In what circumstances would this happen MNHQ?

A poster's entire history being deleted 'at poster's request'.

I realise it has happened when there have been serious issues regarding someone's personal privacy, being outed or somehow being made to feel vulnerable/threatened in RL as a result of what they posted on MN, but why else?

I thought your policy was not to delete posts (providing they fell were within the TALK guidelines) unless they seriously compromised someone's privacy or safety, or there was potentially a legal issue.

I want that now,Beer.

Ghoulsualsuspect.

But I would be stuck with that name for all eternity.

beer - not if you're worried you've outed yourself, though, or said something you shouldn't if you're identifiable.

Eg., when there were MRAs all over the boards threatening people, it suddenly mattered if you got into a huge row with someone on the internet, because they might turn out not to be an ordinary poster but someone who'd stalk you round the boards trying to stir up trouble.

In that situation, better it all goes than you fret someone would keep trying to put together your posts until they realized who you were in RL.

FavoriteThings · 04/10/2013 23:47

So once we have "given" them, we have "given" them. Much like a present. We cant get it back again very easily, if at all. So we do indeed have to be very careful.

I'm going to ask tech.

Chubfuddler · 04/10/2013 23:52

When I had a different name a weirdo managed to do a massive online stalk and pm d me my real name, my parents names and my address. Obviously I freaked. I asked hq to delete all my posts, which they were very reluctant to do but said that ultimately if I insisted they would.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 04/10/2013 23:52

Arre you ok going in alone?

I'm vodkaed up, it's now or never.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/10/2013 23:59

Crikey, chub, that's terrifying. How horrible.

beer - oh, god, I don't mean me. I'm identifiable and don't care. I don't foresee starting to care, but I do feel secure knowing that if something scary happened, MNHQ can and will delete when there's a good reason.

There would be absolutely no point in namechanging if your posts are still up there for some weirdo stalker to find, would there?

You could have been posting for years thinking 'ah, it's fine, I don't mind posting a few details about my real life, after all, I'd be happy to know any MNer in RL'. And then you think 'shit, this is someone on the warpath who might now be able to work out who my kids are'.

Anyway, as I understand it, that's what gets people worried.

Chubfuddler · 05/10/2013 00:02

TBH I think they were trying to prove a point rather than be v weird. They got told off.

My ultimate thought?
50 year down the line MN will still have all the info on us. Who knows who will run the country then. And who will own MN. The North Koreans anyone???

FavoriteThings · 05/10/2013 00:13

MNHQ can sell all of us on to the highest bidder. Nothing to stop them, is there. Then who will own our details? Tescos, Daily Mail, the Government?

MonstersBalls · 05/10/2013 00:27

Which be worse though?
North Korea or the Daily Mail?

CakeBotherer · 05/10/2013 00:42

And yet it hasn't stopped you from posting has it Favorite?

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 05/10/2013 00:59

MNHQ deleted a few of my posts under an old name because I had accidentally outed myself.

Tee2072 · 05/10/2013 07:27

In 50 years it may not matter because we may be such an open society we'll all be using our own names anyway.

Also, in 50 years I'll be 94.

DameFellatioNelson · 05/10/2013 07:40

That is so unfair! I once talked out my arse but MNHQ wouldn't delete it and actually laughed when I asked them

Only once Beer? Grin

Wouldn't it be great if you could do that though. No need to look a atwat ever. Not even after several gins. What bliss.

CakeBotherer. No it hasnt. But I name change which would help in worst case scenario I should think. Not absolutely sure on that. And I am a bit careful what I post, but probably not as careful as some. I certainly dont do Facebook. Emails, but again I am careful. Tricky isnt it? We never know what is round the corner.

ModeratelyObvious · 05/10/2013 08:39

Quoting your posts in publications is different to selling on names and addresses to Tesco, the latter is subject to the usual marketing opt out.

Of course, the company may be sold.

Tee2072 · 05/10/2013 08:49

I would imagine that we can't even imagine what the internet will be like in 50 years.

Imagine plucking someone out of 1963 and putting them in front of a computer today.

FavoriteThings · 05/10/2013 08:52

Quite Tee.

Marketing. Please tell us more about "usual Marketing opt out" if you dont mind.

Tee2072 · 05/10/2013 09:02

Well, MNHQ don't ever sell our information, so there is no need for a marketing opt out option. Or marketing opt in.

The most they do is give your details to a third party for a product test and, so far as I know and HQ have said, that third party has to also agree to not sell on our information.

So I am not sure what you are exactly worried about.
