Mobile site adverts

Hi all,

We’ve sorted quite a few of the glitches raised by you Thanks on the mobile site. Please do go and take another look and let us know any further thoughts.

We have the answers to your mobile related FAQs over here, if there is anything else you would like to know, please post below.

There’s been a bit of negative feedback about the fixed ad at the top of the site so we’d like to test a new approach this week - no fixed at at the top but a returning in-text ad (every 6 posts) as you scroll down the page (something we’ve seen on other sites like the Guardian)

Hopefully this will also be a preferable solution for those who’ve felt the pages are too uniform or too white. As ever, please let us know what you think.

@MirandaWest

I preferred them at the top - didn't really notice them there but they are definitely noticeable now.

Thanks MirandaWest that's very interesting and good to know your feelings.

MirandaWest · 02/09/2014 15:04

I think every 6 or so posts is too often. Maybe every 20?

JessicaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 15:04

@LineRunner

I prefer the new approach, ie not having the ad stuck at the top of the screen taking up space and generally being annoying.

I don't like scrolling ads anywhere, tbh. They make me grumpy.

Thanks LineRunner it's good to know your preferences too. Unfortunately moving ads aren't something we can just get rid of, sorry about that. Will Cake help improve mood?

Ihavemyownname · 02/09/2014 15:10

I'm another that prefers them at the top.
I find them distracting when trying to read now they are inbeteen posts.

MsMarvel · 02/09/2014 15:19

Much prefer the ads in the thread rather than at the top. I find them easier to ignore like this!

RebeccaMumsnet · 02/09/2014 15:26

@SwedishEdith

Seems better so far. It's funny, you've made so many changes it almost looks like the old site now Grin Now if we could just go to Active and TIO with one tap rather than two it'd be almost perfect! Or not that much different to how it was

Hi Swedish,

Have you not got the blue bar at the bottom with TIO and Active on? It takes you there in one tap.

No, no I got rid of them as soon as possible - too annoying

You could have another go now that the ad has moved and see if that makes a difference? What device are you using?

It's Ok - I'm reluctantly used to two taps. Xperia Chrome Android. I just want everything my own way Wink

Ok just tried. I've reduced the font size (to look more like how it was) and the blue buttons look too big and ugly against them now. So they've gone

Can I block the bloody ads? I hate it. I feel like I'm on a dodgy site.

MsMarvel · 02/09/2014 15:55

I really don't understand why people seem to think they have some right to demand that adverts disappear altogether.

Money needs to be generated somehow for a free sites that needs as much maintenance and upkeep as this one does. If they added a 'block ads' option then do you think anyone would actually chose to have them turned on? So money from adverts would disappear. I'm guessing all of the staff that are working round the clock just now to get the site to a good standard are not doing it for free, not would I expect them to. Money needs to be generated somehow.

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 02/09/2014 16:10

Sorry am I demanding the option to block ads? I'm not an idiot, I am aware how a site works you know. I asked a question.

mrstiggy · 02/09/2014 17:36

I guess this way is some improvement. I do feel constantly bombarded by them, but the moving ones stuck to the top of my screen gave me a headache and stopped me coming on. It also gave me more people to put on my mental list of brands to avoid (I hate companies who irritate me with pushy ads!) Any more and I'm going to have to live in a wood hut and avoid all civilisation. Smile

PitchSlapped · 02/09/2014 17:38

The adverts in the thread are really obtrusive. Every 6 posts is far too oftem

rurbane · 02/09/2014 17:48

Prefer it with ads in the thread, agree that it breaks the white screen up, so less headachey.

LineRunner · 02/09/2014 17:49

I hadn't even thought about the possibility of inappropriate ads popping up on sensitive boards and threads. Sad

WipsGlitter · 02/09/2014 18:09

I hate them in the middle!! Much preferred them at the top.

YoniMitchell · 02/09/2014 18:23

They're easier to skip over and ignore in the thread (probably not what your advertisers want to hear) so I prefer them like this to taking over the top of my screen, but the frequency seems pretty high and the relevance is somewhat lacking in some cases!

I'd happily pay to subscribe to an ad free version of MN though!

HoldenMcGroin · 02/09/2014 18:46

Skip and ignore is great but click on one every now and then, revenue for dear ole MN innit

nickelbabe · 02/09/2014 18:56

the only good thing about having them every 6 posts would be to break up Chaos's phone problems Grin

but in real life, 20 posts would be better

nickelbabe · 02/09/2014 18:59

I have noticed on this thread - the adverts are aafter 6 posts, then the next 6, than again the next 6, but then they stop!

I could cope with that. 3 times on the page.

springbabydays · 02/09/2014 20:33

Mmm, every six posts is too much. Every 10-15 more tolerable.

Can't you just have a fixed ad top and bottom any more?
