'Appy days - Android, iPhone and iPad apps released

Following on from the news of the release of our shiny new Android app, we are vair pleased to announce the release of the new and improved iPhone and iPad app.

All of our Talk apps are free to download and you can find lots more info on all things mobile here including an easy to scan and download QR code to get the mobile version on your phone.

Please do take a look and come back and tell us what you think.

I'm writing this from the mobile site because every time I click on this thread in active convos it crashes - other threads work though so I'm not sure what its got against this one!

iPad, first.

Scrolled through a few threads. Didn't seem to have a box at the end for adding a post. Came to this thread, and I realised that when I scrolled down it wasn't getting to the end of the thread, so that was why the add post boxes weren't coming up. When I let it try to download more posts it crashes.

Otherwise, very clear. Am missing the thread started by and last post by name checks, but I can wait for those . They are going to come, aren't they?!

Advanced search is a vast improvement. There is a scrolling problem there too though, as the list gets as far as Mumsnet Local - Chelmsford (or thereabouts) and won't go further.

Android.

I scanned the barcode. This may be me rather than the app, so could you just tell me, is it meant to be a separate App like on the iPad, or does it just go to the browser? I haven't got a separate MN app, btw, after scanning the barcode. (Mind you, my phone's pretty full as I can't get rid of stupid things like stock market. Anyone able to help on that?) I may have had a msg telling me there was not enough space or something, but dh and SIL wanted something so I was interrupted...

I've only had a quick look at the updated iphone app (I used the old one a lot). On first glance, I like the look of it, however, i closes down every time I open this thread! Others have been fine though.

The banners at the top take too much space - about a quarter of the screen. Between that and the just text giving ad, there's probably only about 60% - 70% of the screen that scrolls. So if I choose active from the menu at the bottom, I have a big purple 'active' banner, then below it a blue banner saying 'talk>active'. It's wastes a lot of space to tell me I'm in active convos.

I really like that you can see more of the actual thread title - no more 'AIBU to ask my MIL...' then reading 10 pages to figure it out! Search looks better (but I haven't tried it yet) and like that you can access PM's not that I ever get any

Not convinced about the smileys - too different looking from the website and I don't know what some of them are for. Green heart????

Ok, I'm on the iPhone. It has crashed me out 4 times when I scrolled to the bottom of this thread. Also - that advert is in a very annoying place, mainly because the viewing window for the thread text is just too small.

Don't know if this will post - I am finding that when a thread refreshes to bring on later replies the whole thread crashes. That's with this thread at the moment (haven't tried any others)

Like the look of it but it keeps crashing when I'm in the middle of something which is annoying when you are in the middle of a thread!

I have an ancient iPhone so doubt it'll work, will stick to old one for now. Use it all the time fairly frequently so don't want to either install it and it doesn't work and I lose this version, or install it and it's shite.

I can't 'flip' a thread, or scroll to quickly, or read a long thread without it crashing.
What I can see of it looks prettier though...

Okay, praise and criticism like a sandwich, here goes ...

I like the iPad layout a lot. TBH I tended to read through Safari on my iPad, so don't know how different it is, but I do like it.

This thread crashes the app on both elderly iPhone (3GS) and nearly-new iPad.

The emoticons are insane. Having emoticons which are totally different in an app as opposed to a browser is bizarre. Having ones which don't exist in a browser bizarrerer still. I can't see what most of the faces are supposed to be on the iPhone, and while I may not have a retina display on that I DO have perfect eyesight. Ner.

And there is no 'hmm' emoticon. That is my favourite emoticon ever, I often bemoan its absence at work (cos I feel that way a LOT at work).

When not crashing, both apps are nice and responsive. iPhone one always has been - I often resort to MNing when the signal is too weak to do anything else.

Wish I'd read this thread before upgrading, I got excited. It's not useable at all on my iPad or my iPhone
But actually it's mainly this thread... Is it the number of emoticons on this thread that is causing the problem.
Flicking between web page and app, and other threads that are less busy are working?

My upgraded app is now totally useless, won't do a thing without crashing and closing. I remember this happened when the last upgrade was released for the iPhone app.

Tis odd as I was one of the 'testers' for the upgraded iPhone app so had it on my phone before and it was fine though sounds like our pleas for book marking and colour coded posts were ignored
