MNHQ Racism policy

ThePigOfHappiness · 31/12/2013 15:17

Hi,
I was just wondering if you could let us know when the racism policy has been amended? I'm sure following today's discussions on NI that it needs to be looked at.
It's clearly breaking the equality act to discriminate based on nationality as it is racist, yet MNHQ don't acknowledge this?

Fair enough.

Should say more. But I usually think that.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 31/12/2013 22:13

The first post from MNHQ on that thread said it was being deleted for turning into a bunfight.

So it could have been worse.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 31/12/2013 22:17

Thanks wanna.

worldcitizen · 31/12/2013 22:22

Thanks wanna

wannabedomesticgoddess · 31/12/2013 22:56

I am confused too.

worldcitizen · 31/12/2013 22:59

It can't be a joke though??? That would top everything Confused

wannabedomesticgoddess · 31/12/2013 23:03

People are starting loads of threads with goady titles and then saying Happy new year in the OP.

I think she's talking about them.

HappTeeNewYear · 31/12/2013 23:03

People are playing MN BINGO and are posting deliberately provacative threads, i.e. I parked in a P&C space to spare my shoes.

SootikinAndSweep · 31/12/2013 23:20

What's the stuff about abortion on the feminism boards?

wigglesrock · 31/12/2013 23:24

Oh ages ago, there was a discussion 're the abortion law in NI and there was a comment made along the lines of "what do you expect from a Catholic country", etc. If you don't know the political situation in a country then have the good grace to ask, not jump on a bandwagon.

worldcitizen · 31/12/2013 23:31

If you don't know the political situation in a country then have the good grace to ask, not jump on a bandwagon.

^^^Exactly, but so many people seem to think they are experts on anything and every own thought is immediately perceived to be fact which needs to blurted out to the world... it's terrible.

Sometimes, I think gone are the times where people would double and triple check before blurting stupid ingnorant stuff out, because of fear of embarrassment. Seemed to be a good social door keeper Grin

SootikinAndSweep · 01/01/2014 08:45

Ah, thanks. Wondered if the law had been changed without my noticing, But nope. Angry

SootikinAndSweep · 01/01/2014 08:46

world, that's indicative of talk boards in general, isn't it? Anonymity means people are braver when it comes to making berks of themselves.

worldcitizen · 01/01/2014 10:54

Yes sootikan, you're right Smile

TheRaniOfYawn · 01/01/2014 12:54

I am feeling very let down by England today not only by MNHQ but also by all the bloody supermarkets who failed to stock potato bread so that I could have a proper hung over fry up.

CatherineMumsnet · 01/01/2014 23:01

Hi all, thank you for your comments and input. This is something that's very important to us. We've been quiet as we need to discuss it as a team when everyone is back in the office.

We will keep you updated and please do continue to post your thoughts and opinions.

wigglesrock · 02/01/2014 07:22

ahh well Smile , whenever you're ready Hmm

Pan · 02/01/2014 09:12

I'm going to be assuming that we are not looking at updating a non-existent 'anti-racism policy' but rather looking at how TGs are operated from a dignity POV to be more inclusive of GB/Irish matters, nationalities, ageism(which is fairly rampant round here), Roma and other travelers groups, and all else that is more familiarly known re minorities.
With the Equalities Act 2010 as a source rather than the start and end.

ThePigOfHappiness · 02/01/2014 09:56

I can't understand this. Yesterday a post was deleted for being disablist for talking about glasses. Yes they were nasty but MNHQ response was on the ball and told op on her taat that it was deleted because people were offended. Errrr hello??

OP posts:
wigglesrock · 02/01/2014 10:19

I noticed that too pigofhappiness.

ItsIgginningToLookALotLikeXmas · 02/01/2014 11:47

I think hq believe that taking time, having a full review when everyone is back from their hols will show that they are taking these complaints/comments seriously.

I think it has the opposite effect.

Pan · 02/01/2014 12:04

It doesn't have the opposite effect on me at all. There's all sorts of issues around the operation of 'dignity' in MN posts and the NI issues (that the vast majority of posters have little idea) is but one of them. So taking time and consulting (which is what HQ are doing here now) seems a good point.

ItsIgginningToLookALotLikeXmas · 02/01/2014 13:31

I think you are looking at a very long-term shift though Pan. I'm looking at a change from having to have a debate with HQ about whether being Irish counts as a race - pretty entry level stuff.

Pan · 02/01/2014 14:05

Agree entry level stuff but apparently missed in the past few days remarkably, and from time to time previously.
There may have been an 'expertise' gap at HQ about the evolving world of equalities (and the interpretation of the Act is developing/evolving - there is stuff moving on about religions, def of sex/gender, learning disabilites and large institutions in RL are being financially held accountable as we speak through a lack of knowledge on these issues), and HQ need, I think, to take timely advice on these things.
So it need not be a long term thing at all. Just much more comprehensive than it has been in the recent past.
