Deletions - These are ludicrous

Ok, that's enough now MNHQ

Stop it with the mad deleting.

OP posts:
RubberDuck · 30/05/2012 17:20

Back in them days I don't think there was a report button on every post? So if you were incensed you actually had to use the contact us button and write out a post explaining the problem?

That certainly filtered out a lot of the spurious complaints cos you had to put effort into it.

DogEared · 30/05/2012 17:22

The inconsistency is annoying. There's a thread today with loads of posters shouting troll, but those posts aren't being deleted.

bunnybabylon · 30/05/2012 17:22

back in the old day there wasn't aibu and people were generally alot nicer to each other or at least less abusive

RubberDuck · 30/05/2012 17:23

bunny - did you read the thread bibbity posted? Grin

stoatie · 30/05/2012 17:23

snort at bibbity "zombie threading"

I was twitching and thinking "here is another goader searching for zombie threads" then switched to end and saw why Blush

Very good demo of point re deletions though

MmeLindor. · 30/05/2012 17:25

Ah, that is a good thread, Bibbity.

Quick, before someone from MNHQ notices, someone report a post as being offensive and see if it gets deleted.

usualsuspect · 30/05/2012 17:26

Oh it's definitely changed , more people must be reporting and running to MN telling tales , who they are though I have no idea.

Hullygully · 30/05/2012 17:26

heh heh

OP posts:
KatieScarlett2833 · 30/05/2012 17:26

Thank gawd bibs , was about to get all humphety and tell the OP how my blind mother managed to bring me, my cousin and half the street up... Blush

RubberDuck · 30/05/2012 17:26

How about a compromise. Offending posts are deleted with the message "Post removed by MNHQ for being a twat" Grin

Maryz · 30/05/2012 17:28

This reply has been deleted

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

GobblersKnob · 30/05/2012 17:28

I was like this -> Shock at the blind mother thread.

Was actually quite disapointed when I saw how old it was.

AbsofAwesomeness · 30/05/2012 17:29

I like my and rubberduck's suggestion. Only libellous and really hideous stuff gets deleted

mathanxiety · 30/05/2012 17:30

I don't understand how deleting a whole thread is a better solution than deleting individual posts no matter how many on the grounds that deleting multiple posts makes a thread unintelligible. Why not leave it to MNers to figure out what is intelligible or not, or take it in another direction...

MmeLindor. · 30/05/2012 17:31

Anyone else finding this thread keeps crashing their pc?

Perhaps that is MNHQs plan. Let the thread get so long that folk get fed up posting on it.

PeanutButterCupCake · 30/05/2012 17:33

That thread is hilarious

"you're a twat" Grin

usualsuspect · 30/05/2012 17:33

My PC is not liking this thread at all , it's really struggling to load it and the fan sounds like an helicopter.

RubberDuck · 30/05/2012 17:39

As it is, atm, you have no way of telling if someone has a history of twatishness or is just having a minor blip. Prior posting history should stand, or if removed a clearer message about the reason behind it.

If someone posts something hurtful, then being able to do a quick search and realise that they mindlessly shit-stir across the whole board, then it's easier to calm down and dismiss the insult and just get on with it. (Or is it just me that has to heavily rely on search because my memory of poster names is shot?)

It used to be that if you saw "Message Deleted" then they'd done something really heinous. Whereas the burning cross comment mentioned early on in this thread was a witty clever put down that deserved to stand.

RubberDuck · 30/05/2012 17:41

sorry, that last sentence should read "was a witty clever put down under extreme provocation that deserved to stand in the context of the thread." - reread back and I didn't think I made my argument very clear.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 30/05/2012 17:41

My brain went into meltdown a few pages ago but as a prolific lurker I agree and wanna be on the list!!

I'm now on west coast America so online when the actual trolls are being offensive and nasty all over the place - those are the only posts I've ever reported and mainly because it takes days and days for them to be deleted.

Ridick

strawberrypenguin · 30/05/2012 17:48

Just wanted to say I agree. I see far more deletions now than even a couple of years ago when I started lurking. In my MNing time I have only reported one post and that was because it was horribly homophobic. General name calling I couldn't give a toss about. I think deletions have got a bit out of hand lately.

UphillBothWays · 30/05/2012 17:55

Here's a suggestion from a lurker.

Obviously we don't want so called personal attacks/troll accusations on boards like bereavement etc. But, tbh, there is a time and a place for calling someone out for being a knob - haven't we all called DH/good friends that in bad arguments and then made up again?

Could we have a board called "fighty corner" or "bosom hoiking" or somesuch where troll accusations, "personal"ish attacks are fair game (as long as not racist, sexist, disablist, outing the person IRL).

If things get angsty on the wrong forum, the thread gets moved to fighty corner pronto and MNHQ sends them a message saying, if you want genuine advice please think about how you can rephrase and post again.

It could be set not to show up in active convos so as not to feed trolls.

MmeLindor. · 30/05/2012 18:02

I see what you mean, Uphill, but that is pretty much what AIBU has developed into in recent years.

I don't think we should be encouraging it, tbh. I think it is ok to expect posters to be civil to each other, and to refrain from personal attacks.

Blatherskite · 30/05/2012 18:06

Grin at the first post on that thread after the Op being "You're a twat"

That'd be a sure fire "post has been deleted for breaking our talk guidelines" post these days but then, well it was true so it stood. Self moderation is the reason many of us love MN. These days it's all getting a bit 1984.

Blatherskite · 30/05/2012 18:09

posts 14, 15 and 16 are

"First post? REally? Bugger!"
