Can we have a [star] emoticon, pretty please?

MNHQ have asked me to start a thread here in Site to see how much support there is for a Star.

The original request is here.

Hundreds of Mumsnetters have worked together since the beginning of the year to produce woolly blankets for Rinders, Blondes and a blanket and quilt for Edgar. Our current project is here: 3 blankets for the children of Magic8
Since beginning these projects, we have used [stars] to thank all contributers and supporters. We would really like to be able to give a proper Star to those wonderful people who have given their time, donated, or created in order to provide what comfort we could to those families who have lost their loved ones.

If you would like to support us, please post below.

Many thanks.

No, not just for knitting Grin

Agreed, it must be available for everyone to use or it will become a bit of a cliquey thing to be given.

ScatterChasse · 25/08/2011 14:24

To be honest, if you're all saying "You're a Star" anyway, I don't see why it would make a huge difference to replace the word with an emoticon.

I think it's a lovely idea.

LeBJOF · 25/08/2011 14:24

Blatherskite- I do appreciate th effect that MN is powered by sarcasm rather than fairy dust though, don't you? Grin

LeBJOF · 25/08/2011 14:25

The fact- excuse typos.

MumblingRagDoll · 25/08/2011 14:27

i think people get a bit protective of MNs "plain" look though dont they?

And stars are rather pretty...I don't mind at all...but people will be saying "Oh it's all Netmums in here.....all those huns and their stars!" as they see posts littered with stars.

Twill be hearts and kisses next! And weird little baby emoticons!

Blatherskite · 25/08/2011 14:27

Oh yes, I wouldn't have it any other way Grin

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:28

Indeed BOF, sarcasm, caffeine, alcohol and a lot of bloody marvellous female hormones.

I can just see, 36 seconds after implemetation when the next troll comes along, someone writing "1/10 have a fucking Star and piss off"

Which would detract from the meaning on the blanket threads.

QueenofJacksDreams · 25/08/2011 14:39

Everyone moaned about the bloody bear at first though, now its barely used and its past its time lets have a star instead and something new to moan about at the same time Grin

nickelbabe · 25/08/2011 14:40

you mean now it's Bearly used?
Wink

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:41

Like your thinking, Queenie Smile

KnottyLocks · 25/08/2011 14:42

Nickel, that's shocking. Get back to your crochet!

NessaRose · 25/08/2011 14:42

I don't think it will be to "clicky" to have a Star that is listed as it can be used for lots of threads.

QueenofJacksDreams · 25/08/2011 14:43

Tssh trust you to prove me wrong nickel and point out my poor poor lack of pun skills at the same time Grin

NessaRose · 25/08/2011 14:44

Thinking about it we could get rid of the Bear.
Nickle Grin

LemonDifficult · 25/08/2011 14:45

C'mon, Brew and Wine are what I have with my friends. A MN no-brainer IMO. A gold star is what I give my son when he flushes the loo.

D'you really need a star to thank people? Or feel appreciated? Aren't we bigger than that?

And the Bear is cool in it's own self-referencing ironic way - i.e we're not infantalising ourselves here.

LeBJOF · 25/08/2011 15:02

Maybe if we amassed a star each day we could have a Wine on a Friday then, Lemon? Grin

Yes, I appreciate the impetus behind all this, but on balance, I think I prefer MN as a low-emoticon site. I think the bear, wine and cups of tea were all mistakes.

nickelbabe · 25/08/2011 15:28

we can forgo the Bear in exchange for the Star

SoupDragon · 25/08/2011 15:29

TBH, I"m not that fussed about having a star emoticon. It's just a picture - words have far more meaning.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 25/08/2011 15:31

yes, please a star, one way or another!

BearGryllsBra · 25/08/2011 15:41

What?! You want to get rid of me .... BearGryllsBra?!

Another vote for a Star from me, I think it's lovely. But then I'm a bit sparkly and glittery and an old hippy anyway.

gapants · 25/08/2011 17:09

yes please for a star!!

purplepidjin · 25/08/2011 17:24

The idea of having a Star emoticon is a pictorial thank you to anyone who has done something nice for another person.

Having a Star next to someone's name because of an arbitrary contribution to a blanket is elitest and unnecessary, imo. We don't want to set some posters above others simply because they have the time/funds to do something. I will freely admit that my level of involvement in the blankets has been because of the amount of "down time" awful phrase but can't think of a better one i get in my job. If I had children or a different job, I wouldn't have been able to put as much time in.

The Star has originated on the blanket threads, but posters in other areas deserve thanks just as much - there are people on employment, bereavement, mental health, SN conception etc providing empathy and support on a daily basis for no reward - they deserve recognition. And I know on SN there have been people leave because they simply can't face churning out the same advice time after time...

Anyone remember the thread where to OP discovered the boyfriend cheating and had the locks changed? She deserved a Star

Not everyone wants recognition for their efforts. I don't - but I damn well appreciate it when I get it!

LeBJOF · 25/08/2011 17:45

I take your point, but a simple typed thank you surely accomplishes the same thing?
