Can we have a [star] emoticon, pretty please?

MNHQ have asked me to start a thread here in Site to see how much support there is for a Star.

The original request is here.

Hundreds of Mumsnetters have worked together since the beginning of the year to produce woolly blankets for Rinders, Blondes and a blanket and quilt for Edgar. Our current project is here: 3 blankets for the children of Magic8
Since beginning these projects, we have used [stars] to thank all contributers and supporters. We would really like to be able to give a proper Star to those wonderful people who have given their time, donated, or created in order to provide what comfort we could to those families who have lost their loved ones.

If you would like to support us, please post below.

Many thanks.

"The posters who do this work don't need gold stars. They have satisfaction instead"

I agree with Lemon. I made a couple of squares for Edgar's quilt and have never felt I needed a star to show that. I certainly wouldn't want one on my profile or next to my name.

MumblingRagDoll · 25/08/2011 14:03

So it would be an emoticon for saying "Have a star"? Like have a Brew ?

I don't see that it would be a bad thing....it wouldn't be particularly connected to the crafty Mums though....and the stars would not seem to mean anything much special after a while....but if you want em I can't see why not!

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:04

For example, here's how it works on the blanket threads:

Here is my first finished square

I'm going to post them when I've done 4, so should be Monday.

Oooooooo Pink, that looks very snuggly

[BigFatWoollyStar]

Relatively simple. Smile
We aren't looking for anything more complicated than that. Honest.

OP posts:
KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:05

No! We don't want them on profiles or next to names either. Shock

Mouseface · 25/08/2011 14:05

Twinkle twinkle little Star
How I wonder where you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky
Twinkle twinkle little Star
We want you here, not afar.

Please MNQH, can we have a Star and yes, I agree that it should be earnt, not just free to be used as a sarcastic smiley.

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:06

Perhaps I didn't explain it as well as I should have done Confused

MumblingRagDoll · 25/08/2011 14:07

Equally, any other poster on other threads could say

"I have the wine and crisps ready for the Friday night drunk thread and also left my husband as advised by MNrs!"

And someone can say

Yay! Star

QueenofJacksDreams · 25/08/2011 14:08

What knottylocks wants is just a simple emoticon to recognize people who have done wonderful things, a visual thank you well done you're amazing. Just an emoticon you can post, no earning system you wouldn't get them for getting so many posts etc.

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:09

Cheers Queenie. That's spot on. Star

thelittlefriend · 25/08/2011 14:10

(good example knotty!)

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:10

I'm not trying to create a house system or introduce class wars. Honest.

ComradeJing · 25/08/2011 14:11

I think it should be a secret star and I'd actually quite love to see sarcastic stars handed out to the bloody MRA trolls

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:11

(That's the government's job)

NorksAreMessy · 25/08/2011 14:11

emoticons are for posts, not for posters, aren't they.

i think this is a great idea *

DutchOma · 25/08/2011 14:12

Wanna wanna star Star

LeBJOF · 25/08/2011 14:13

I don't have a problem with it as a simple emoticon- as you say, I might have got the wrong end of the stick altogether- but it would have to be free to use in that case, and not 'earned'.

I don't like the move to more emoticons in general though, for reasons that always come up about the nature of MN compared to other forums. So if we do introduce it, can we operate on a one-in, one-out basis and get rid of the bear?

MumblingRagDoll · 25/08/2011 14:14

Well it won't be a "a simple emoticon to recognize people who have done wonderful things"

Will it? It will become just like a cup of tea or a wine..

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:14

I'm up for killing losing the bear.

OP posts:
MumblingRagDoll · 25/08/2011 14:15

I think the reason some people are saying they dont want it is the implication that it's only for a certain group of postes....ie those who do crafts for the bereaved.

Which is a wonderful thiing to do....but the idea that an emoticon is

"a simple emoticon to recognize people who have done wonderful things" is divisive.

LaVitaBellissima · 25/08/2011 14:17

I vote yes for [stars]

QueenofJacksDreams · 25/08/2011 14:18

"Will it? It will become just like a cup of tea or a wine.."

Have a Brew and calm down Grin I apologise couldn't resist.

All the emoticons on MN are used in the proper form they're meant to be (apart from Envy and thats only since we don't have a [boak] emoticon) The Brew and Wine emoticons are used to help people relax and chill out or when someones done something really hard they're told to have a Wine and relax having a star would be a well done, we're proud of what you did and frankly amazed by your general amazingness. Like those of the Wooly Wonders amazing people putting in their own time and money to make a wonderful reminder of a beautiful person and mother for her family to know how loved she was by us all.

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:18

No intention of it being an 'earned' thing at all. It really isn't a competitive thing, just a nice thing to use in response to a kind or thoughful gesture.

OP posts:
MumblingRagDoll · 25/08/2011 14:19

So is it only for knitting?

Blatherskite · 25/08/2011 14:19

I just think words are more powerful than emoticons and saying 'Thank you' much more meaningful than a Star which will be misused and therefore devalued, this is MN afterall - a forum basically powered by sarcasm.

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:20

Lots of things in that post. I do apologise.
