alternatively, get the butler to open all your accounts on their computer. Wink)

shopafrolic · 22/08/2015 10:59

Pipbin if you're referring to my bank stuff I am a longtime user of MN - have never NC'd - not even since being on the list. Not trying to scare anyone.
Just felt it right to mention. Might not even be connected as MN have no access to bank deets.

Simurgh · 22/08/2015 11:01

Of course there could, Pipbin. But then 'twas ever thus.

Pipbin · 22/08/2015 11:01

Not you at all Shop - just a general comment.

sleepyelectricsheep · 22/08/2015 11:02

Simurgh I think you underestimate the patience and obsessional nature of some hackers.

The mumsmet partners data was hacked using old data from the heartbleed attack for example and how long ago was that?
