You are sticking your fingers in your ears and going la la la and pretending not to notice that aibu is just awful?

OP posts:
JaneBirkin · 27/10/2011 08:47

I do think it brings in more men though.

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 08:48

I don't understand why anyone cares. If there is shouting and arguing and unpleasantness, click off. If it is a topic that you think would be interesting for a discussion, start your own thread on said topic in a diffrent section and control the tone yourself.

Why does anyone care what image MN has either? Are you shareholders?!

Peachy · 27/10/2011 08:48

I have decided to go on strike from in about ten minutes time for a week, because I know well the way AIBU will go after a programme on tonight and that means I can't post here without risking being actively targeted as a carer. I know a poster who we thought was banned is back under a new name, someone I am scared of, and MN know and as they are entitled to as they own the site have decided to watch so that means I must head off.

I am also upset at the increasing number of AIBU style posts in Sn now; a horrid one about people with HIV, personality disorders shouldn;t get help yesterday- in AIBU maybe but in SN?

AIBU has taken over the site, it's no point calling it Mumsnet anymore, it's just becoming AIBU.Com. That's fine if people want but it mens I protect my own MH in light of a few thousand predicted threads by fucking off for a while.

I love MN: I love the Christmas Appeal, and when poeple are in crisis and all that. But I need to work out whether that's enough now for the hits my MH definitely takes in exchange for that. I can avoid AIBU but if the people wanting my ds's to be support free now post in Sn I am not sure.

I did raise this with MNHQ, no reply.

Peachy · 27/10/2011 08:52

(BTW not a strike in to get attention / ause a reaction- i;d be posting all over the palce with nastiness if it were. But this time, I am opting out from the educating / moderation bit becuase after a day everyone forgets it but my self esteen has been knocked anohter 63 rungs, which won't help me when I start job seeking next eyar will it?)

So adieu. For a week.

JaneBirkin · 27/10/2011 08:53

Hully, if you genuinely don't care about the tone of the site, why not go and post on Youtube? That's the way we're heading.

I don't understand why you don't care. How bad does it have to get?

Peachy, I thought she was back. I'm horrified to hear I was right.

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 08:56

Jane "the tone of the site" sounds marvellous.

It's the tone of AIBU, not the site.

No, I don't care. Why would I? If I see rudeness or unpleasantness I call on it, same as RL. If it's too mad, I walk away, same as RL too.

I would love life to be rational, pleasant, considered and kind, and for PARD to be the norm, but it ain't gonna happen ever any time soon

JaneBirkin · 27/10/2011 08:59

It used to be a whole lot nicer before AIBU began and thus condoned utter disregard for people's feelings.

Again...why are you here if tone doesn't matter? This place is way better than some sites. It might not stay that way if MNHQ keep on pandering to the greatest number of hits.

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 09:16

I've never been on any other sites..! CBA.

I don't care about the Frothing Berserkers, what I care about is how little funny there is any more.

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 09:16

Or are they connected...?

JaneBirkin · 27/10/2011 09:28

I would think, yes, they are connected.

MrsStephenFry · 27/10/2011 09:40

Everyone complains about non aibu in aibu, but when you say on a thread that its in the wrong topic everyone jumps on you for being a caaaaaaah.

Everyone has a dark side, people like a good rant and to szy what they really think sometimes, and thats what aibu does. It serves a purpose. And most of the threads are nice enough or abit funny, they arent all nasty fightclubs.

Trills · 27/10/2011 10:14

I am a caaaaaah, so that's ok.

IndieSkies · 27/10/2011 11:07

AIBU is the fount of frothing berserkers!
And I think the tone of berserker insinuates the whole site - being brittle and taking things personally is the true enemy of funny.

Blackduck · 27/10/2011 11:46

You know Indie, I had totally forgotten it was a joke originally....but then I remember when chat was intrudocued and how much of a farore that caused!

I am loving the gardening analogies :)

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 27/10/2011 12:16

Its odd that mnhq don't comment. There are lots of threads like this (ok, many of them started by me [hgrin]). Perhaps I need to get out more ...

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 27/10/2011 14:25

I think more along the lines of Hully.

For me, this site works just fine (98% of the time) as it is.

I can see what Maryz is saying (which still seems different, to me, to what Jane & Bibbity are saying).

I do think that anyone being, in any way, rude or offensive in any of the serious topic (SN, Life Limiting, Bereavement, Conception etc) should be given a very clear message from any other poster and either a very harsh warning or complete ban by MN. Stamp any of that out right away.

However, for me and many others, AIBU has a valid place here. It is good to be able to vent a bit, to tell people when they are being bloody ridiculous and to say 'FFS Get a Grip' when you want to Grin I like the straight talking side of it.

I think as a compromise it would be good to have the three boards be equally active - Chat, WWYD & AIBU and I would be happy to join in to get that happening.

Would this compromise work for you Bibbity/Jane/Mary... ?

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 15:02

They've ignored all my damn fine ideas. I have suggested a poo topic and a Frothing Berserkers section. Totally ignored. The fools.

HelenMumsnet · 27/10/2011 15:12

Hello, hello. And apols for the lack of MNHQ presence on this thread lately.

OK, first of all, we are very happy to move AIBU threads that really shouldn't be in AIBU (maybe because the OP is a newbie and doesn't know about our other Topics). Please do report any that you see.

Also, just to be clear, we don't moderate AIBU any differently than any other area of Mumsnet - posting in AIBU is definitely not a licence to be ruder to/less respectful of other posters than you would be if you were posting in another Topic.

If you see posts in AIBU that break our Talk Guidelines, please report them to us and we will delete them if they do - and, if necessary, mail the poster with a warning or even ban her/him completely.

For those who don't already know, Mumsnet is post-moderated - this means no one at MNHQ reads posts before they are posted up (we couldn't possibly keep up!); instead, we rely on you all to flag up posts that break our rules by reporting them to us (using the Report link above the post in question). In other words, Mumsnet's (and AIBU's) tone is largely set by Mumsnetters.

Having said all that, we take your many points on board, and we will have a think about taking a tougher line with AIBU posts that are reported and maybe having a twiddle with the "please respect our Guidelines" note at the top of AIBU threads.

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 15:16

And a poo topic?

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 27/10/2011 15:20

Poo and wee Hully? We can't go cluttering up the topics list any further. Frothing Beserkers are all in AIBU anyway, so that's quite neat.

Thank you Helen, I must say you lot at hq do put up with us me and my whinging in a very friendly and stoical fashion. Please have these Thanks as a token of my appreciation.

And now I must go and start my own thread in aibu, for I truly have an aibu question to ask ...

OP posts:
Hullygully · 27/10/2011 15:21

There's yet another poo one on the go. I've put POO TROLL on it as a helpful alert.

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 15:21

Poo seems to be much more exciting than wee.

HelenMumsnet · 27/10/2011 15:21

@Hullygully

And a poo topic?

Now that is BU, hully...

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 15:22

There's another one right now, Helen.

If you gave them their own topic, they could all get off happily on their poo doings together and leave the rest of us alone.
