I only read page 1 of the original thread before it was deleted but it didn't seem, at the outset, to be a begging thread. I have no idea how it developed (obviously badly) but it's all so sad. I haven't had much direct contact with the OP but she has struck me as someone who takes constructive advice, works to improve her lot and then passes on the advice she's had (I've definitely seen it happen wrt homelessness).
The OP clearly uses MN as a source of emotional support and advice regularly and I hope that this won't hang over her forever and ruin it. In her position I like to think I wouldn't have posted bank details as I think I'd have had the foresight to see this kind of fallout but, she's young, she's had a really hard time and I don't begrudge her getting a bit of extra cash. There are plenty of people on here who spend ridiculous amounts on utterly frivolous things, the OP is certainly a better cause than a designer handbag.
The people who gave have made a lovely, generous gesture and if they get a warm glow from that, who are we to judge? I wouldn't give money over the internet but that's my choice.
The people who should feel ashamed are those who piled onto the thread saying 'I'll give £10' or '£20' and then changed their minds. I bet there were an awful lot of them and this is what gives the impression that the OP made a killing. When you organise collections for people's birthdays there's always loads of people who promise money and then repeatedly forget their wallet when it's time to hand it over. The OP is getting blasted for receiving thousands but I believe her that it wasn't anything like that amount.
I hope it'll all get forgotten over the next big thing (HQ -time to introduce a new glitch to the fb button to divert attention?
).
