MNHQ Racism policy

ThePigOfHappiness · 31/12/2013 15:17

Hi,
I was just wondering if you could let us know when the racism policy has been amended? I'm sure following today's discussions on NI that it needs to be looked at.
It's clearly breaking the equality act to discriminate based on nationality as it is racist, yet MNHQ don't acknowledge this?

I don't know. I just can't understand how HQ can't see it clearly, easily and why it takes all this fucking debate and all these fucking hundreds of posts to say

RACISM OF ANY KIND AGAINST ANYONE OF ANY RACE, CREED, RELIGION, COLOUR, ETHNICITY IS WRONG AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED HERE

wigglesrock · 31/12/2013 21:06

I'm 39 and did leave home to study & work for a bit in my early 20s - I had people move away from me on the Tube - you know incase I had a bomb. I was also called various hate terms in a workplace but in a friendly way Hmm . MN & it's oopsie type response makes posters feel like shite but let's call a meeting when everyone has the time.

JulieJingleBellsMumsnet · 31/12/2013 21:11

Evening.

We're in no way avoiding this thread but we are asking that you give us a little time to look into things. We're listening to what you're saying and we're constantly looking into how we can improve things from our side but this isn't something that can be done in an hour or an evening as we'd rather take the time to make sure things are done properly.

We'll get back to you as soon as we can.

MNHQ.

isnirelandanation · 31/12/2013 21:11

I remember being very strenuously searched and having a female security guard shove her fingers just about right in my fanny on a plane journey from London about 20 years ago.

And this thread takes me right back there.

isnirelandanation · 31/12/2013 21:13

Julie. With all due respect. You wouldn't say that and be so wishy washy in your response if the posters who are complaining were "BAME" - black asian or minority ethnic. Would you? If the thread had told most black people to grow up or most chinese people to grow up or most would you say that? would you say hang on we can't decide we need a meeting when it suits us?

It is New Years Eve and we're operating with skeleton staff. We would ask people to be patient with us in any situation that needed us to do this in order to give us the time to look at things properly.

1sassylassy · 31/12/2013 21:16

If MNHQ are having a review of their Racism policy then I would ask if they would look again at the way they approach posts regarding Gypsies and Travellers, whilst openly racist posts are deleted ,many that imply racism are allowed to stay,I didnt read the thread that this thread refers to but it seems to be a similar situation.

ItsIgginningToLookALotLikeXmas · 31/12/2013 21:21

See I think it didn't need an hour to do it properly, for a start an organisation should as a matter if course know a bit about protected characteristics - not every employee perhaps, but overall. And not just think race = BME. And when a group of users of the site point out that they feel under attack due to their nationality, and further point out that nationality "counts" alongside race, then action should be taken at that point.
So while you may think taking time to consider your response is a good thing, to me (and others?) it seems further evidence that we are not being believed.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 31/12/2013 21:22

I think its fair enough to wait. Rome wasn't built in a day.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 31/12/2013 21:25

Im not understanding what is being condsidered by MNHQ. Are they taking time to form an apology or form a justification or what? What is being considered?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 31/12/2013 21:26

I think that the fact its Northern Ireland muddies the waters. It makes people nervous.

Even people who mean no harm (in RL IME) can get it drastically wrong.

What's done is done, and there's no point breathing down their necks now. It won't get us anywhere. Its a shame that we are even discussing this, but it has to be done properly.

HappTeeNewYear · 31/12/2013 21:27

I'm not understanding what's being considered either.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 31/12/2013 21:27

An apology I hope. At least.

And some kind of reassurance that threads about NI in future won't just be shut down and have the reasoning given as "bunfight."

isnirelandanation · 31/12/2013 21:28

I'm just not getting it Julie I'm sorry I must be thick.

isnirelandanation · 31/12/2013 21:29

Massive x-posts.

wigglesrock · 31/12/2013 21:36

All smacks of arse covery. I feel one of my mothers type of apologies coming on "I am sorry, if you feel that ............."

You know where somehow all the onus is shifted back to you.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 31/12/2013 21:38

Glad im not the only one. I thought it was something i had missed on the original thread but it seems not.

worldcitizen · 31/12/2013 21:39

isni I am so sorry. I hope you feel here that you are not alone. Lots of people are posting. Also very sensibly and everyone here is also backing your point!!! And your feelings and what you and others are trying to say and express here.

'Isni' to you and everyone else here. Great how yu all are standing up and speaking the obvious and don't let your mind being clouded.

Actually gives me so much hope for 2014. That people do come together and speak up against injustice.

wiggles this made me cry

and isni this

neunundneunzigluftballons · 31/12/2013 21:48

I too was thinking of the traveller threads where blatant racism is allowed but is hidden behind someone saying it was their experience. As if someone would start a thread local settled people made a mess in my local park I felt intimidated and now I hate settled people but saying that is your experience of travellers was perfectly acceptable and stayed put.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 31/12/2013 21:50

Agreed neun those traveller bashing threads are vile.

MrsWedgeAntilles · 31/12/2013 21:58

Fair enough, its NYE, it might take them a while to change tact on this, we are asking them to change policy.
However, MNHQ, if you're going to take your time looking into this, look into all of it. I didn't the original thread and I'm only on this because I've seen this happening too many time on here.
I know as soon as a thread comes up about Scottish independence or mentions travellers in the title that there's going to be pages of ignorant bile and this happens pretty much every time because the moderators tolerate it.
I can't comment on the NI thread because, as I said I haven't read it, but it sounds like something similar happened there too.

HoneyDragon · 31/12/2013 21:58

I think based on this response we need to wait on MNHQ - they do have protocol to follow, and hopefully this protocol may change.

I am pleased with the deletion message now though, that puts the onus of deletion thoroughly on the op.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 31/12/2013 22:01

What was the deletion message? I hadnt posted on the thread so i didnt see it.

HappTeeNewYear · 31/12/2013 22:08

I didn't see it either as I hid the thread.

Can anyone link or share?
