Can we have a [star] emoticon, pretty please?

MNHQ have asked me to start a thread here in Site to see how much support there is for a Star.

The original request is here.

Hundreds of Mumsnetters have worked together since the beginning of the year to produce woolly blankets for Rinders, Blondes and a blanket and quilt for Edgar. Our current project is here: 3 blankets for the children of Magic8
Since beginning these projects, we have used [stars] to thank all contributers and supporters. We would really like to be able to give a proper Star to those wonderful people who have given their time, donated, or created in order to provide what comfort we could to those families who have lost their loved ones.

If you would like to support us, please post below.

Many thanks.

Ah, you mean little star badges Blush

I'm still back in the dark ages thinking about a hundred or so pixels on a screen!

Maybe something like this??

caramelwaffle · 26/08/2011 20:42

Nice idea

MumblingRagDoll · 26/08/2011 20:49

Yes! Pidgin but then they'd take the crafty ones so much time to make....but perhaps you could do stuff for people here to buy in the name of charity....lovely. I lve crafted things.

purplepidjin · 26/08/2011 21:10

How about this?

"This" is a blanket made from all the squares leftover from Edgar, Rinders and Blondes's blankets. We couldn't see them go to waste, so we decided to make one and raffle it for charity. KnottyLocks is organising it, and we'll be launching the raffle once everyone's dc's are safely back at school. There's a few of us busily making little teddies from left-over yarn as runner-up prizes. But it's supposed to be a secret!!!

MumblingRagDoll · 26/08/2011 21:35

Its beautiful.....howdo we find out about tickets?

LeBJOF · 26/08/2011 21:36

I love it. I'd buy a ticket for that.

purplepidjin · 26/08/2011 21:40

You have to wait a few weeks until all the details are finalised. We'll be splashing it all over MN, don't worry! It's complicated because a raffle is covered by Gaming laws. We first thought of an auction but that's not fair to people with less spare dosh lying around - a raffle will hopefully raise a couple of hundred quid spread across lots of people...

We decided on a charity that supports children going through bereavement Sad Stupid Pidjie can't remember what the charity is called

UrsulaBuffayHere2Help · 26/08/2011 21:45

I think there's too much navel gazing on MN and the really really important stuff is that quite a few people on here this past year have emptier lives, very sadly, and lots of others have done amazing things for strangers, for wordsonascreen. So what's a star emoticon if it enriches someone's life somewhere? If it makes them feel able to reciprocate or show gratitude or makes them feel that they did something worthwhile?

I vote YES.

MumblingRagDoll · 26/08/2011 22:01

You're right of course Ursula....it's simple thing. I know I tend to get far too into the semantics of things....but then that's what makes MN a special place imo.

MumblingRagDoll · 26/08/2011 22:08

purple How about a "Love Darg*which is what the Scots call it when they all get together to make crafts like toys, blankets and knitted clothing...in fact anythng that's a "gift" type thing...and then these are gven to various charities...often childrens hospitals and the elderly who may not otherwise have a gift.

I know you're all busy...and make tonnes aready...but maybe it's something people could work on slowly? I supose this Christmas might be a bit too close...

purplepidjin · 26/08/2011 22:13

Most of the knitters/crocheters involved have their own charities they work for - I send what I can to www.lisasstars.org.uk and I know someone else has taken time out of doing the Innocent Big Knit to make some squares.

And some of the crafters have taught themselves to knit or crochet simply because they were once helped by the person the blanket is for. That deserves a Star, surely?

purplepidjin · 26/08/2011 22:14

PS I don't think it helps that I''m 400 miles away from Scotland...

MumblingRagDoll · 26/08/2011 22:53

Lol you don't have to BE in Scotand!

I will just have to be happy with buying tickets for the raffle then!

skinnymuffin · 27/08/2011 07:55

Love the blanket raffle, I'd buy a ticket.

Love the MN star appeal idea, I'd buy a badge.

Still love the Star emoticon idea- where's the harm?

Love MN Star

purplepidjin · 27/08/2011 08:30

Yay, looks like I managed to make half the people happy half the time, which by my reckoning is a result Grin

Please may we have our star, MNTowers?

GreatNorksOfFire · 27/08/2011 08:33

pidjin, it's Winston's Wish.

YES YES YES to a Star please.

Sorry for shouting, but it's an important one.

purplepidjin · 27/08/2011 08:40

Thank you Blush

giraffesCantChaChaCha · 27/08/2011 09:32

I came on to say no, no more emoticons! But now I feel guilty seeing the reason why! I do think though words say more. What I hate about some forums is when people reply with just a smilie. Next we will have moving hovers a la NM! What is wrong with writing "Have a cua of tea?" Why do we need a picture? Its like one of those books for children that have pictures in them in place of some words. The faces are useful as they help to convey tone. Sorry if I sound like a grumpy old witch, just my preference.

GreatNorksOfFire · 27/08/2011 11:00

They move hovers on Netmums??!

100years · 29/08/2011 19:07

Please can we have a Star There are loads of stars on here and it would be mice to show it.

purplepidjin · 29/08/2011 19:23
