Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

Oops. Nexus 4 wishful thinking

Important information re the blue bar (shortcut buttons) at the bottom

To turn this off:

Go to your user icon (top right of the screen, the middle icon with a person in a circle); the option to turn off the shortcut buttons is at the very bottom of that menu.

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

When you click on "bookmark" it opens every ellipsis menu on the page simultaneously.

Thanks. Tech are looking at this one right now.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 22/08/2014 09:35

I blame myself. I tried the app, found the way they'd set up TIO (lack of preview, returning to top of thread, stupid numbers) made it unuseable for me, and instead of kicking up a fuss and moaning loudly I quietly moved to the mobile site, which did work the way I like it. Hence MNHQ didn't realise that the app way of doing TIO is ridiculously unfriendly, and decided to roll it out to the mobile site.

But be reassured MNHQ, I have learned my lesson. The next time you do something I don't like, I will not quietly find my own workaround, I will definitely complain loudly and repeatedly. Grin

I too get all the ellipses opening at once, and typing this post has cost me 5% battery, which isn't making this a workable mobile site and more power hungry than the desktop site, which I'm sure shouldn't be happening.

Oh and the bars closing down to zoom is still happening Smile and having to double tap to post is a pain

Other issues Tech are prioritising right now:

  1. addressing the laggy-ness/slowness (this is to do with a rogue code that's being generated on each post);
  2. Adding desktop-style functionality for 'Threads I'm On'.

Will try to find out now what the answer is to the power-use issue.

Once you have clicked in posting box and brought up keyboard, the blue bar stops floating at the bottom of the screen, and instead sits statically at bottom of page and the advert bar does the same but at the top of the page.

People complaining about the bookmark option not working - where is it? I can't see one at all. (Never realised there was one Blush).

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 22/08/2014 09:56

Please can you give us an answer as to whether or not we will get back the option to hide the social media buttons?

TIO list: numbers in the grey circle don't match total posts or posts since bookmark or posts since last visited.

bearfrills · 22/08/2014 09:57

I'm eating my battery using the site now. Gone from 99% to 92% and only been on for around five minutes. Mobile site isn't going to be usable for me in terms of battery life.

My customise options needs to be re customised daily, they keep resetting.

I'm also getting the problem with all of the elipses opening.

The numbers at the end of the thread title in TIO can't be number of pages as one I'm on only has two pages but the number five is showing at the end of it.

There's not a big enough divider between each post so they all kind of run together and I'm finding it hard paying attention to the individual usernames, it's like reading one long post. It gives me a headache.

I barely get any time on the laptop these days (three DC under the age of five) and I almost exclusively use MN on my mobile while BFing the baby. It's not something I'm going to be able to do anymore and I know it's melodramatic but I really do feel like I'm going to have to leave MN over it.

Please, please, please can it be put to a vote? This is more than people not liking change, it's a situation where a large number of users are being shut off from using MN because of their battery life (and charging the phone costs money!) or because it makes them feel ill or because it triggers medical conditions. Restore your reputation by putting your money where your mouth is and standing by the wants/needs of your members, members who have stood by the site for many years and make it what it is.

I also agree with the people says it doesn't feel warm and chatty anymore. It's sterile, cold, clinical. It looks like the mobile version of the Tesco website now and who wants to chat to a supermarket!?

I feel bad complaining because I'm betting you've all put a lot of time, effort and money into this but the complaints go far beyond a few grumbles and a few people being resistant to change. I'm sorry people don't like it, I used to work in R&D and system changes for 3000 staff were under our remit. We used to get so pissed off when they whinged about new features or the removal of old features. Extra fag breaks were had. Cake was eaten. Vodka was consumed. The words "ungrateful, miserable bastards" were muttered many, many times. But when it was something that genuinely wasn't workable we had to accept that the end users needed a system that was workable, suitable, and fit for purpose.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 10:01

UPDATE

The poor battery performance and the slow-loading pages are (we think) the same issue. That, together with the weird bookmarking problems, is what Tech is prioritising right now.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/08/2014 10:02

All platforms

It is hard to visually separate thread title from rest of the thread.
Would be good to have the opening post at the top of every page again.

Safari

I'm also getting dropdown boxes on all posts from the bookmark request

AND, much worse, Safari just freezes, for ages, so I can't even go & look at something else. It's taking a couple of minutes before I can do anything with it

& please get rid of that awful flashing German IVF banner (as well as the Peugeot one) - they're much too close to the text to be allowed to flash. Floating is bad enough, flashing is 10x worse

I've turned the blue shortcuts bar at the bottom off. But it still flashes up everytime a page loads up, for about 3 seconds (depends on how long it takes for the page to load), then disappears. So it's not really turned off IYKWIM. Also, without th shortcuts bar at the bottom, how do I access TIO and TIW? I still want to use those functions, but without a great, big, blue bar taking up a chunk of my screen.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 22/08/2014 10:07

Two more glitches -
Tapping the threads I'm on button in the bottom toolbar takes me to a random thread the first time. Second tap takes me to TIO.
Second glitch - using the ellipses doesn't work as in it doesn't take me anywhere but instead causes safari to crash completely. This has happened every time.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/08/2014 10:07

MMHQ Would it be worth stickying this post to the top of Active?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 10:09

The multiple dropdown menus, the slow loading, and the bad power use issues are all related, we think. This is what Tech is doing right now.

On ads:

we're testing this ad position for a bit, and then we will probably test it in a different position. There are always going to be ads - there really isn't a way around that - but obviously we don't want to deliberately piss anyone off. So that bit is still a work in progress and may well change.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 22/08/2014 10:09

The bottom blue bar doesn't really need the picture-hints-for-non-readers, does it? Wink

If you got rid of those & left the words the bar would be 2/3 smaller
